Select few pokemon will start to appear (from today?) In eggs, starting with Pichu, Togepi and "several others"

Really disappointed that it's only a select few. They say more will appear "over the next few months"

From Serebii:
The first huge update to Pokémon GO has been announced. This confirms that the Johto Pokémon are to come to Pokémon GO from today. Trainers around the world will have the opportunity to add Togepi, Pichu and select Pokémon originally discovered in the Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver video games to their Pokémon GO Pokédex through EEggs at Poké Stops. In addition to that, starting from today to December 29th, a special Pikachu wearing a festive hat will be findable for players. The press release states that more Pokémon will be added as we go through early 2017

A "select few"... I was ready for all of gen 2. And just when we thought Niantic were beginning to understand what the players wanted!

I was expecting a dump of new Mons, so this is disappointing... Have we heard anything about the Apple Watch support? I thought they said that's out this month. I'm waiting on that to get back into playing the game regularly.

Guessing it's gonna be all the Baby Pokemon---ease the 150 players into the concept of New Pokemon with smaller forms of pre-existing ones, and then Togepi of course who most 90s kids probably remember.

Guess I'm going for a walk later then :\

I was expecting more than this, and I don't see how making people work to find new Pokémon is going to help retention. Hopefully they have a lot planned for the next couple of weeks.

Do people still play this?

Like are there still stampedes over Vaporeons and crowds of 200 people in parks and scaring church goers?

I expected all the Johto Pokémon to start appearing from now, because I'm sick of finding the same 10 Pokémon every day on my commute.

Talk about disappointing.

This was their chance to give us a huge exciting update and they blew it. Only a select few and only from eggs. Good lord.

Not sure how they were going to dump a whole generation of Pokemon without completing breaking the balance of candy.

A slow trickle through eggs was probably not the best move in any case.

Sorry, I meant it implied the future ones, not stated, but they're not going to leave it with this so it's moot anyway

I feel like dev on pokemon go is really slow, its taking ages to do just a few things but I can't speak about how easy or hard stuff is to add.

This is a terrible way to do this. Should have just released all of Gen 2 and had them available normally. Nobody's gonna want to sit around catching Zubats and Drowzees again just to get eggs that may hatch half a dozen new Pokémon.

Edit: Shit, I didn't even think about the weather. Niantic is one of the worst.

Ahahaha I saw the trailer thing on twitter and was excited, hey cool new stuff.

Watched the trailer... a select few. have to hatch eggs and hope...

Ahahaha what a debacle.

Dunno about that (never saw anything like that in person even at the game's height of popularity), but I still see a good 5 to 10 people playing every time I walk down at the bay.

I kinda feel like a drip-feed of new Pokémon makes sense. Start spreading it out over the course of a few months, take a break, and then so for Generation III.

I am disappointed that it's only on eggs for now as I don't hatch my eggs that fast.

Disappointing doesn't even begin to cover this. I got hyped up for johto and finally being able to evolve my scyther. Now I doubt I'll even have this game installed by the time they get around to making any meaningful additions.

Yep. We have over 700 pokemon to eventually update. You can drop 100 at once, Niantic, it won't kill your app. Geez.

This is probably a smart way to roll it out, since Baby Pokemon sort of retcon the 1st generation of Pokemon. So releasing eggs first makes it more interesting to hatch eggs and try to catch them.

That and releasing gen 2 during America's winter would be a bad move if they want to make a come back this summer.

So I can walk for hours in the cold and wet for the chance to hatch waste of everyone's time, useless for anything other than novelty, evolution chain ruining pre-evolutions and abominations like Togepi?

Whoop-de-fucking-doo.

How does new Pokemon have anything to do with balance of candy? Whatever that is.

On topic, can we assume Pikachu has now been replaced in eggs by Pichu and will hatch from 2k eggs? And from the video I'm guessing Togepi comes from 5k eggs.

They've likely only added the baby pokemon. The rest will probably start appearing as normal pokemon from the next update (maybe in about 3 months >_>)

Not so sure about that. It stands to reason that if Togepi can now hatch from an egg, he should be able to evolve to Togetic if you get enough candy. And you'll probably only need to hatch 2 or 3 of them to get enough, if it's a 25 candy evolve.

I'm imagining they are trickling in the Pokemon, so they won't just have a huge spike on day one and it petering out after that. So i'm guessing they will just add them in on a weekly basis or something.

Only from egg hatching? How do you even get the candy to raise them or evolve at a decent rate?

I remember Togepi and baby pokemon being some of the first reveals for the 2nd gen. And Togepi was in the egg that the prof. Gives you in gold/silver. I assume they're playing off that a bit.
