Square Enix's silence about the PC version of Nier Automata

people do realize that it is in square's best interest to not talk/promote the pc version and be vague if it is not going to be ready for day 1 right? they even could have went to sony to promote the game on stage and advertise the demo once they knew the pc version was not going to be ready on time?

everything is speculation!!!

the least likely scenario is Sony going to square and telling them to not talk about the pc version and paying for timed exclusivity on a niche game when they are not struggling to push hardware and already have enough exclusives for first quarter.....

Nier was initially going to ship at the end of 2016, when Sony's new lineup for the Holiday season was relatively weak.

It may not be true for bigger games, but I totally feel it's true for hardcore niches. At Square they want the cake and eat it too, so they pretend the port does not exist.

I like how people are acting like Sony is above making deals that treat PC gaming like a competitor when Andrew House himself admitted they made an entire damn console to stop people from jumping ship to PC.

You look at the strange 'console exclusive' wording at press conferences and the slow rollout of third party games like AC7 and Ni No Kuni being confirmed for PC a year after some 'hype' stage reveal and it's pretty obvious that marketing deals are happening to prop up their own platform and leave out others deliberately.

They literally do this for every timed exclusive indie game like Salt and Sanctuary and Axiom Verge. They are allowed to say it exists and is coming, but that's it. It is an incredibly common practice.

Those examples are very different cases tho. Salt and Sanctuary and Axiom Verge were made through Sony Pub Fund program

In this case here for NieR its prob some kinda shady stuff

and? when they announced the pc version, it was already confirmed to be early 2017. so you are saying before psx, sony went to square for timed exclusivity for a game releasing in the first quarter when they already have gravity rush, horizon, nioh, kingdom hearts, re psvr mode and mlb?

Hahahahah you think they wanted to get Neir 2 to make their holiday lineup seem better. The game barely exists to Sony.

The game was completely neglected by Sony initially in its announcement too. It was announced on the SE E3 stream, not even Sony's main thing. Seems like a massive stretch.

Edit: Also, we've had an interview where they mentioned an XB1 version down the line as a maybe-maybe.

So... been any actual evidence or anything of Sony having anything to do with this yet, like even the slightest thing ? Or are we still in tinfoil hat town?

Maybe, but this is a sequel to Nier, which wasn't exactly a chart burner in its own right. I would be really, really surprised if Automata cracks 500k units. I mean, I'm still kind of surprised that this game even exists period. I don't see what Sony stands to gain from enacting hardline exclusivity deals with fricking Nier Automata.

How many marketing deals have you ever seen detailed to the public, exactly?

It's not at all unreasonable to think there may be some kind of marketing deal going on. It's pretty standard in this industry. And it's not even an inherent condemnation of Sony, assuming you aren't into console war shit.

Also lol @"significant history" when talking about a series with only one single title released, one that didn't really sold very well.

Nier is an offshoot of Drakengard/Drag-on-Dragoon which has 3 installments all Playstation exclusive going back to 2003.

Another key point you're missing is that the overwhelming majority of sales for the original Nier were on PS3 in Japan, where it actually sold decently and managed to spawn 4 soundtrack albums (more than one of which charted on Oricon), several music concerts, etc.

Square needs to say something soon. I wouldn't put it past Sony being anti-competitive in most cases, but I highly doubt Sony cares about Nier this much. Either SE's marketing has been silent for too long or the devs have been struggling to optimize the PC version.

For the people who don't know how this is false or confusing the logo on the screens was console debut while he said exclusive.
Now after more than a year it's announced for pc day and date with ps4.

A lot of people asked on twitter and no one in Sony wanted to clarify if it was exclusive or not.

I just take any statements about exclusivity (aside of first party Sony studios) with a grain of salt nowadays. A lot of so called exclusives end up on pc sooner or later.

Still of course I would like them to be called out for their disingenious messaging by more than just us dedicated gaming forum people.

This is fair I suppose, but considering the logo states 'Console Debut' I would also disagree. You can't say they misled or lied considering the info is contradicting itself. Later on it was confirmed as Console debut and now it is coming to PC.

Not exactly the best example.

Nioh is also an interesting one, considering Sony published in the west I'm intrested in what happens in the future. I don't think it will be coming to PC though.

Sony is garbage at both the messaging and the labels. I don't even know why they bother with them when they half-ass the implementation so much (and that's being nice). It's a good concept but when you can't even get your labels to be consistent for the same game between different regions (like say Yakuza or Nioh recently), then you've fucked up pretty bad.

Still I wouldn't say a console debut is QUOTE "exclusive to the Playstation 4". Because it isn't, the label "console debut" means that it is the first console that gets it not that it in any way is exclusive to that system, also notice the "console" part as it probably means that pc could come day 1 while switch or xb1 has to wait.

Now I'm not saying it will come to xb1 and switch as I don't want to get anyone's hopes up.

Very true. I will say though, I hate to defend Sony in this thread because I will probably get torn apart with the way it's going, but how much do you think they know about what platforms the games will land on?

