Mass Effect: Andromeda - EA/Origin Access trial coming March 16th - 10 hour trial

Seeing some of the Ryder presets used on random npcs is jarring. Dumped in about 2 hours tonight and am not entire sure how i feel. I do like the combat so there's that but the animations are brutally hard to ignore at times.

There really is a Simpsons gif for everything.

Boy oh boy the dialog...

So we invade a planet... aliens see us.. shoot.. we shoot back and kill them. One of the people on our team actually says "Geeze, what did we ever do to them?" I mean come on bioware, you can do better.

So far.. I am not having that awesome ME moment I did on the first 3 games.

Just off the first planet, don't think I want to play much more. The writing and voice acting is just distractingly bad. The environments are nice but everyone and everything within them just looks so dead and lifeless.

Combat seemed ok I guess. Enemies were a bit bullet spongy on hardcore though.

Or when, in that segment, Ryder says
If things were revered, and they landed on our planet holding weapons, we'd shoot them immediately. PRETTY SURE that wouldn't be how that goes. If a space ship with only 4 aliens lands on earth and they come out holding weapons, you wouldn't just fire away immediately for fucks sake.

I'll post this question in the Steam Link thread later tonight, but:

Does anyone here have experience using a Steam Link for EA Origin games?

I can use the Link already for things like Overwatch, but whether or not I can play ME:A with a Steam Link will influence my purchase decision.

It won't install for me. It starts then say "installation stopped".

Garbage.

Still doest read as available in EA Access app. Guess at midnight?

I asked about it Abit ago in the ME community and got the following helpful response.

Haven't had a chance to test my steam link but will next week when I don't have a time limit.

Finally downloading after reading that I had to go into the "Learn More" and then select the version I had pre-ordered, which lead me to the download link.

Man if I had known this earlier! Oh well, decent connection means I have an hour and a half wait.

I'm counting on you all for your opinions on the game. If after 10 hours this game is still just mediocre I'm just gonna get the Trespasser DLC for DA instead.

Can I just say that HDR looks amazing on this game?

But yes...I agree that the VA and writing is pretty poor. I also like Liam not being able to consistently sound British.

MY GOD PLEASE FIX THE EYES!!!! I'm playing as Sara and when we get planetside, I can see her eyes bulging out of her head like she's recreating that scene from Total Recall

Writing is horrible in some sections. Otherwise, I'm having fun discovering and shooting things.

Played 2 and a half hours or so. Got my ship, got to the planet your told to go to, got my vehicle. Had some fights. Talked to some folks. Scanned lots of stuff. Picked up resources. Found a shop and my eyes near melted at the UI. All in all it feels so much like DA I but with less polish. The faces Sara makes is killing me. The faces everyone makes are killing me. 2 and a half hours in and if I never hear Pathfinder again it would be too soon. It hasn't grabbed me. That's okay. Not every game can.

Hard feels a bit, well, hard, so far. Not really in a particular fun way, can't really use charge unless you wanna get rekt real quick except on the last enemy in a fight usually. Might just be because it's early on though.

Edit: Tried normal, feels a bit too easy. Think I'm going to play normal until I get full squad and inventory stuff opens, then switch to hard, don't care about achievements.

Holy cow the environments in 4k!
I was not expecting anything but it's nice to have a serious sci-fi game from bioware. the explorer aspect I totally can see as a great setup. And it's nice to see a speech wheel system done much better than the fallout 4 imitation.

I'm about 5hrs in and enjoying it. It feels like mass effect, with all the highs and lows and occasional jank. It definitely looks great, especially when planetside. Big, open areas. Side quests that I feel like doing. Decent chatter between sqaudmates, for the most part. I'm definitely seeing myself sink many, many hours into this.

Well, I've only had an hour or so on the X1, and my feelings are...mixed. They really did mess up on the facial modeling and animation. It's subpar compared to other efforts this generation, distractingly so. I don't feel like I have enough playtime yet to assess the writing, but I haven't been impressed. It just feels flat.

Gameplay wise, I need to come to grips with the controls after devoting so much time to BOTW, but it feels pretty good. I've got to get used to the cover mechanic and movement during combat, but it'll come. Environments look good as well.

