Prey Demo: Opening Hour Thread: Everything is Going to Be OK

Played the demo, I actually liked it a lot. Will echo the complaints about the musical cues being off, game would be a lot more tense if they were subdued or didn't kick up until you started fighting/got hit. Gonna wait to see how PC performance is before I make the final call to buy it sooner versus later.

Yea, you're right. I didn't realize the SS remaster was slated for 2018.

The rumors of Deus Ex being put on ice, Dishonored 2 not selling better than it did, and the tepid response I've seen to Prey has me wary. But yes, there will be games like this whether AAA, or indie.

I'll keep an eye out for them.
I think this game and System Shock remaster doing well is a good thing for Deus Ex. Might mean they decide to give it another shot and finish the story.

So the music goes to 11 when a little bug appears, I one-shot it with a wrench, and the music continues like I'm in the hellmouth.

Is the final game going to be like this? It's really annoying and unduly stressful.

After reading the thoughts on here I almost passed on playing the demo and was going to wait for the reviews.

Played it and dug the hell out of it. Won't preorder due to buying Nier Automata on release day and not even starting it yet, but I'm most definitely going to pick it up at some point

i just realized something in the demo
when you chose the female dr morgan, the
person is talking to you is a women
.
when you chose the male dr morgan, the p
erson is talking to you is a man
.
i think that
the person is talking to you is actually you,but maybe a recording or your mind was put in someplace or you are just copy not the real body and the real body is dead, that's explain the 3rd test when you see they didn't see anything or something like that, you are not real human, you are just one of those shades.

Yeah I thought that was obvious that that
person was Morgan themselves.
They even state it in the video. I'm talking to myself. Also, you'll notice that January corresponds with your gender as well.

More like
Morgan's past self knee what they were doing to her, so she made a bunch of videos for her future self and has an Operator using her voice to help her future self on case things go to shit (Which they do as the Typhon breaks containment and almost takes over Talos I in one day)

Keep in mind that
uninstalling a Neuromod resets your memory back to.the moment you first put it in. That's why Morgan's memories full of holes

Wait what? Is this true? This would be terrible and I'd cancel my preorder. I've already payed 6 hours to collect everything and get every important item.
Why? If you played six hours of a "first hour" demo, it's clearly something you really enjoy.

And considering the full game won't be locked off, you won't be doing the same things, in the same way.

So apparently, some people on Prey subreddit managed to glitch their way to areas they were not intended to explore and encountered other kinds of Typhon enemies.

Guess I understand why they didn't release the demo on PC.

While this is true I have to spend hours to find all the items, keycards, codes etc again. I don't know if I wanna do this tbh.

tbf, I almost certainly will. There's nothing that's locked off in the demo that you'd necessarily do before any of the other content. There's no reason to make you start the game again.

The demo is different from the main game. For instance, they don't just hand you that shotgun on the floor in the hallway at the beginning of the lobby. I'm guessing they tweaked the amount of resources lying around as well, maybe even Neuromods.

Apologies if this has already been asked, but is there a recommended difficulty setting? I like a challenge but don't wanna be dying every encounter. Cheers

Maybe it's because I've been playing games like Nier and Horizon, but this felt clunky as hell. Story was a bunch of audio logs wrapped around a pretty stock sci fi plot, and it did not grab me at all. After what has been a brilliant spring for games, this really felt like a big step back.

Yeah, that's why I asked about weapons. They basically give you almost every weapon in the game in the demo. Seemed odd to get so much at the start of the game

You can tell it's a stock sci-fi story so early? To be fair, I'm partly biased in really liking Chris Avellone's writing so I'd expect more from him than generic sci-fi

Plus there were hints of
Lovecraftian/cosmic horror
, so I dont think it's as boilerplate as you might think

Well, forget everything I've said. I would be okay with this. I thought the demo is pretty much the beginning of the full game. Seems like they changed things.

I like a good challenge and thought Normal was actually difficult enough at least for the demo purposes. It's not hard per se but definitely not easy I think.

I got that too. The demo didn't have that shock and awe like the Bioshock games, it's "oh early twist and not-hugely-interesting writing and delivery yes of course". But I guess it's how the story is executed that'll matter most in the end. Also using the computers to read emails etc. seems cumbersome, I kept trying to use the D-pad to move between them/scroll down.

And I don't know... what kind of response the enemies in the game are meant to elicit. Not scary, as the art style just doesn't mesh with the horror vibe at all for me. Not intriguing, because they're just... visually just black things of stuff you'd find in other games (barring the mimic stuff). Unnerving? No, more just annoying. Walk in a room and wait to see if you get attacked.

So far, Prey looks like a game I'd play when I have nothing else to play, but not something I'd feel particularly compelled to boot up. I hope I'm wrong for my sake.

I mean...the demo is pretty much the beginning of the full game lol. Like I said, all they've mentioned previously in videos is the shotgun in the hallway was just placed there for previews/demoing, so it's possible that's the only noticeable change. There will probably still be a shotgun in
the security room
for example, because that just makes sense.