This trailer came out in 2015, the game was announced for PC Last month. I bet Bandai didn't even know what platforms it was going to publish on in 2015, PS4 was the gurantee. Sony showed it, labelling it as a Console debut which is true because it is only currently coming to PS4. To defend the exclusive comment, naturally Ni No Kuni has only ever been on home consoles, in Bandai's position they no doubt expected it to stay this way (Console Exclusive) but after seeing the appeal of PC they chose to also publish it there.

Trailers aren't common especially when the game is years out. Deals change, and Sony can only ever change 'labels' when they understand where they stand.

Rip me.

Tbh I agree with pretty much everything here in that deals change and that platforms and other things can also change throughout development. Now the thing is, Sony is just so consistantly horrible at labeling things what they are for kind of exclusivity and the mixed messaging on their conferences really doesn't help the case. So it's more a trend than any one thing.

I agree it's messy. Ideally it should be left up to the publisher to announce platforms, but Console manufacturers love shouting above the rooftops when 'Exclusivity' is involved.

I do agree there have been a few games in this situation, but I also believe it's blown out of proportion in this thread. I do believe Sony are usually quite good when it comes to labelling games, but it is what it is.

No, unless I'm forgetting something, that's very plausible. Or at least a variation of it might have transpired. IIRC, the game was announced with the console-exclusive tag (not that it means much IMO, given how poor Sony has become with the labels). It might just have been a case of, they know a PC version is coming, they just don't know if the PC version will be the same day as the PS4 one given that the latter probably is a much bigger priority for them.

But, speculative either way.

I do believe Sony are usually quite good when it comes to labelling games, but it is what it is.

That was true back when it labelled games as "PlayStation exclusive", "console exclusive" or "console debut". They had clear meanings: only available on PS4, available on the PS4 and PC either simultaneously or later, and available on other consoles at a later date. The fact that said labels are no longer used makes it quite clear that there was a change in policy owing to the fact that some of those who own multiple systems (a gaming PC in addition to a PS4, primarily) were willing to wait if there was reason to believe the game in question wasn't a hard exclusive.

You can still pre-order the PC version on the Square-Enix store. So, I highly doubt it has been canceled. They're probably just silent about it because they don't want to steal thunder from the PlayStation 4 release, which is probably the platform they anticipate generating the strongest sales from.

That a publisher of a multiplatform game is concerned about one version stealing attention from another simply doesn't make any sense if there isn't a marketing deal in place (I mean, the entire point of a multiplatform release is to reach a broader audience, so no publisher would limit exposure without financial incentive), especially in this case as margins on digital sales are higher and PC game sales are overwhelming digital, to say nothing of the fact that PC gamers already know it's coming -- they just want to know when.

So now we're playing on words. BernardoOne said "Day and date releases produce more sales while delayed produce less sales."
You said that's wrong. Then explain why it is.

No we are not. Its not a irrefutable fact when the cases hardly cover all bases. You have a trend, not even a wide reaching trend and extrapolate it to everything claiming it to be a fact.

I know what a fact is. And I relayed a fact to you. It's quite simple.

No you don't.

The silence is annoying, but from a business standpoint makes sense for them to maximize sales, and on the game like this they kinda have to do whatever they can if you wanna see more content like this.

All that matters to me is during this silence they're making a GOOD PC port, that I can buy later. Works out for me personally, because there is so much other stuff coming out in Feb-March.

Doesn't really matter to me. Got the Black Box Edition bought and if it's good, I'll double dip for PC version. Doesn't matter how long it takes.

Considering that the PC version was supposed to come on the same date as the PS4 version, it is probably done so we'll see it when the PS4 sales of Nier die down maybe in 3-4 months. Which will give it another boost in terms of coverage in the media. I don't think PC players have anything to worry about.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
if you guys really really really want to play the game, you could you know, buy the ps4 version (or buy the ps4 if you dont have one).

like me, i bought a basic pc so i'm also able play undertale and ys origin (which is coming out on ps4/vita anyway).

You're right, but the first time I play the game I want it to be in 5K. Not downing the consoles, but the AA in this game would drive me insane. I got like some weird AA OCD shit going on with me.

Just sold my PS4 last month because I knew this was also coming out on PC so this is pretty funny. But I wouldn't have time to play it in the near future anyway so this is not a problem as long as it's actually coming out?

I don't mind waiting on the PC version since I'll be deep into Nioh, Horizon, MLB 17, Mass Effect, and Zelda. Sucks for PC-only folks who were looking forward to playing the game soon, though.

Double dippers account for a super small percentage of sales. Source.... myself.

I really hope the main reason for the delay is to work on a premium port for the fans.

Unless you are GTA or a game in which the technical freedom of the PC offers a big bump (and even then, most aren't exactly big hits), double dipping doesn't pay off. Nier isn't a game that's going from 30 to 60 fps, and so the market for technical enthusiasts isn't even there to double dip.

If there's anything I learned from here, it's don't announce your PC version of a game until it's ready to come out.
