Similar things happened here in Canada recently, where the Conservative party (Federal and Provincial) were projected to win elections easily prior to voting day.

Come election day, the Liberals swamped the oppositions and won convincingly.

Polls were also wrong about the Brexit, prior to voting.

Moral of the story, these polls are crapshoots; they do not take into consideration of the potent "silent majority".
