Mass Effect: Andromeda - EA/Origin Access trial coming March 16th - 10 hour trial

It's interesting juxtaposing the Mass Effect community thread with "front page" GAF'fers. In the community thread several years after ME3 came out, discussions revolved around the best sound tracks, the most difficult choices of a huge branching story line, the meanings behind the Codex, favorite characters and moments, multiplayer builds and strats, etc. Very few here seems to be giving their observations on our limited understanding based on 10 hour trial, of the things that made ME great.

Front page GAF, they attack the topic du'jour in front of them with "hot takes", memes and graphics comparisons. You'll find people calling themselves true fans who are not going to make a purchase till change happens. These same people rarely visit the community threads of any game, which is where I find the best gaming social community. I don't think these people are true fans if you don't understand why a fan base talks about a game 4-5 years after release.

Sorry I'm ranting, this is a game I hold dear so I fell compelled to raise this observation. I look forward to these discussions when we all get to play and make choices and discuss the story like a book club would.

"True fans"? You don't have to join a dedicated thread on NeoGAF to be a certified fan, do you? I have a CE copy of Mass 3 on display in a glass cabinet, if that counts towards anything? Am I allowed to feel let down by Andromeda now? Should I run it by the community thread first?

Opinions vary, and of course the opinions in a thread 100% devoted to the celebration of a specific series will be more positive than those found in a thread involving a much broader spread of players checking out a trial of a new game. Don't take that to heart. Personally, as a (possible) fan of the series, I think the trial has shown the game trying too hard to merely be a Mass Effect game, whereas the reason I loved Mass 1 so much is because it was trying to be a great RPG, introducing brand new mechanics to the genre that had never been attempted before, and with a level of graphical polish that was unrivalled for its time. Andromeda feels more like a check list of what a Mass Effect game should be, rather than what a modern day RPG on a new generation of hardware could be. I'm sure it will be a good game, but it certainly doesn't seem like it's striving to be a great game. I get the feeling this will be another Fallout 4, turning out to be a good game but letting down people with loftier expectations hoping the game will do something new and impressive.

You can be a "true" fan without visiting the community thread. The game clearly has issues. People are pointing those out. If they're this apparent early on, I don't imagine that to change much over the course of the game. Doesn't mean the game is not good though, but it certainly doesn't make for a good first impression , which is all this trial can give.

Lol @ calling people who don't visit community threads 'fake' fans. People interested in this game don't have to prove themselves. It's really not that serious.

I rarely visit any community thread. It's cool that 'deeper' conversations go on there, but quit it with the elitism plz.

I don't think we can compare HZD's and MEA's facial stuff. MEA's just isn't as good. Period.

What matters is how much that bothers you. It doesn't bother me as much as others but I understand if it puts people off.

seriously: what part of deciding horizon's facial stuff isn't perfect suddenly makes me:9's facial stuff suddenly acceptable, anyway? :) ...

I didn't describe myself as "true fan" but I can easily find people who have described themselves as such, who clearly are not, just to say that they are not buying.

I'm really early into my trial, 2 bronze MP matches, and 45 minutes in SP, here are some impressions. I loved the ME trilogy, and enjoyed DA:O and DA:I.

-Combat feels a little off from the trilogy, guns feel weak (especially base guns in MP). Combat is clicking with me now. There's just a something a little different (might be move to Frostbite from U3), but I've gotten use to it and like it.
-Character creator is not good. I ended up just choosing default. Still true.
-The visuals are fine overall, but something about the faces looks off. To me, ME3 looks better in this regard. Dragon Age Inqusition had pretty good faces, I don't understand how MEA can be worse give it's 2.5 years later and not a cross gen game. The faces and facial animations are not good - ME:A might the worst faces I've seen in a AAA game this generation. I definitely think it was better in ME3.
-Clancy Brown is great as the Pathfinder (your father). A great voice for this role.
-Item scanning, I feel like I'm going to be walking around with this up all the time, so I don't miss anything. After playing a bit it's easier to tell what is probably an item so scan, so you don't always need to the have scanner out.
-A feel like the camera is a bit more zoomed out than the trilogy, especially when aiming (though I could be wrong). It does seem ever so slightly more zoomed out, but it works well.
-Not sure yet if I like the jump jet, same with boost instead of roll/dodge/evade. I'll have to play more to get a better feel for these things. Boost feels good. Jump jet is pretty good, though I'd prefer if it behaved more like TF2. Either way still fun, and I like the hover.
-UI is not good, and a step back from the trilogy. There's too much on screen, and everything is quite small. I found this especially apparent during character selection in Multiplayer. Playing on a 49 inch TV 9 feet away, the text is too small. The UI and menus are cluttered. I'm sure it works better on PC, but I do not enjoy it.
-I bought (with in game credits) 3 of the bronze MP crates, and got nothing but crap. You do get bonus crates for having played ME3 and DA:I, as well as completing the tutorial. Loot balance seems fair.
-I like the "tone" options in dialogue, those indicators give a better feel or how you want your response to be. I'm still liking the new system, but at the same time miss the paragon and renegade options.
-Dialogue seems ok so far. I'm enjoying it for the most part. Banter is a bit more than I'd like. Dialogue seems no worse (or better) that the trilogy.
-Melee: I know ME:A will have unique melee weapons, I'm interested to see how that changes melee. Initially though, it seems as if a charged melee attack is no longer an option, which is disappointing. Still longing for the charged melee attack.
-Performance has been ok, but with some glitches in MP. Day 2 MP - no glitches
-I'm interested to see where the story goes, I like the initial premise though. Story has me hooked

