Nintendo Switch Previews are coming in

Gamecentral couldn't resist sneaking this little bit in about Zelda despite the embargo:

I don't know what's better. The review thread where we get a bunch of definitive scores for the game or the preview thread where we get a whole buncha teasing that leaves more up to the imagination.

From engadget preview:

"I can't say much about Breath of the Wild yet, but I can confirm that it is very much a Zelda game, albeit one that doesn't look like anything you've seen before. Notably, it also performed a lot better than it did at preview events, where I noticed stuttering and occasional slowdown while it was connected to the dock. I wasn't expecting much from the Switch's graphical capabilities, but there are plenty of moments where Breath of the Wild is just strikingly beautiful."

Yes i read that. The reviewer i know said that while playing zelda, the switch was getting really hot in docked mode and that it didn't perform as well as in handheld mode (he said galaxy note 7 hot but that's a joke obviously).

I told him he might have a faulty fan in his dock (edit : i thought the dock had a fan) that would cause the console to overheat and make the performance drop but he told me he talked to another reviewer with the exact same problem.

He'll probably talk about it in his zelda preview tomorrow.

The dock doesn't have a fan.

Gonna have say the bezels seem huge in photos. Hopefully the screen sucks you in.

I was talking about this yesterday... It completely does suck you in. Someone said "yeah I didn't even notice the bezel" and at that point I realized I hadn't even thought of it during my playtime (at the Chicago event).

I know there are a ton of valid concerns out there, but this is something I feel confident saying is not an issue :)

Isn't the activity log an app that defaults on the home screen? How did you never come across it at least incidentally?

He probably does what I do. Throw everything that's not the settings menu in a folder to never to be seen again

You must hate the iPhone 7 then.

I have a Z5 premium (4K screen)

Not sure why people have taken exception to my comment, I am just saying the switch is not for me at the moment. The lack of software being the big issue at this point, all the other points I raised just add to the decision.
I am the type of person the buys new tech (especially gaming) straight away but I just cannot get excited about the product.

Yeah, the bezel seems to be an aesthetic issue more than anything; during gameplay when it actually matters I doubt it'll be a problem at all.

Jeez dat Zelda spoiler in the pics of the USGamer's preview lol

The console captures raw pictures at the native resolution of each game, right? Did anyone test this?

Anyway the impression i've seen about the console itself are mostly good. Not particularly worried about how brightness fares outdoor, as i'm not gonna play this when i'm out, and i don't care about the missing features at D1 (some of them simply don't interest me at all, others will come when they're ready). Love the look and snappiness of the OS, but really all i need is to play Zelda in its best form, having Fast RMX, Shovel Knight and Bomberman at launch is a nice extra.

I honestly couldn't say as I looked through most of the previews back to back. But they're even more vague than that. Just seems like everyone is digging it.

Thanks. My expectations with the switch are fair, it's my new nintendo machine and the concept is cool. Some nuisances that can happen (joy-con disconnection, lack of features at launch) are expected to me. I am buying it because i want to play zelda and the overall games announced excites me. But the number one thing for me, even more than the switch, is zelda, i want this game to be great so bad and it's a relief to read that people are loving it.

In the linked documents it said captures were only in 720p. we should ask around if this is still true

We pointed out that your comment was ignorant and contradictory on the 720p and the battery life. If you don't want to discuss, don't post ; otherwise just answer.

Jason and Emily are big fans of Nintendo, but they are also honest. I'm sure the core fans aren't bothered by any of this news. but Ninty needs to sell this thing to people outside of that bubble too, doesn't seem like a good start.

Is the Switch audible? Do you feel the air through the vents ?
I haven't heard anything. Also, you likely won't feel any warmth, since any heat is on the system and you're holding the Joy-Cons.

So it even saves your game? I wonder how that would work in a game with save points, could they have a system save file or something?

It save states essentially. I came right back to where I was. It seems to treat it just like normal Sleep Mode.

If you plug the controller into a PC, does it make the device connected sound?

Took a hot second, but it does indeed!

So did they try connecting it to a secured network? Like, to test the pop up browser

There is currently no pop-up browser. Nintendo says it'll be coming in the update. Right now, the Switch can't connect at Starbucks or McDonald's.

Is it comfortable to hold while doing #2?

So I am still not seeing an option for bluetooth headphones. Am I just missing it?

I have not seen an option for Bluetooth connections. So my guess is they aren't supported.

Oh i missed it. Yeah we definitely need some testing about that, it's normal if it captures at 720p when undocked but captures in docked mode need to be at native res.

pretty sure he just wants a 1080p/4K Nintendo console in 2017.

can't say I blame him.

I have no doubt they'd never aim at 4K at all, even if this wasn't a hybrid. Even if they had something to compete with PS4 Pro they'd keep 1080p the maximum for games. It's getting a bit pointless to discuss this 'what if?' though, Nintendo has chosen what they think is best for them. Also his complaint is about the screen. The console itself isn't limited to 720p. No dedicated gaming device was going to have a portable screen that does better.

Sounds rushed then, wonder what the system would have been like if it had released in 2016 like they originally planned to.

I wonder my-self, especially when it comes to the lineup. I think 2017 was inevitable the whole time.

"Why does my video game console only play video games"

I'm more interested in the question "how does person claim to be journalist and get a Switch"

I'm sure those things will be added by the end of the year. Assuming of course the softish launch rumors are true.

The lack of games is more important to people than the lack of secondary features. I'd rather have a flawless OS and updates in the coming months than an OS with flaws but full of features that don't work properly.

No virtual console is disappointing, but I'm hoping they'll let me re-download games I've already downloaded eventually so I'll wait. Really don't care much about the rest.

Yeah this has been discussed extensively the last couple of pages :)

Basically, every gaming OS starts off a little basic. I'm just glad that this OS is off to a great start re: usability, ease of use and speed.

It's a soft launch. See my earlier post.

That's exactly what the Nintendo rep I met said was the idea behind this barebones March launch. By the holiday season Nintendo plans for the Switch to be a full fledged tablet multipurpose device.
They are just focusing on the hardcore Nintendo fans with this launch.

For a device that only plays video games it sure doesn't have great support for that either.

Yeah... I'm of two minds about this one. I agree with Jason in that Switch is not a product for everyone at launch. Diehard fans (like myself) will buy in right away, but otherwise it seems best to wait.

Thankfully in regards to the overall success of the Switch, it seems like that's Nintendo's plan. Just about all of the big features and games that are missing on day one should be around by fall. That's their best shot at big sales too. I just hope they can keep a decent momentum up until then.
