Conan Visits YouTube's VR Lab

Great video. Comedy was so on-point, I can't tell if Conan just had those gags off the top of his head or if it was scripted. I also really thought that green screen presentation of VR is the most effective out-of-headset presentation method for VR I've seen, but still not quite all there when it comes to demonstrating how unique it is. Regardless, GREAT entertainment in this video. :)

Man, I love Conan. Great showcase.

I've been cold on VR for ages but after everything I've seen recently (and demoing an Oculus/Touch the other week), I'm really starting to feel the pull.

"Conan plays Vive games" would be more accurate, but they do have a pro setup. Ditto he should visit online worlds like Rec Room.

A lot of games have a mixed reality mode, so it's pretty much down to people getting a greenscreen and setting up the capture software.

I don't believe Tilt Brush has a mixed reality mode. But I don't remember what they call the tech that gives viewers the augmented reality perspective. But they used it in the very first release trailer for the Vive.

None of the shit they show is actually mixed reality.

Honestly it's a bit depressing that the most interesting demo they had for Conan was Job Simulator. VR developers (especially on PC) need to up their game!

There are incredibly impressive VR games out there, just so happens they chose those ones. Rec Room is great, so is Accounting and Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes.

Conan is still not a gamer, people should remember. Tilt Brush and Job Simulator are literally THE games you want to show mainstream audiences in order to make them instantly get the idea without any complicated control schemes.

I'm one of the biggest VR skeptics here - sill am -, but this is probably the most effective way to showcase VR to people who haven't experienced it.

Great video. All VR should be shown off this way

This is pretty awesome...

One of the many things I miss from the NBC days is the old Conan logo. Much better than the TBS one

Probably a miscommunication joke, though I thought about that too. She was already rating him on things in English depending on if she likes it, and didn't say the English no instead of German. A bit on the edge but I don't know.

._. This is going to be a white knight thread isn't it.

Stop being so offended.

That green screen set-up was top notch. That's a fantastic way to sell VR to the masses.

I love how everyone that tries Job Simulator inevitably scans their face in the photocopier.

I'm kind of surprised some people here are seeing this sort of mixed reality footage for the first time. I sort of assumed that anybody on GAF with the slightest interest in VR would have seen some of this by now. Demonstrations like this have been around since before the Vive launched.

Probably people who clicked on this thread because they were interested in Conan rather than VR. Like me. It's me, I'm the guy who's never seen mixed reality footage before.

It was p cool.

I didn't realize that Conan liked dark humor.

You look terrible...you should be back in the iron lung

Iron lungs were used to keep people with polio alive before they found a vaccine.

This is the best / maybe only way to demo VR in videos. PSVR could do a cheap version of this using the camera, from the perspective in front of the player. It would be better than nothing but would still go a long way.

This type of mixed reality is definitely new to me (i.e. the type that has intelligent occlusion of the live video feed). I want more! GiantBomb, you know what to do!

Yeah, I'm sort of surprised GB hasn't gotten on that train yet. They're already using green screens when they film VRodeo so I don't think they need much else (if anything) to make it work.

Pretty cool to see how fast Conan gets the hang of it. Whenever he's handed a controller he's a total mess.

I imagine Vr could attract a lot of casual players similar to the wii if it wasnt for high price

That's not really surprising.
What I've noticed across the majority of VR-only games with full tracked controllers is that you can put true "non-gamers" into them and they'll rapidly figure out how to play.
All that accumulated complexity of needing 12 buttons and two sticks to look around, or aim, or crouch, and so on and so forth just goes away.