An update on my earlier impressions in bold above, having played 3 hours of campaign and 4 (bronze) MP matches.

MP plays great. So far, I don't like the maps as much as ME3, but they're still good enough so that I have a good time. I'd like to see more enemy variety, hopefully that can be added as free DLC. It would especially be great if Geth and Collectors could be brought it, even if it doesn't make sense for the story, it would be fun to play. I'll definitely be spending a lot of time playing MP.

I'm really liking the story so far. The opening mission felt a bit like Dragon Age: Inquistion, with how the map was laid out, and the icons noting points of interest, but it felt more focused than DA:I. So far, I'm not really a fan of Liam or Cora, but there have been some other characters I've enjoyed.

Overall my impressions of the game today are a lot higher then they were yesterday.

I've put hundreds of hours into the series, but it's not on my mind every week of every year. There are enough lttp threads and such to get my fill of ME discussion without visiting the community thread (and tbh I've probably posted there, but not regularly enough for anyone to remember).

My deluxe edition from Best Buy just shipped today...so I guess I'll get a first hand look at it pretty soon? I love the Mass Effect series, even though with all these videos and impressions that make me a little iffy, I'm still excited to play through this game.

Serously. These are just video games. Not exclusive clubs that require you to pass some initiation or set of requirements before you can be considered a 'true fan.'

Finished the trial today.

I was a bit scared after all the bad stuff here, but really liked what I played in the end.

Facial animation was not up to the standard, but everything else I thought was pretty good -- I found the combat really fun with the new dash and jump mechanics, a lot the items are interesting, I liked driving the Nomad and exploring and the story has me intrigued.

I'll still wait for the reviews before buying, but I'm very interested after playing the trial.

Over the course of the 10 hour trial, I opened 11 of the "Super Premium" or whatnot packs in the multiplayer store. The ones that cost 100k credits or 300 Biodollars

I received:
  • 1 Ultra Rare Weapon
  • 1 Ultra Rare Character - The Asari Duelist

Not great odds in the gamble boxes, and it seems the consumables and boosters are used to take up space. As for the Asari Duelist, the cool-sounding Vanguard with the sword, shes not that great. Her melee attack with the sword forces you to do a teleport animation which takes about 2.5 seconds, and moves you a good bit forward at the same time whether you like it or not. I couldn't find use for the barrier ability since dodging and cover was always the better option if you don't want to take damage. Only upside seemed to be that your dodge is replaced with a cosmetic teleport.

Multiplayer worked a lot better today, although I think the only way to truly not encounter lag is to host yourself. Audio completely cut out for me at one point and had to restart, but at least I didn't hard crash every other match like a couple streamers I'm watching.

One thing that is giving me hope is that I keep thinking back to when Assassin's Creed Unity came out and people were posting all of these hilarious glitches, yet none of that stuff ever happened to me and I loved the game. It would be nice if a similar scenario played out here.

Same! I ended up being glitch free, and hoping for the same when I play here.

Just got to the Nexus and decided to take a break. That Krogan sounds EXACTLY like Mr. Slave from Southpark lmao!! I did not expect that. So good.

I like this game the more I play it. I'm starting to get over the facial animation issues too. Really starting to get into the story

Yup, uh... ditto ditto.

I play a lot of games where people complain about glitches and bugs yet they never seem to happen to me.

No glitches so far (4 hours of gameplay). I wish I could go back and tweak my character a little bit, and wish the animations were a bit better, and think the UI is really mediocre (some of it is immersion breaking and some of it seems needlessly complex), but otherwise I'm pretty much in on this. It feels like Mass Effect to me. Here's hoping there's a few new alien races to stumble upon, as that discovery is a big part of the game and something I felt was maybe lacking a bit in ME3 for me.

so what are the max skill trees? (MP) you can go above 6/6/6/6/0 right?

what's the new 6/6/6/4/4? can you get double fives, or one extra five, or?

are explosions still heavily weighed on your power level? shockwave's 6th evo is pretty meh but explosions are the only good thing the adept can really do

Anyone explain what strike missions are please.

