Nintendo Switch Previews are coming in

You don't think Jason is legit simply because he's not impressed with the Switch as you want him to be?

We will risk a shuriken to the head from Nintendo’s ninja lawyers by saying that Zelda is everything you will have hoped for, and more, but we won’t be able to do a proper preview until tomorrow.
Thanks for the sacrifice, it was worth it :)

Legitimately 100x more upset about no Streetpass and Miiverse than I am bout fuckin VC or Netflix.

Like, Streetpass should've been a no brainer for Switch :(

Also the lack of browser continues to utterly baffle me. I wanted to browse GAF on my Switch.

Online connectivity outside Wifi isn't coming until a patch "prior to launch" according to Nintendo. No eShop, no online, no Nintendo Account linking in our current review units.

Bright side: the Wifi with sign-in page issue? (The Switch currently can only sign into open or password-protected wifi because it has no web browser.) Nintendo confirmed the patch will have a fix for that.

"Ability to connect online using hotspots that require authentication, such as at a hotel or café. A web applet will open up so the user can sign-in or accept terms of use."

The most awkward this is the shoulder buttons for me. On the Joy-Cons they're a bit too small for dual fingered use. Index fingers only, unless you're on the Pro controller.

Nope.

It's under User Icon > Add Friends, but it currently doesn't work.

It's pretty quick. Capture button use is snappy as hell for example. Returning from Sleep Mode too.
A twitter follower asked me to ask you if the connectivity issues of the joycon happens more often with one color or another? Is it more prevalent in the Grey ones or the Neon ones?

Took a hot second, but it does indeed!

I thought I'd have to be careful with not cringing myself to death when reading the Zelda review thread, but there's already some pretty embarrassing reactions here to what is nothing more than subjective opinions. This level of fandom really brings out the worst in people.

cmon guys. I'm super excited for the Switch but questioning people's jobs for providing their thoughts is ridiculous.

Jason and Emily are big fans of Nintendo, but they are also honest. I'm sure the core fans aren't bothered by any of this news. but Ninty needs to sell this thing to people outside of that bubble too, doesn't seem like a good start.

So, you're saying it's a gaming device?

Relatively spartan, yeah. Like every other gaming OS at launch ever.

It'd be nice if they were there, sure, but undercooked? It's just standard procedure.

Did the PS4 and Xbox One launch without a browser and video apps? Any way you slice it the console is half baked. The only reason I'm buying now is because of Zelda, shows you how much swing that one game has.

Being a big fan doesn't mean your unfavourable opinions are correct. I personally think the criticisms of no VC and Miiverse/Streetpass aren't big enough to call it undercooked, would like to hear more about why they think this (the sync issues obviously are bad, I hope Nintendo is aware of it and fixes it in the day one update).

Come on, you are making a fool of yourself.

No virtual console is disappointing, but I'm hoping they'll let me re-download games I've already downloaded eventually so I'll wait. Really don't care much about the rest.

Don't get your hopes up.

These features are expected these days. Fortunately nothing essential is missing.

I'm not saying Nintendo should do the whole TV focused thing MS did, but people do more than play videogames on their consoles now.

It's pitifully apparent this thing should have launched in the Fall, but financially it makes more sense to get it out now. It's undercooked. Slice it any way you want.

Sounds like how I use my PS4. As long as I have access to the eShop and play my games, then I am all set.

The other features are a nice addition, but not anything I will lose sleep over when a new console launches. Let me play the new games.

Correct, I couldn't find it.

Darn! I guess them saying it's "possible" doesn't mean it's "included." Hopefully a Day 1 update or soon after. I love the idea of playing docked with my headphones and undocking while not even having to touch or adjust my settings or headset.

StreetPass has always seemed to me like a great idea in search of a good implementation. Its most useful implementation was just an annoying way to gate content.

"How dare people be excited about things they like!"

EDIT: Or are you saying something else? Your post isn't 100% clear.

Wait, did they say switch would have Streepass?

Also, based Arlo was right.

I'm totally ok with being part of a soft launch

Yeah, because the virtual console plays movies...

and it's not like the lineup we have now is full of big games either. It's ok to like the switch. At the end it will have Zelda day 1, but to dismiss legitimate concern about basic features not being there day 1 is unreasonable.

