17-minute-long IGN look at Mass Effect Andromeda (Peebee Loyalty Mission SPOILERS)

2017-02-2818_43_13-17txjtr.png

Yeah this was just.. wtf. Why do all the cutscene animations look so weird? I don't understand.

It's good to finally see a Krogan squadmate again. Peebee had to be revived a few times, Krogan was all up in the front line, just tanking shit.

Yeah their whole "Oh the face animations just aren't done/buggy!" excuse from last year is pretty clearly not true. Just expect poor facial animations.

Overall I'm liking the look of things, but damn that dialog was not impressive. Villain was annoying and not in a good way, SAM had instructions for you ever 2 seonds, Peebee interjected too much....

Sigh. Please be great, Andromeda.

You know Bioware fucked up when their gameplay demo makes me hope A) I can avoid recruiting Peebee or B) if I have to recruit her, there is a way she can permanently get killed. If that planet blows up, she totally deserves to be on it for that shit she pulled.

And this is coming from a guy who bothered to keep all the ME2 squadmates alive, including Jacob Taylor, blandest man alive.

So, I haven't seen much of the game up to this point, is that a style choice or a tech limitation, it looks real cartoony.

Style choice. FrostBite can do better.

Yeah, given opening I will airlock her to outer space or at least kick her ass all over that planet for launching escape pod like that.

The default female face is so wrong :\ It's unbelievable that they use it so much in marketing the game..

The game itself looks OK, but somehow underwhelming. Something is just off. And that scanning bullshit seems to take a good part of the gameplay which is awful :\

Shooting seems too similar to prior games, boring. You get cover, point the reticle to static enemy and shoot a lacking of feedback weapon.
When will devs realize that not disabling reticle while in cover makes shooting a simple pointing game?.If you disable it you are forced to leave cover to make your shoots and make everything more tactical and realistic.

Hey new Mass Effect footage today! Let's see if they ever fixed the facial modelling issues of the reveal trailer.

10 seconds later...

It's so weeeeeeird! I don't know why because I truly couldn't care less, but man. I simply cannot get over that face.

Just so I'm 100% clear, that's FemRyder right? If you don't pick her you don't have to look at it ever, correct?

10 minutes in but holy hell this is so boring. Scanning, dialogue, combat, more scanning, some more scanning, combat.

Visually quite amazing though, so I guess there's that.

Can we customize our characters? I want to roll Female Ryder as I did with Shep but I really hope I'm not stuck with... that character design.

  • That is default femRyder, correct
  • If you play as maleRyder you have to look at her during playthrough
  • You can customize both siblings, no matter which you end up playing as

Can we PLEASE stop nitpicking quick shots holy fuck it's like NeoGAF is a constant version of CinemaSins BUT THESE PEOPLE ARE FUCKING SERIOUS.

For fuck sake.

Oh christ...

"Got to get past that obstruction, maybe there is a console buried somewhere nearby!"

I mean will the game just spoil every roadblock before even giving the player a chance to assess the situation? This is supposedly deep into the game right? Loyalty mission, not hour 1 tutorial...

Why would you choose a Loyalty Mission for a pre release demo of the game you havent shown any extended gameplay from?

Jesus what the heck is going on with the marketing for this game?

Yeah, you can.

I'm with the people that are narrowing their eyes at the AI. It's pretty dry, pretty constant, and pretty tutorial-y.

Yes and no? If you pick Ryder brother, his sister still exists and plays a minor role in the story. But presumably if you customize your character, she may be adjusted too.

Anyway I think I may be the only fan who doesn't have a problem with her default face. :) Neither here nor there though since I'll be customizing my characters anyway.

I wish they chose a throwaway side quest instead. Loyalty mission though? Damn.

Will take a quick peak at combat though.

Well that didn't look good :/

Getting rid of direct squad commands really seems to limit your tactical options. Combat just didn't look right to me.

Yup, this annoyed me, too. How many times will the final game need to remind me how the right stick works?

Is this completely unrelated to the main plotline?

So badly want to see this and dont care about specific spoilers to the character, but dont want any wider story spoilers (eg major plotlines, reveals or a final location)

What really stood out to me was the sense of weight in the character movement.

For some reason that's something really important to me ,and I like it here.

It`s like... The more they gameplay they release, the less I want this game. I mean, we have already seen this planet. We already knew that you could shoot and scan things. Isn`t there more to it in this game?

Well if scanning is used in main quest then player will be introduced to it earlier so what new mechanic? And even if it is new mechanic you shouldn't go and tell player what to do exactly before they even get to see environment.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Could be needing to blow up rocks to get at nodes, or needing to use 'observers' to make stuff work, or needing to use the scanning to follow the wiring or whatever.

I think thats the reason they have shown so little.

That or the marketing for this game is terrible and this is going to turn into a Doom type success where all the pre release material was bad but the game was great.

Ok I thought that was pretty awful.

Essentially an amusement park ride with about as much interactivity or agency as you are afforded strapped to a rail-car seat. You can look left or right, but do little else.

-Every obstacle is spoiled by the "voice in your ear". He points out everything you come across such as life-forms and solutions to problems you didn't even have a chance to realize was a problem yet. (Oh there was a door locked in front of me? How was I supposed to know, I just walked in here!)
-The mission almost never just takes a step back and let the player breathe. Combat time! Walking slowly and scanning time! follow the voice's explicit instructions(or don't, you have no choice really!)

Granted this isn't largely any different from prior games, but I suppose it was too much to expect the franchise to mature a bit. If this is a taste of what to expect from the game at large in terms of mission design. No thanks.
