Geoff Keighley: Scorpio rumored to cost $499 (he's right, flawless victory)

Not a trolling question: How much does playing 4K Blu-rays add to the cost of the X? It was enough for even Sony not to include the feature in the Pro, so I'm wondering if it really is a big factor in the higher price.
The XB1S can do UHD Blu Rays, so I can't imagine it would be too much. I think MS saw the X as a console hardcore players would get. Whether that pays off for them is anyone's guess, but I'd say it won't.

Why on Earth would Geoff leak the price in such close proximity to the event, when he hosts a show that people like Phil Spencer do him the courtesy of turning up to. Why would he risk fraying that relationship to confirm something not months, weeks or days, but hours in advance?

It still doesn't make sense to me.
Geoff is just reporting what he knows. That's what vidya journalists should be doing. Also MS could have given him permission to share it but even that is a stretch.

That's my issue with him. Such a dick move.

I don't know what everyone is apologizing about exactly but him leaking the price tag makes no sense to me with all things considered.

If you watched the post coverage it was pretty clear even Geoff was saying $499 was/is a mistake.

I don't see anything wrong with reporting what a majority of GAF thought was a fuckup.

This thread is great. I swear some of you kids don't know where Geoff came from and only know him as host of various games events. Dude was a great games journalist, lived to get stories out there and he was really good at it. That guy wouldn't risk his rep on anything that wasn't verified.

I apologize and take what I said back.

I'll eat my crow now

Please, you know that won't cut it.

Why is it a dick move for Geoff to be a journalist and report stuff?

Does he have to bend to your preferred corporate overlord for you to respect him?

It looks like a controlled leak to avoid a shitstorm when they announce it, if everyone already knows then it's fine. Especially considering how much they downplayed the price announcement, it was mentioned then skipped immediately.

Yeah, his heads up on PS4 used games DRM was remarkable journalism.

What obligation does have have to MS's timetable?

That question makes absolutely no sense.

Do people get mad when new iPhone prices are leaked?

Hint: No because that's stupid.

Ridiculous analogy for numerous reasons.

This guy was working with MS in several venues even having them grace his platform with personnel including Spencer, and he overheard the rehearsals goes to Twitter in a rush to spill the beans undercutting them and you all don't see that as dickish or unprofessional? Who raised you people?

He likely damaged his relationship with them permanently as they no doubt do not trust him anymore.

It's not about "holding their water" as one poster wrote it's about mutual respect. He showed them none doing that.

And yes, I have a MC avatar other poster who thought to belittle me for using a favorite character of mine in his image. That doesn't change what I'm saying from being correct in any way though so kick rocks until you can actually discuss things like an adult.

I was on the side of feeling like this was some staged effort by Microsoft but I still had reserves that it was real. Either way, I did know that he wouldn't do this to sacrifice his reputation if he wasn't 100% sure.

Ding ding ding. Pretty smart of Microsoft.

I can't imagine what scenario you are picturing in your mind where Phil Spencer thought he could go up on stage to announce the price of the system with that showing at $499 and think people would be delightfully surprised.

It's not like he leaked specs which he probably already knew before even Eurogamer. It's a price of a piece of hardware.

People would be leaking the price of games software if games weren't always $60.

If say Activision were to start charging more for COD and Geoff leaked that, would you be mad too?

Me? It didn't.

But that doesn't really matter. He knew something and was under no obligation to keep it secret.

And what end did that serve ultimately? He didn't do that for us as the consumer so you'd have to think it was for himself to bolster insider knowledge, right?

Is that worth it for that? That's why it was so silly and dickish.

This thread is hard to read. I think it would be better if every poster prefaces their posts with their favorite console and a brief history of how they got into gaming. The context will help.

I actually would love to have the ability to have signatures with "I support [insert console]." I just think it would communication.

For what it's worth I own every console and I love them equally like my children. I started gaming in '84 and I don't see race or corporations. I support gameplay, visuals are like assholes everyone has one.

Some people just like spreading information. I know, I'm one of them.

How was the consumer hurt by this?

It's possible that the people at MS don't really mind the price getting revealed earlier.

Why are you so concerned with Geoff's relationship with microsoft? Who gives a shit, and most likely his relationship with them is FINE, no matter what the price was going to be revealed. Everyone caring about their relationship and talking about how its damaged is odd.

Geoff determined that reporting on this news outweighs whatever relationship he has with MS. You can disagree with that, but that was Geoff's decision to make. Whatever repercussions (if any) this reporting has between him and MS, I'm sure Geoff will come out of it just fine.

You're moving goalposts now. I said nothing about him taking away delight from Phil announcing anything, just that as a professional in the industry for years and a decently close relationship with MS, for Geoff to leak that a mere hour or two from the conference after hearing Phil rehearse it undercuts him in presenting it and was dickish tarnishing his relationship with MS for what amounts to nothing for him long term.

Why you and others are trying so hard to dance around that is beyond me. I'm not saying Geoff is an asshole or needs to lose his job or anything ridiculous like that, just that what he did wasn't cool as a supposed professional who by all accounts should've known better.

or like he weighed that there'd be no repercussions at all because rehearsal leak reporting happens every year and <0.01% of their audience knowing a number (one of three possible numbers) two hours before when microsoft said the number but five months before you could buy the thing isn't a thing that impacts anything

Hilarious that people care about the price being revealed ahead of time
Rethink everything if you are seriously perturbed in any way

The greatest part in all this outrage directed at Geoff is that...

1. It's still very likely that MS themselves had a part in this info getting out...MS had to know $499 would be a painful pill to swallow...this info getting out early only helps soften the blow and you don't get another PS3 sticker shock moment on stage...

2. MS probably doesn't give a shit about this...announcing a $499 price point is not a mic drop moment...if Geoff had come out and said..."holy shit guys, Scorpio is gonna launch at $349!" And MS had been saving that as their megaton to end the show with, then I'd understand people being pissed...

But overall $499 is a negative, its not a selling point to be "the most expensive mid gen refresh console ever" and Geoff getting it out there before hand does nothing but soften the blow

Hence the dickish behavior.

He got information he wasn't supposed to have, and he took the decision himself on what to do with it. It's pretty simple, really, if you understand what respect means.

It's possible that the people at MS don't really mind the price getting revealed earlier.

I bought into that theory of him working with them to leak it to soften the blow but after seeing Major Nelson and Greenberg on his YouTube show they didn't seem too pleased with him despite them trying to remain professional in representing the system.

IMO he might have done MS a favor here. Phil dropping $499 at the end of that conference without the leak could have overshadowed that entire showing. going in with that price in mind kind of lessened the blow by the time he actually said it.
