Phil Spencer: "Not a fan of marketing deals with exclusive content"

MS: Pioneers the exclusive content/timed dlc shit last gen with major third parties
Follows through to this gen
Sony does it aswell
Phil: continues to strike deals

Sony: starts striking deals with all the major third parties

Phil: hey guys timed exclusive content is bad HAhaa also buy our console launch excluisves soon where we hold full games instead of some content i cant pr btw HAhaa
😂
Come on I said that a big Part of this is because they cant get the big hitters anymore. Of course this is PR speech but that wouldnt stop them to get stuff with mordor, ac or Anthem. Because of that I said they deserve shit if they go backwards on this. I never said they are the good ones, the tomb raider deal was shit, Fifa was shit. But if they truely changed their minds and they dont do this stuff with games they get , this is a good thing for everyone.

I'm starting to really dislike Phil. I not much of a fan of marketing deals either, but this constant holier than thou PR spin he gives off is really eyeroll worthy. Give it a rest already, sell your console on its own merits without constantly taking potshots at the competition. It's the same with the 6>4 t-shirts and the like, it might work on diehard MS fanboys but it's cringeworthy to anyone else.

I'd rather have marketing deals than miss out on entire games for a year. And the whole Xbox conference was just 'Console launch exclusive' so this rings a bit hollow.

To be fair I think he is referring to content that NEVER reaches another platform like the PS4 Destiny strike, not so much timed stuff.

Don't get me wrong, both are dumb as shit but the former is the worst kind IMO.

I thought the same and ofcourse it's worse if something stays on one platform only rather than releasing it later for others. I don't understand how anyone could argue otherwise while being honest.

"I'm just really not a fan of marketing deals with exclusive content that we get outbid on. This was a lot more fun when we were the only ones doing it."

Come on, Phil. I liked you!

You can't say this shit after intentionally confusing people with timed exclusives less than two days ago.

I wont defend Phil if hes spouting what I believe to be horseshit (see: constant promises to revitalize first party) but theres three games people are bringing up here:

-Fifa
-The Division
-Rise of the Tomb Raider

Deals that could have started way before his tenure, the Fifa one definitely did

There is a degree of hypocrisy considering how he's benefited though

So even up to 2016, people are still finding ways to lay the blame on Matrick.

Never liked Phil. He was always to me that weird uncle that tries to be cool.

I really miss Don Mattrick.

The 360 comment was stupid but at least he was honest.

Also with him there were games. Phil reduces the size of their lineup with every year.

What if Phil was never the savior to begin with and instead we helped palpatine rise to power?

I'm wondering where are all those "I believe in Phil Spencer" bagdes now.

He doesn't do those deals, because they would cost a whole lot more sitting at second place.

The problem is, this kind of garbage works.

I would prefer to play Destiny 2 on Scorpio over PS4 Pro. I have been wanting to move back to Xbox love ecosystem since the advent of Scorpio.

But I also want the most complete version of Destiny 2. An extra Strike, extra exotic weapon, extra skins is enough to make me choose that version (the PS4 version) over any version that doesn't include those things. Unless Scorpio delivers 60fps multiplayer (won't happen) or significantly better graphics/performance (maybe, but we won't know probably til launch, by which point I'd already be playing it on Pro for 2 months) its hard for multi-console gamers to choose anything besides PS4 as their Destiny 2 platform.

It's kind of dirty pool, but MS has played this game too so they're not all innocent in this.

Correct like the FIFA exclusive content deal Xbox did not continue and renew under the leadership of Phil Spencer ;)

Yeah because it mostly likely not worth the asking price or they could not get it .
EA also could say to them self they losing to much money with it not being on PS4 and said they not doing it any more.

So he's okay with timed exclusives on full game releases but not timed releases on piecemeal content?

This reeks of hypocrisy.

I rarely get on Phil, but yeah, he's full of crap on this one. Destiny deal sucks, but so does a conference full of timed exclusives.

But paying to keep games off another platform for limited time is ok, right Phil?

Not saying the Destiny situation is ok, because it's not, but this is typical Phil speaking from both sides of his mouth.

Exactly this. He needs to stop the bullshit too before trying to spew words of wisdom.

Whether it be keeping games of platform for a specified time or marketing deals for exclusive content, both directions are trash for gamers.

The Fifa FUT legends stuff never came to PS4.

It will do this year because Sony have the marketing, but from what I gather, it won't be locked out on Xbox.