If you spent 5-6 hours with it, then it shouldn't take you "hours" to get re-equipped and the same doors opened up in the lobby in the full game.

it's strange the save file won't carry to the demo
anyway, hope the full game fix the problems,at least fix the very annoying music that comes with every fucking mimic or low health.seriously, every time a mimic appears that music come and wont go away until 2 minutes.
it's stupid.

the game is already leaked 3 days ago in UAE

C-pi5EIXsAEazbu.jpg

also other game leaked too early

The first mimic I encountered the music came out of no where and scared the crap out of me. I didn't even see the mimic and had to search around and find it. Like many have said the music is a problem but overall I enjoyed the demo.

They freaking nailed the aesthetic here. Everything is just so fun to look at and the intial story reveals were actually really cool. Particularly when you are running through the little tests in the first 15 minutes and I'm like "Why the fuck am I doing this?"

I seriously didn't expect the abrupt turn that the game took from there.

After the second day when you wake up in the apartment and realize shit isn't quite right was awesome. What was really crazy was getting into the elevator in the test lab and realizing that the elevator doesn't even take you to other floors, it's all just part of the simulation.

So torn if I'm actually going to buy this game near or at launch. The initial storytelling was soooo well done though.

I hope the environments in the game will overall be the size and scope of the lobby and simulation areas. The areas were surprisingly big and open, the sim area was so interactive, and there was always something interesting to find. Like for some reason, I didnt expect to actually find someone in the quarantine area; the details were in an email and no little note or side mission notice popped up. Just thought it was flavor text until I went there and looked.

After that, I paid close attention to everything I read

Also liked how the game let you experiment with your tools. I got to the second floor bridge and got into a room in seemingly emergent/alternate ways

I remember just
hitting the fish tank randomly just to find out I was in a sim. I'm like why is there an area behind there. Didn't even know you could get out by the fake balcony.

Replaying the first day again, if you look at the ground in the 'apt' you can see scuff marks on the ground from the room rearranging so much. Also, in the 'reception area' of the first day you can see what looks like blood stains behind the furniture.

The problem is...I'll always have the feeling that I missed something in the full game that I didn't miss in the demo, even if it's just one audio log or weapon upgrade. I hate that.
And I will probably rush through the beginning because I've already played it.

The Bioshock 1 demo was perfect. They showed the beginning of the game but the demo itself was short.
There is already a huge WTF moment in the Prey demo after 20 minutes in. The demo should've stopped right after you entered the first open area (lobby) imo.

edit: Just found out Arkane helped working on Bioshock 2....well...I know why I already love Prey.

This kind of stuff is what actually has me close to doing a 180 even despite all my issues with it at this point. I need to see what reviews/impressions say about consistency and size, but the level design, attention to detail and intelligence put into those aspects ended up impressing me.

I really liked that some areas really required you to actually think and try out seemingly unusual things for a videogame like
using those slatted ceiling decor things in the lobby as traversal to reach the walkway on the other side
. In short, I want to support a game that trusts me to use my brain a little.

For me, if the level design and size is anything like Dishonored I'll be even more excited. I didn't really care about Prey, but then I played it I found myself enjoying it even though it has issues.

Very torn on this.

Basically everything outside of the combat is amazing. It looks & controls great on XBO, the interactivity is wonderful, the opening twist was great, and I really like the slow pace with a heavy emphasis on exploration. It's a super immersive world with killer aesthetics.

That combat tho... why do I have to spend my most frantic moments in the game facing the floor? Wrench versus Mimic mechanics are just frustrating, and even with the Gloo gun you still spend an inordinate amount of time swiveling your pov around your feet. Not fun.

I wanted this to be a day 1 purchase, but I think I'm going to wait for reviews.

... I'll still probably pick it up.

It explicitly tells you this is the case in the demo, when you go into Morgan's office and watch the video. If you missed that bit, good guess!

It reminds me of Half Life (headcrabs). You can (and should) use other weapons, no need to only use the wrench (it saves ammo though). Also, there's a mod to slow down time for ten seconds in combat...this helps a lot.

Honestly after spending a few minutes whacking these dumb things with a wrench I just uninstalled the demo. Did nothing for me at all.

!?!

Well that would be very helpful.

I didn't really explore the skill tree much, and I've been reading that your movement & agility can be increased as well.

I understand that taste is subjective, but given that Horizon is the most YA by numbers story (that I really enjoy) and Nier is silly nonsense (that I really enjoy), I'm surprised you don't think this very well written - far better written than either of those games - intelligent SF feels clunky. (And the criticism about narrative delivery? That's exactly how Horizon delivers its story. Audio logs and then some flashy cutscenes.)

All this demo did was make me wanna go back to Mankind Divided, which gets far too much hate imo. The story and characters may not be the best but the graphics, gameplay and atmosphere are on another level.