Everytime I go on they are saying offline even though I have no other network issues.

Its kinda like the war table in dragon age if u did that. You send strike teams out on missions that take different amount of times. If they do the mission successfully, you get xp and a reward. Or you have the option of going into multiplayer and actually doing the mission.

I don't think they go live until Tuesday

Its live on xbox at least. I sent a team out to a mission the other day

Strike Missions are the Facebook Farm thing in ME:A much like it was in DA:I. You send teams off on missions that take real-time, like 50 minutes to 2 hours or more. When completed the team you sent gets xp and you get rewards if they succeed. Missions reward mission funds which can be spent on more teams, team buffs, or consumables in multiplayer.

Missions with the Apex symbol next to them can also be played by you in multiplayer, since if you want things done right you have to do it yourself. These missions have set rules like 50% less weapon damage but 100% more power dmg, etc.

It isn't explained well.

Strange. I couldn't access it yesterday. Maybe it was down at the time.

I can't wait to play more. Multi is great, but I Wana find out about who the kett are, and who the remant were!

The multiplayer is fantastic the game should review great based on that alone.

HOLY SHIT!!! That multiplayer is something FIERCE! I blew my entire ten hours on multiplayer alone and im hooked. I couldnt get enough of that shit, so much, that I think I may start another origin account, buy another origin access and play some more, even knowing that none of that progress will carry over since it's on another account.

Shit is that good to me. The game runs like butter at the smoothest frames and never dropping below 60 on my high end rig. Got a GTX 1080 with a i7 processor, so ultra everything.

I can't fucking wait till the game is released on tuesday.

Yeah, I can confirm the the MP, when not lagging, is really fun. It looks kind of shitty on the Xbox, but boy is it fun. HARD as fuck, too. Looking forward to playing on the Pro.

I don't believe it will as most people won't take MP that much into account. Hell even COD MP barely factors into the reviews when that is the bread and butter of the series. The reviews will live and die on the campaign mode.

You can't make a post like this without also posting proof. This feels like a massive assumption.

Also, no one is stopping you from staying in the community thread. I don't really understand why you felt the urge to paint such a huge brush on the posters in this thread.

I love Mass Effect. I have never posted in the community thread. I am disappointed with Andromeda. Those people do exist and you shouldn't make up excuses to claim why they don't.

So the reviews are on monday right?

Becase my EA Access sub ends on the 22th and i might want to buy it for the discount price if reviews tell me all is well, which sadly the trial hasn't fully done for me.

Apparently if you're not a blind fan or of blind faith then you're not a "real" fan. I have been a franchise fan since the first game- thrown numerous praises for the vision, music and for pushing fem shep in ME2 and 3 (a move that was preceded by criticism since they didn't push it hard enough in the beginning). After KoTOR, I felt that Bioware were really on to something (as sci-fi is my fav genre).

And now that it's not meeting my (among many others') expectation on a technical level (which is hampering the tone conveyed by voice acting as well) given the time in development, budget (hopefully) technological progress and in presence of competition (which is meant to be a positive push for all devs), I got diagnosed with having subconscious that seeks the "ideal woman" and labelled "not a real fan".

Well, to them I say: thank you and piss off.

I just finished one now. My first time playing mp in Mass Effect actually. It is ok distraction and it is somewhat tied to sp so I could see myself doing a few matches here and there but that's about it.

Also no idea why but was getting these weird hiccup/slowdowns time to time which are totally absent in sp.

Spoiler about a certain character you meet:

Peebee, when you first met her, then before you have to continue scanning the other remnant structures, did anyone talk to her immediately again? You ask her a question, then Cora interjects with something and Peebee goes, "Oh look! You know things! I know things, too!"

I almost keeled over from laughter.

I'm a true fan and I never visited the Mass Effect OT. I played Counter Strike for 3 years and never once step foot into the OT once I got approved on GAF. I owned almost 2000 steam games and I only posted once step foot into the Steam OT (maybe). I've bought and played every Tales games ever released since Symphonia and I've never been to the Tales OT.

Just because people don't visit a community thread. Doesn't mean they don't care about a game series. Sometimes they're content or happy with what they have gotten from a series and doesn't feel the need to discuss anything more.

I have an 'N7' wristband I've been wearing almost daily since Mass Effect 3 came out. It's one of my favorite accessories. I think that prove how much of a 'true fan' I am of the series.

