Yup.

Also yay for The Good Fight. Star Trek is absolutely getting renewed.
With the Netflix deal I'm guessing it is a no-brainer really.

Urgh, I wish someone would pick up The Good Fight over here, I need my Elsbeth. It's my reward for plowing through all 156 episodes last autumn+winter.
Yeah, it's a bit weird when people don't think that CBS doesn't know what they're doing with this. iirc, on their last earnings call, they were getting close to 2 million subscribers. They want 4 million by 2020. Completely doable.
As one of the pre-eminent All-Access bashers; I still think they're not handling it that well and they really should offer a tier that has both Showtime + CBS shows. From what I can tell the thing that saves All-Access is live viewing + sports, it's offering in terms of back catalogue is meager.

From the earnings call in July Showtime & All-Access were at around a million each, not two million for All-Access. And the 4 million goal is also for both. (or maybe that's what you meant?)

I gotta say that The Originals is some of the best tv I'm watching right now. I'm damn impressed at how they keep upping the quality of it all, and it's so definitely up there with TVD S1-3. Something always happens, and nothing feels like filler even though it's a 22-episode show. It's very much impressive.

The mutes were a thing in the second season of American Crime, and they only flash the screen black if the mouth is visible. Sounds like it carried over, as rare as it is!

Which season are you in?

Wait, American Crime on ABC has muted "fucks" and the screen goes black for a second so you can't read the actors' lips???

The Magicians on Syfy probably has about 10-20 f-bombs per episode and they censor them, but with the barest clipping possible, so the word sounds like f-ck. It's bizarre. The show should absolutely be on cable. It has drunken magican threesomes, magical prostitution, but no boobs or butts, and 10-20 f bombs an episode but no swearing.

No, they're both at/around/above? 1.5 million, and yes, the 4 million was for each. Which is completely doable.

Showtime's internet-only subscriber base has climbed to 1.5 million, while CBS All Access — the broadcaster's live and on-demand paid streaming service — is nearing the same number of subs, according to CBS CEO Leslie Moonves.

I mean, you can bash them all you want, but the service hit a little under 1.5 million subscribers with nothing original on it. Getting to their goal of 4 million after launching The Good Fight/Star Trek/whatever else they have seems completely realistic. People were hypberolic and treated this like it was Crackle or doomed to fail, when it probably wasn't, even if the idea of having to pay for The Good Fight and Star Trek might irk people.

(ess why eff why is cable)

I'm impressed by both CBS Access and Showtime's streaming subscriber numbers. I thought that they'd both struggle to get traction in the face of the other SVOD platforms and HBO, evidently not.

In February the head of Time Warner Jeff Bewkes said in an earning call that HBO Now has over 2 million subscribers. I thought that HBO, which launched in April 2015, would have a bigger lead of these two by now.

HBO's over-the-top service, HBO Now, still represents a small portion of HBO's 49 million domestic subscribers, but it's growing. In fact, it's accelerating. Time Warner (NYSE:TWX) CEO Jeff Bewkes announced that the company surpassed 2 million domestic HBO Now subscribers during the company's fourth-quarter earnings call. He later added that subscriptions tripled in 2016 compared to the end of 2015, which implies closer to 2.4 million subscribers.

The shows I like on CBS would not make me become a subscriber since theyre in the free five episodes range. (Zoo and The Price is Right), I guess if the price is right is ever put behind a paywall then Id become a subscriber.

Are we that backed up that just getting weekend numbers?

In my defence, you said "earnings call" so I googled for, and got the numbers from their Q2 earnings call. The numbers in that Variety article is from something called UCLA Anderson’s Pulse Entertainment, Sports & Technology Conference (... that is a mouthful).

Yeah, and I forgot they had sports rights. Those tend to matter, though have no idea what exactly they have the rights to and how popular it is. And dammit I have better things to do than learning about the relative popularity of foreign sports franchises.

I will still bang on about how they should consolidate their offerings, I can't be 100% certain that the American market mirror the Swedish one in this regard but all major TV players now offer (at least partially) consolidated streaming services (i.e. most content from multiple channels with the same owner is available on one service), it is the only way for them to stay competitive/relevant. I'm not sure where the ceiling is for CBS/Showtime (especially w/r/t sports) but taking a look at their offerings I just don't see them as being competitive in the long run.

There actually is a somewhat close analogue with scripted content (imported+original) from the second largest linear broadcasting network (the analogue for CBS) now being available on the streaming service of the cable network (the analogue for Showtime). The analogue totally breaks down when it comes to sports since in this case the sports rights are with the cable equivalent.
(and it breaks down even further since they originally planned for a fully consolidated streaming service but had to cancel it after spending more than 11$million and just fucking it up)

- EW: 12 Monkeys renewed for fourth and final season.
Syfy has renewed 12 Monkeys for a fourth and final season, EW has learned exclusively.
EW can also reveal that the third season will debut on May 19 at 8 p.m. ET. In a surprising move, Syfy will air the entire 10-episode season over three consecutive nights starting Friday, May 19 and concluding Sunday, March 21 — the first four episodes will premiere on Friday, with three episodes airing each night on both Saturday and Sunday from 8 p.m.-11 p.m. ET.

- For The First Time In Its 40+ Year History, SNL Will Air Live On West Coast
For the first time in its history, Saturday Night Live‘s title will be true for the entire continental United States, as this season’s final four episodes will air live in the Mountain and Pacific time zones, as well as Eastern and Central like usual.

