Limited Run Games - Putting digital games into your hands

The problem is, if you aren't going to put any effort into learning who out there is good to pay attention to or trust, then what's the point of media outlets putting out the effort to give the right games to the right people? Obviously a perfect world would be every site having every game reviewed by people qualified to review them, but that isn't always going to happen, yet there are people legitimately trying to give good coverage of niche and/or Japanese games outside of the super enthusiast sites.

With how hard it is at times to get higher-ups to care about giving coverage to the smaller games, those site that do really need the support.

There's so much nuance when you start to flip over rocks. If you give a shmup game to a standard person they'll review it poorly because it's either too hard (lots of fail) or too easy (they credit fed it in 30 minutes). If you have a typical fan of the genre, they will probably praise it as they are starved for such content. If you give it to a technical player that can 1cc such games, they might just shred it because of a lot of faults most players won't notice. Inaccurate slowdown, too much boss milking, not enough boss milking, some scoring flaw that can be exploited..

There really isn't any perfect solution.

Welp, I cracked and opted to bite the bullet once more with ordering from 8bit for "Drifter." Added another copy of "Rez Infinite " which I was already thinking about reordering since both art covers, original and replacement, arrived in bent condition. Have to criticize their shipment options as its ridiculous for USPS to be about $50 domestic. I settled on FedEx for cost purposes, but I hope they'll still sent to my P.O. box.

On a related note, I bought all three titles in the morning batch. Really excited for "Astebreed," but I'm admittedly unsure about the other two games. At worst, I'll probably sideline "Pang Adventures" as something that I might not ever make a priority similar to "The Swindle" and "Rainbow Moon" in my collection.

Fedex Smartpost is the only one that will deliver to a PO Box so I have no clue how they are going to respond to you. Also I opted for a copy as well but I do wish a better company had this. The fact that everything is produced means it should have no snags though.

The best setup I've seen so far, is RPGamer. You get not one, but often several reviews for a single game. They give you pros and cons, difficulty level, time length to complete (great feature for RPGs, especially), their write-ups on it, and a score. You get people that enjoy these games, go in-depth and actually complete them, and you get a variety of different views for it.

Definitely grabbed that Hyper Light Drifter from iam8bit. I am weary of them, but they seem to have copies in hand and shipping Monday. I do really like the play-asia cover better, but this is a bit more convenient for me.

Um...isn't that what some of us are saying we are doing? Not sure what the issue is with posting about it :P

I mean, if you (not literally you, just a "you" in general to everyone) like the release then power to you, but people shouldn't get all up in arms when others say they will be skipping some mediocre games.

I haven't addressed any of those posts.

I did take issue, however, with the post hoping these games weren't released at all.

The problem is, as someone who works for an outlet that was doing that to some degree (EGM with three-person reviews in print), and who started out at a publication built around that (GameFan), that set-up is nearly impossible these days unless you have people working for free or very cheap.

I love the idea too, but man, it's so, so hard. We were doing maybe fifteen games an issue like that, and it just killed us every month—and that was even with us having the rule that "second opinions" didn't need to have beaten the game fully. And that was when companies were more open to giving out physical copies that could be passed around, which is getting to be far less the case anymore.

Anyway! So off topic.

We really getting played paying $25 for something that's instantly worth $40 when it arrives at your door

ripoff really

Not much profit to be had after ebay or amazon takes a cut. Again, I think some think these games are way more valuable than they actually are. Especially since most buy to sell.

It is literally impossible for most to buy to sell -- by definition, the market price would collapse to zero.

I think you missed his point. It's not about profit if you resell it. His bigger point is that these games keep their value and often for more than what we paid for them. Try saying that for like 99% of games released these days, you can't.

Alright, got Astebreed this time, though the site was acting weird. It kept telling me my Amazon Pay session had expired (because it was reading my attempt from this morning)? Too a few clicks of the pay button to get out of that loop.

Got an order for Astebreed in after literally sleeping on it this morning. Hype!

This is actually my first time ordering from them besides Skullgirls - when should I expect this to ship out?

Decided not to get anything this time, not because I didn't like the games or anything.
I don't think I'm into buying disc based games anymore. Will likely sell my existing games and convert to digital.

Will stick to cart collecting. So handhelds only for me.

Dang. That's no fun :(

Heh, end of an era for me. Just have to stop the enormous collection somewhere and digital is so convenient for consoles.
Switch, Vita and 3DS collecting will continue though while they last. It won't be too much as the latter 2 are fading out and I don't think my Switch library will be too big aside from mainly Nintendo titles.

I'm with you, I feel the main draw of portables is how self contained they are. So carrying around a bag of vita games feel super satisfying to me.

Sell me your Oddworld for cheaps!

I missed both time slots for Astebreed :/
It's been a long time since I scoured eBay for LRG copies. I'll take my time and hope I find a reasonable seller.

Pang and MKH stalled in the 44-48% range. I haven't rally paid attention to the second batch before but seems like a lot of copies that need to be cleared.

Technically only 1/4th, not 1/2. Eh, they'll sell. This isn't the first time it took a couple days for something to sell.

You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Enough.

It was a question, not a statement. I've never played any of those 4 games.

That should help clarify how honestly you were debating the issue by pointing to Metacritic, so thanks.

I have no idea what you are talking about. I never mentioned Metacritic, and I very rarely bother with it.. I realize a couple of you were moving the goalposts around , but again.. my concern is that they need to distill the quality to maintain their brand. That's it. I want them to be around to do what they do.

If we were talking about my personal taste I'd be advocating that they only release shmups, as anything else was a waste of time. But no, I didn't post that because I realize there's a big world out there. People seem to be taking an emotional stance that they should release every single game possible, like they are saving puppies or something. Take a step back and there is a business, a brand, plus finite time and resources.

No selling out instantly is a GOOD THING what are you people even talking about. This is literally what people have been asking for. By the point they will actually start shipping those games next week everything will be sold out, what more could you want?

If there are still copies left after a week, then there could be a problem

If they had only printed 3,5k copies of those games they would be long gone and there wouldn't even be a discussion. And it still would have been worth it for everyone involved.

How's MITSURUGI KAMUI HIKAE on PS4? I saw Total Biscuits review of the PC version out of curiosity. Are there any big differences between the two?

I also want to point out that MKH and Pang are games from AGM Playism and DotEmu respectively, which opens the doors to some big opportunities.

But I guess that doesn't matter because metacritic and the "brand"

Can't wait to have the same discussion again when the "questionable" Ray Gigant is released. I mean who needs a connection to Bandai Namco lol

Seriously. Not to even disparage the games as merely stepping stones but people fail to see the bigger picture.

Nobody "fails to see the bigger picture" here. People have only so much disposable income. Why would they spend that on games they may not really want, only to potentially get a chance at other games they might actually want in the future?

I would say the number of people who have cash to spare to just keep supporting LRG at every release for the sake of it and regardless of whether they actually want the games or not is rather limited.

Hey look at that, HMK is down to 4% and Pang is at 7%. Looks like there won't be any issue getting those sold out.

So, LRG.....let the discussions with Playism about Momodora begin? ;)

BIg day, hopefully something for everyone