That was a huge deal for Fifa fans I gather.

So, Pot, kettle black, Phillip.

So even up to 2016, people are still finding ways to lay the blame on Matrick.

Yep, Phil stans always have Matrick to try and throw under the bus. Phil has been general manager of Microsoft Studios, and corporate vice president since 2008, but he didn't have anything to do with anything.

its a bad practice but phil talks so much shit. i bought the division with season pass and didn't play the expansions that had timed exclusivity on xbox because by the time they were available to me i had lost interest and then there's fifa

they have been doing this for eons

"console launch exclusive"

lmao

How should I know? Can you give me NDA contracts about it?

How long do you think Phil Spencer has been a key player in Xbox leadership for?

Absolutely, hes absolutely benefitted from these deals and theres absolutely a degree of hypocrisy. But theres some games being cited where third parties were negotiating before their public unveiling

The Division debuted at E3 2013, its erroneous to immediately imply that Phil Spencer signed those deals, you can definitely make jabs at the fact hes advertised them happily, you can make jabs at all the timed exclusivity, but this one is problematic

So even up to 2016, people are still finding ways to lay the blame on Matrick.

Marketing deals arent announced on the exact same day theyre made lmao

So even up to 2016, people are still finding ways to lay the blame on Matrick.

In 2020 everything will still be Matricks fault. He laid the foundations, they couldn't recover.

The marketing deals that were set in stone.
The studio closures.
The cancelled games.
The lack of innovation.
The sales underperformance.

It's all Matrick's fault. I don't know how the guy sleeps at night.

lol this guy. My God, I guess he immediately knew the mistake he made.

Not only last gen with CoD and other Exclusive content but now with timed exclusive FULL games! Hello Tomb Raider and the 22 this week.

So having exclusive levels is bad but having FULL exclusive games is cool!

ok pal. I mean, I am not complaining that Xbox has exclusives but don't say stuff like that at the same time, it's embarrassing for you.

Think you're missing his point, from what I make of it, he doesn't like it when developers release content which will only appear on one platform and anyone else on the other platforms can never access it, this is different to things like timed exclusives/timed dlc, because in those instances, the other platform holders will still get the content, just later on.

Which is fine, it gives a reason to get it first on xbox but those that are already tied to a platform will ultimately still get the content

They havent changed cause they still have and had these deals until recently and you can bet they would continue if they could.

No ones denying the deals are bad for consumers but coming out of spencer like woah dude do you know what you and the company has been doing and signing for 2gens now

"console launch exclusive"

Yeah that 42 exclusive games shit they pulled was something else.....

How much of those shown were really full exclusive? 10?

That label is just so dumb either gain full exclusivity or don't. The shitty 1 month/year later crap needs to stop.

Sony has it too tho so both are kinda doing this launch exclusive situation.

So there was no budget for stuff like that this year eh?

Yeah that 42 exclusive games shit they pulled was something else.....

How much of those shown were really full exclusive? 10?

That label is just so dumb either gain full exclusivity or don't. The shitty 1 month/year later crap needs to stop.

waay less.

Well that is certainly one way of throwing stones in a glass house. The guy and company that wants to lock everything to w10, have 20 or something "launch exclusives" and held back tomb raider one year.

Fuck I am tired of this snake salesman.

So Division? Dude is still full of shit with "Console Launch Exclusive" ;)

That deal?
Likely made in 2012 or even earlier.
You know when the game was first shown and releaed, right?

people who call Phil "full of shit" are more like what they accuse him of ;)

Yeah because it mostly likely not worth the asking price or they could not get it . EA also could say to them self they losing to much money with it not being on PS4 and said they not doing it any more.

What is this?
EA does not make a single $ more or less in sales because the marketing deal is now with Sony

This does not make any sense at all.
But yeah TakeTwo lost millioms, because the marketing deal was with Ps3 and not Xb360.

And now Ubisoft is losing millions, because most of their big games have or had marketing deals with Xbox One and not Ps4

Rofl

This is where journalists illustrate their incompetence as well. Instead of following that up by illustrating instances where Microsoft instigated the very thing he's purportedly not a fan of, the journalist just moves on.

Most game "journalists" are just extended PR for publishers and would therefore avoid hard hitting questions that can damage their buddy buddy relations with the industry.

Not a fan when it's not on your console you mean, Phil.

But I agree, holding content from gamers just because they own a different box sucks.

XBOX sure loved getting maps early on cod back in the day.