Those four episodes will be hosted by Jimmy Fallon (April 15), Chris Pine (May 6), Melissa McCarthy (May 13), and Dwayne Johnson (May 20), and will be broadcast live at 11:30 p.m. Eastern, 10:30 Central, 9:30 Mountain, and 8:30 Pacific. (The episodes will then repeat in their usual 10:30 and 11:30 timeslots for, respectively, Mountain and Pacific.)

For its entire 40-year history, SNL — like most of live TV across those decades — aired on tape delay to the western half of the United States. But most of the big live TV events now get simulcast across the country, and with SNL having its most-watched season in 24 years — and, thanks to Alec Baldwin as Donald Trump, McCarthy as Sean Spicer, and Kate McKinnon as half the Trump administration, its most talked-about in years — it seemed time to stop letting the good people of California have the whole show spoiled for them on Twitter.

“SNL — enjoying its most popular season in two decades — is part of the national conversation, and we thought it would be a great idea to broadcast to the west and mountain time zones live at the same time it’s being seen in the east and central time zones,” said Robert Greenblatt, Chairman, NBC Entertainment in a statement. “That way, everyone is in on the joke at the same time. Kudos to Lorne Michaels, the producers and cast for making SNL one of the most relevant and anticipated shows in the zeitgeist.”

This is really weird... are they basically just dropping the show? At least they're giving it a final season.

It's definitely weird, but to give it that two-season bump at the same time is interesting. Maybe it's a test, to see how well episode dumps do for future reference. I'd be super intrigued if more networks tried this in some form. I think it worked out well for Starz with The Girlfriend Experience and Lifetime with the first four UnReal episodes (those were online, though).

This week is finally starting to come in:

Unless you're singing or faking a relationship, you're going down in flames!

America's Funniest Home Videos: 5.3 million viewers and a 1.0 18-49
Once Upon a Time: 3.0 million viewers and a 0.9 18-49
Time After Time: 2.2 million viewers and a 0.6 18-49
American Crime: 2.7 million viewers and a 0.5 18-49

Season 27 of America's Funniest Home Videos was ABC's top rated show for the night in both total viewers and in the demo.

That is fascinating for a slew of reasons.

This is really weird... are they basically just dropping the show? At least they're giving it a final season.

Honestly, this is great news. I'm surprised they've been able to keep it interesting for 2 entire seasons, let alone getting the third season which is airing soon and now a fourth and final one.

It's hard to believe AFV is still even on the air, it should've ended like 20 years ago never mind the last 10+ years with Youtube. I haven't watched a full episode of that show since the very early 90s... Actually I might've watched some reruns after that but I lost interest the more it became blatantly obvious it became people were staging things. America's Funniest People at least was more forth coming with it.

That's odd that they're just burning through it like that but at least it's getting a final season, I'll look forward to not having to wait a month and a half to watch the season even if it'll just make the wait for the last one a couple months longer.

Flash needs a major rehab.
Though Arrow had an amazing rehab and is getting series lows, it is sad.

Yeah, there's definitely things that are within the Arrowverse shows' control (plotting, mostly) and there things that are outside of their control (the general trend of TV watching habits, general superhero fatigue to an extent).

I imagine all of the shows won't dip much if at all for the rest of the season but next season has me somewhat worried. I could see Flash not really being able to recover and once again pull in the big numbers outside of the crossovers.

It's fascinating so many people in America don't have the internet to see funny videos any time they want.

I think there is a misunderstanding about AFHV's success here. For the most part, they aren't just pulling videos off the internet like a family friendly Tosh.0. They actually buy/license the videos for exclusive use.

Their continued success is based on not being able to get the same thing off the internet.

Right, but their videos aren't any funnier than the random YouTube video...

This isn't really true. AFV doesn't require people to not share videos online. In fact, AFV does actively pursue online content. They don't simply passively wait for submissions. Their licenses do restrict people from giving the videos to other shows, however. Plus, AFV heavily leverages their content library in a variety of YouTube shows/formats.

The Ryan Murphy Network picked up another series from, you guessed it, Ryan Murphy.
Written by Murphy, frequent collaborator Brad Falchuk (AHS, ACS, Glee) and Steven Canals, an up-and-coming writer discovered by Murphy, Pose has gotten the go-ahead from FX for an October production start in New York, with Murphy directing the first episode as he does on all of his series.

Set in 1986, Pose examines the juxtaposition of several segments of life and society in New York City: the emergence of the luxury Trump-era universe, the downtown social and literary scene and the ball culture world.

Murphy has begun casting for the show, which is expected to feature largely new and unknown performers.

Deadline puts a handy summary of what he's got coming up at The Ryan Murphy Cinematic Universe:
Murphy is in various stages of production on the third and second installments of American Crime Story: Katrina and Versace; He's prepping the seventh season of American Horror Story and just announced that the second Feud installment will tackle Prince Charles and Princess Diana.
So, here's how I think it's going to go; AHS might just squeeze into this fall, then Katrina in the spring, this in the summer, Versace in the fall, Feud spring 2019.

Right, but their videos aren't any funnier than the random YouTube video...

Bob Saget didn't cast a spell on the show, either.

It has a few things going for it that make it hard to compete with, chief among them the fact that they have a near-30 year database of searchable videos that they -- and only they -- can pull from.

I mean, I don't watch the show either. I don't think it's particularly funny either. But people watch it and haven't switched over to the internet while that exact behavior has badly affected other shows.

I'll cop to the fact that my info is based almost entirely off of a piece that ran in Wired about 6 years ago: https://www.wired.com/2011/04/ff_afv/