Your logic is so flawed it has its own Wikipedia page: No true Scotsman

So I'm a huge fan of Mass 1 (my favourite in the series) and I've put 7+ hours into the trial now. For the most part, I'd say it's capturing that Mass 1 story vibe better than 2 and 3 did so far, but so far for all the same reasons that The Force Awakens recaptured A New Hope's story vibe. It very much feels like "same shit different day", but for all the right reasons.

HOWEVER

And it's a pretty big however. One of the main reasons I loved Mass 1 is because it was trying something completely refreshing. Not only was it a brand new IP, it was one of the first successful RPGs to really integrate action-based shooting mechanics into a role playing combat system. It introduced the dialogue wheel as a brand new method of conversation to video games, and it was insanely impressive by visual standards. The game very much felt like it was trying to move the genre forwards (and absolutely did, of course). Andromeda on the other hand... well it isn't moving anything forwards. If anything it's as though it's striving to stay BEHIND the curve. So while games like The Witcher 3 have redefined expectations when it comes to writing (even for side quests), environment design, and completely seamless open world environments, Andromeda is doing absolutely nothing new, and only relying on rebuilding everything Mass Effect as a series had already done last gen but in a modern engine. And it doesn't even take advantage of an industry-leading engine to push visuals and animation quality - even those aspects make it feel like a PS3.5 game.

Finally, where story is concerned it's impossible to say where that quality will sit overall, but most Bioware fans mean they love character writing when they mention story. Bioware have always struggled with writing plots, whether that's with games that have basic plotlines so short they need to pad 80% of the game with entirely disconnected side plots (DA:O), no real plotline to speak of at all that instead relies purely on character writing and development (Mass Effect 2), or in the case of Mass Effect 1 a plot line that is completely broken right from the very start: Saren is looking for the Conduit so he can get inside the Citadel and flip the switch that calls for the Reapers. He needs this backdoor entrance from the Conduit because his Spectre status has been revoked and he is branded as a criminal for his actions during his... search for the Conduit... hmmm. But what Mass 1 did succeed in was creating this sense of mystery and an ancient evil beyond comprehension, all drip fed at perfect intervals throughout the game. And so far Andromeda seems to be setting up a similar ancient mystery. My only concern here is that the writing team couldn't deliver on Mass 1's Reaper mystery. They set it all up perfectly with Mass 1, completely ignored it in Mass 2 and created the Collectors for you to deal with instead while they worked out what to do about the Reapers in Mass 3, which amounted to... well not much of anything. Most fans will still agree that the Reaper story (especially Harbinger) was left unfinished. We've all had to create headcanon endings.

So to me Andromeda will depend on a quality story, and quality character writing, which at this point is anyone's guess. We'll have to wait on reviews and our own playthroughs to see if it delivers there. But when it comes to the other elements that made Mass 1 so great (brand new industry-leading advancements in gameplay and visuals) Andromeda brings nothing to the table, and if anything disappoints. I'm worried this will be another Fallout 4 - a decent enough game that feels mostly "by the numbers", doesn't really excel at anything in particular, and fails to meet fans' lofty expectations set by previous entries in the series.

This is a pretty good write-up of what went right with ME1 and how this game seems to relate to that. It seems to me like BioWare is just trying to go back to ME1 and clean up some of its jankiness which is what the sequels should have done in the first place.

That said, I have always fantasized about a space RPG that actually does take ME1's ideas further instead of just revisiting them. I've wanted to see someone like CDProjekt or Obsidian write a space RPG (I haven't played KOTOR 2). One of my main dream games would be for someone to take a physical universe like the ones in Elite Dangerous and No Man's Sky and craft an actual main quest in it akin to Mass Effect.

The issue with this is that AAA developers don't seem to be pushing the envelope that much in terms of technological gameplay possibilities. They're all more interested in either creating more "cinematic" experiences (which started after COD4 happened) or working out new systems for player retention. They're not as interested in creating worlds that feel bigger and more interactive with more possibilities for players. One reason I was so cautiously optimistic about Ghost Recon Wildlands is it seemed like it actually was trying to push world scale and emergent gameplay to the next level for third person shooters, but right now at least it seems to be just a "dumb fun" co-op shooter with points spread all over a bigger map. This is why people are so tired of open-world games when open-world used to mean a bigger environment with more possibilities.

People like GTA V, Witcher 3, and Breath of the Wild so much because those games actually did feel like they pushed the envelope and set new standards for things like world design, environmental depth, and quest writing in the case of Witcher 3. Those games felt like they were providing worlds that didn't feel possible before while everybody else is just trying to find new ways to give people bars to fill. The idea of a space exploration game is perfect for this but no AAA developers are actually trying to develop that idea.

I thought mine looked really good during character creation

She looks god awful in game.

Feels bad man

Same, although I remember having the same issue with past Mass Effect games too.

My Ryder has giant gaping eyes and constantly dilated pupils.
