Protests against Trump in NYC and other cities

I can understand that if people are protesting that the popular vote matters, then protest against the US government to change it but the question of how powerful it can be is not to be taken lightly.

It can be devastating to our system and society for full confrontation of this scale.
This election result was a response by the people of the Midwest and rural areas who felt their voice was lost.

People need to understand that he won legitimately, regardless of the terrible values or things he's said. As he won states last night we looked at it with fear but must come together as a country.
Undermining this decision is undermining our framework of a constitution and democracy. Our President himself wants a safe transfer of power but these sentiments will only add to the fire.

Sorry no. They made it their main goal to undermine our fucking president for 8 fucking years. IT FUCKING WORKED. The first African American Presidents legacy practically erased from existence come January. FUCK THAT. I am so fucking done with turning the other cheek at this bullshit. Fight fire with fire within the limits of law. BUT FUCKING FIGHT.

You should read up on the tea party movement. The right did it, so why can't we?

6 million less democrats voted than the last presidential election I'm hearing. Against what Trump represented? Jesus! This election is embarrassing in so many ways. IMO these demonstrations just continues the embarrassment.

eh, many republicans protested for 8 whole years while obama was president. this was bound to happen.

damn shame at how many morons stayed home though. this was the really important one, the amount of change (a lot of it likely bad) Trump can do on the country is crazy considering he also has the house and senate behind him. and likely some supreme court judges to appoint as well.

yikes. really fucking dumb of many democrats to sit out on this. party failed its voters too by pushing hillary clinton as a viable choice. this was the year when a conventional candidate was just not gonna cut it apparently.

Good. People need to take whatever avenues they can to try and limit the devastation Trump and the GOP government will unleash on this country. And people need to feel and channel this passion ALL year round, and in 2018, and in 2020, not just in the days before and after a presidential election. The guys from Keepin' it 1600 put it great, Remember that feeling. Remember that feeling in the pit of your stomach when Trump was declared the winner. Don't let yourselves forget it.

Exactly, don't forget, keep up the passion.

Unfortunately the number of protesters is nothing compared to the number of people who voted for Trump so this really will mean nothing in the long term.

People have to just accept that America is about to go backwards 10 years because of this. I'm glad there's some more outspoken cries about why alot of blue cities are NOT okay with the results, but it won't change the simple fact that Donald Trump is the POTUS.

Hopefully this is a hard lesson, that voter apathy and simply not voting because both candidates "suck" isn't an excuse and can lead to the results we are seeing right now.

I support protest and seeing this right now makes me happy. I think it's good to show the pain this decision has caused, particularly to our minorities. Donald Trump isn't just a candidate we don't like, he's a threat to national security, minority rights and women.

March on, kids

Protests like these evidence a liberal spirit that otherwise would go unseen. They are crucial.

It is also a show of hands if you will of people that don't support the ideals of Trump and are calling out to not be looked past, to be included at the table when important decisions are to be made.

Even if what you say comes to fruition and they go against the electorate's decision (that would cause chaos btw), Trump still wins, they aren't changing their vote to Hillary, and the Republican house would still put him in.
Not if enough switch to put her at 270.

The EC is the final word when a candidate gets 270.

Unfortunately the number of protesters is nothing compared to the number of people who voted for Trump so this really will mean nothing in the long term.

I noticed people organizing a #notmypresident protest in DC for inauguration day and couldn't help thinking that "militias" would be likely to gun a few folks down.

But the electoral college which has chosen almost every president disregards that. The Federalist founding fathers (except Jefferson and Madison) understood the system.

People doing this are only agitating the situation.

I dunno know man. Nobody is lighting any cars on fire.

I do know about the Tea Party Movement. The issue is the timing of this situation. Emotions are at an all time high and I don't believe escalation is the right answer in my opinion.

Yep, I've all been about the high road but this election has set in the cold reality that it has no actual power in politics. All it ended up doing was playing right into their hands, they got *everything*. Politics is a dirty business, it's time the Dems treat it as such.

Good. Run him and his retrograde family out of the city. The Trump clan deserve to live in a state of constant fear for the rest of their lives.

Yup. I don't see the point.

This is not about changing the election results. This is about making your voice heard. That while he may have won there is still a large portion of this country that does not drink his koolaid and we will stand in the way of every single fucking vile proposal they put forward.

no wonder Right galvanized itself into a YUGE win.

Left is too busy being a bunch of pussies and arguing with itself on the correct way to protest.

More like the left doesn't really feel like voting unless their chakras feel just right or you know, they're really feeling the candidate.

Republicans have figured out that voting is about pragmatism. Time for the dumbass kids to figure that shit out too.

Hopefully Trump doesn't do anything radically stupid now that he's in office, because if he does, there will be violent protests.

Can someone tell me the point of protesting? Trump legitimately won the election did he not?

1. It's an outlet.
2. It energizes the Dem base and politicians who are still in office.
4. It makes other Republican politicians nervous for their careers.

I'll get excited when it lasts more than a couple of days and another shiny object doesn't grab their attention.

I noticed people organizing a #notmypresident protest in DC for inauguration day and couldn't help thinking that "militias" would be likely to gun a few folks down.

Every single Trump rally during his entire campaign had protests outside of the event.

Protesting Trump has been done so many times it's not even newsworthy anymore.

The most honest protest are the ones that start when people feel the need to protest not the ones that are scheduled well in advance.

People think they shouldn't be protesting?

Fuck now is the time to protest. We need to let this country know we are not happy about our direction after this election.

I think the time to protest was a few months ago when Trump became the nominee. Now is too late to do anything about anything. The election is done, the people have voted, he has won. Protesting now might help people feel a bit better, and make them feel like they're making a difference, but the time to actually make a difference has come and gone.

It's a sad and depressing state of affairs.

Trying to understand what people think this will accomplish

The first amendment is fine until someone says something you don't like