I'm already committed with a pre-order on the PS4 Pro, so it will be interesting to see how the game looks with more grunt behind it. Unfortunately, all the grunt in the world is not going to fix wonky facial models and awkward animation, or bland writing. It is what it is.

Enjoyed my time with it on X1 in spite of a rough frame rate. I could tell I'll sink many hours into it so I stopped and I'll wait to play this on my Pro next week. Can't wait to see it with more power and hopefully a consistent frame rate. Do we know if there are any graphics settings for it on there?

It's worth remembering that ME:A is a separate team from DA:I.

And, yeah, I agree. I think DA:I is still more visually impressive. Which I didn't expect given that DA:I was cross-gen.

Feels weird that they gave a team who have only done dlc and supporting roles one of their biggest IPs.

Edmonton had already made a trilogy and was done with the series. Montreal was a new studio that was eased into the the production pipeline via Arrival and Omega. Some Edmonton people were brought onto Andromeda like Mac Walters to be creative director. It made sense, just too bad that something went horribly wrong during those 5 years.

Once you hit the Nexus you know its a mass effect game. And all the quirks that come with that are there too

Eager to see if my Mass Effect fanboyism will let me tolerate all of the negative things posted, or not. I'm guessing yes but if you see me posting something negative about a ME game, there's a real problem. I'm that much of a fan. The ending of 3 didn't even bother me much, though the Citadel DLC was very welcome as "closure".

I was a DA fanboy too, not as much as ME but enough to be biased, and DA:I didn't live up to my expectations. Real curious to see how I feel about Andromeda.

There's a shitload of ME threads popping up, so I'll just keep impressions here. About 4 hours in.

- Good graphics, with some nice lighting and texture work. Characters even look nice at moments, but poor design hurts a lot of it.
- Traversal feels a lot better than previous MEs. Jetpack, and hovering mechanic feel like nice additions
- Shooting is dull. Weapons have no weight/impact to them. Enemies are bullet spongy at Hardcore difficulty and there is no locational damage. Biotics feel fine though, and I like the new Pull.
- Music is really understated. Disappointed in that so far, as themes in previous ME games were more prominent and memorable.
- Writing does not seem promising. Some awful lines here and there. There is a plot point or two that may seem interesting down the line, but nothing really stands out to me. Characters don't seem to have much depth, but obviously this can improve with time.

I'll keep going for the full 10 hours, but I'll definitely wait until reviews and way more impressions of the full game before I buy.

I'm unfamiliar with origin access. If you buy the game when it comes out, can you continue with the same save you started with the trial? I'd assume yes, but stranger things have happened

Played a few hours, just got to the Nexus; I don't know if it's just lowered expectations or the fact that I haven't gotten around to playing Zelda or Horizon, but I find that I'm really enjoying this thing.

Shooting's good, scanning gives heavy Star Trek vibes, and the plot hooks (what are these not-actually-that-old alien ruins, what's the Kett's beef, where are the other arks, etc.) presented so far have all grabbed my interest. It's better than Dragon Age: Inquisition was early on, that's for sure.

Graphically, it's aces. I'm playing on PC with a 1070, resolution scaler cranked up to 1.25 with a mix of Ultra and High settings. Yes, the human faces are bizarre but when everything else looks like heaven, they're somewhat more easily-ignored.

Companions haven't made enough of an impact on me as of yet to give a defined opinion; the best I can say is that they're inoffensive. Something I have noticed though is that they're a lot more talky in the field than their original trilogy counterparts, and while I imagine more than a few players will find it annoying, I like it; gives a grounded, more natural air to the whole ordeal you're going through in those opening few hours.

Of course, this could all change. I can't imagine I'll engage in crafting too much, as it was nearly the death of me in DA:I. On that same tangent, if the open world is as dull in this game as it was in Inquisition, it'll definitely be a hamper on my enjoyment. Also, the after-mentioned plot hooks and companion arcs could fail to pan out satisfyingly, which would pretty much kill my interest.

Still, it's not the DA2-esque doomsday scenario that others have been positing, that's for certain.

Yeah, you'll just carry on from wherever you were in the trial period.