This all feels really rushed and underwhelming.

I've decided to cancel my pre-order and switch my Zelda to the Wii U version.

No kidding. I don't think I've ever once opened up youtube, web browser, netflix, or any other app on my PS4.

I mean, I see why people want these things. It just doesn't bother me at all. What I'm saying is just give me Zelda already.

Honestly, I loved the shit out of Streetpass but hated the implementation. It felt so tedious to jump in and out of like 10 different mini-games every time I met new people. It'd be absolutely goddamn perfect for mobile though.

Better than the Engadget (?) article made me believe

It's probably because Andre shields the sun a bit like how you'll use it like a handheld, while the Engadget preview just let it lie under the hot sunlight. So the GX capture seems more realistic as that's how the majority will use it anyway.

FTFY

720p is a stupid complaint. It's that way for battery life purposes. Same reason your phone drops to 1080p most of the time.

720p isn't a stupid complain, it is a very valid complain. I have a 6" 1080p phone and a 5.7" 720p phone before, difference is night and day. Infact I also have the z5p, even when things are always in 1080p upscaled, still better than a typical 1080p screen in the same size because its pixel density is so high. You literally can not see a single pixel on the screen, where I can even on a 2k screen.

I'm just as excited as you/them. What I don't like is questioning other peoples opinion's validity on the basis that they dislike it or are underwhelmed.

Ah, I thought you were talking about people's reaction to that Zelda tease considering you mentioned the "Zelda review thread."

Yeah this has been discussed extensively the last couple of pages :)

Basically, every gaming OS starts off a little basic. I'm just glad that this OS is off to a great start re: usability, ease of use and speed.

not allowing you to connect to external wifi is hardly a "little'" basic and basically means it's useless for travel at launch.

anyone know when at least the mini browser is due?

Of course they wouldn't implement streetpass on the Switch. It's not like a 3DS that you can literally take anywhere all the time. It's a home console and it's treated as such.

I don't understand how people would expect the Switch to have that kind of feature...

It's like people are crying about stuff I could have told you wouldn't be there.

There's a day one update that the reviewers don't have yet that lets you connect to external wifi.

Wait, people actually like Streetpass and Miiverse?

Nah people are nitpicking for the sake of nitpicking. They should keep to real issues like the left Joycon desync.

It's pitifully apparent this thing should have launched in the Fall, but financially it makes more sense to get it out now. It's undercooked. Slice it any way you want.

I'll bite and repeat an earlier point.

If Nintendo wanted it to, VC would launch with the system.
If Nintendo wanted it to, Netflix/browser would launch with the system.

These are deliberate choices that people may or may not agree with, but they have nothing to do with a 'rushed launch'.

Nintendo want to pad out stuff like VC for the rest of the year instead of front-loading everything, and I personally don't think that's indefensible.

I sincerely doubt these features would have launched with the system whenever it would launch.

It's ready for launch, so there goes your point ;)

People outside the bubble don't give a shit about any of those things on a video game console.

StreetPass has always seemed to me like a great idea in search of a good implementation. Its most useful implementation was just an annoying way to gate content.

Actually if the ecosystem is thriving with console owners, it's really terrific and kind of a neat extra for games. It's pretty worthless in underpopulated areas though, so I get what you mean.

Though, many games kind of combined Streetpass and Spotpass features to fix this. Ultimately though you're pretty right about it. Wish they'd retooled it for Switch.

Jeez the reason why this is turning people off is bc off the Wii U and how the switch is launching doesn't leave a good feeling for people, but we shall see how it is a year from now.

Because consoles do way more than play video games nowadays. Consoles aren't how they were 20 years ago where they just played whatever cart/disc you put in them.

So are you going to be mad when browsing apps, netflix and youtube are added down the line because your console no longer "only plays video games"?

Streetpass is a cool idea, but it destroys battery even in rest mode. It's the right idea to kill it in favor of battery life

Jason Schreier isn't a real journalist now? Simply because he's not as excited about the launch as you and values some of the many missing features?

Try playing an intensive game on your phone. Go on, let me know how that goes.

The unfortunate reality is that a higher resolution screen would kill the battery. Enjoy 45 minutes of Zelda before you have to hug a wall.
