Spencer: We Have Just Signed Exclusives That Won’t Be Ready for 2-3 Years, No Point i

Guys a third party exclusive is funding an IP they don't own, First party is funding a Ip they own if it be from a studio they own or not. Halo is just as much a first party title as State of Decay (Independent), a third party title would be Dead Rising or Tomb Raider. When Phil mentions signing games he is talking about a Crackdown, a Ori or a State of Decay, in these situations the Publisher (MS) would as part of the contract claim ownership of the Ip. In fact Spencer has made it abundantly clear that they are not funding games were they don't claim ownership of the IP, this is in conjunction with him stating that he doesn't want to do third party exclusives going further.

I respect not showing games 2-3 years out. This is a marketing/platform decision that I'm OK with; although personally like to see games early as just knowing they exist makes me excited!

But Phil using this as a justification for not showing more new IP this year indicates by default that they didn't start making any other new IP last year or the year before that.

It stands to reason that if they had been working on big new IP then they would have shown us those games! You know the ones you started in 2015 and 2016? Show those!

If on the other hand they haven't had them in the oven for a while, and they are just now reinvesting in new IP and big games, then X-Box gamers are in for a long Exclusive drought (at least relative to Sony and Nintendo players).

What was even the need for upgrade to X this year??

Switch shows the selling power of strong 1st party games.

Should have just concentrated on S and used the money to get more games made. Would help with their next Xbox. But these people are ignorant

This kind of buried the lead:

If the stuff not shown is 2-3 years out, how's 2018-2019 looking, then?

Forza Horizon 4
Halo 6
Halo spinoff
Gears of War 2 Remaster/remake
Gears of War 5
Fuzion Frenzy Returns
Fable something

*sigh*

I started this list by just fucking around, but it seems very likely now haha.

No need your "help" since there is actual list posted here, thanks.

Presumable 2018 would be at the minimum.

- Sea of thieves
- State of decay 2
- Ori 2
- halo 6
- Forza Horizon 4

A pretty good year

His main goals?
When he took over yes. Back then Ms output with 1st time was kicking ass. And when he made that decision probably wasn't counting that many of the studios and games would collapse.

Edit: When he took over the only problem people saw on the xbone lineup was how it was focused on AAA games, and was lacking on the indie front compared to ps4.

He did a great job there and now it seems he even turned the balance. If all the studios and their games turned out actually releasing they would be in a damn fine position right now.

(Imagine Sot, Scalebound, Crackdown 3 already released as intended, at least 2 new games from Press play/Twisted Pixel each)

In some ways in glad they didn't announce games that are three years out because I would be afraid that it might get cancelled (I understand that this might not be reasonable). However, more announcements might have convinced me to purchase the XboneX.

So you don't have shit for this year or next year, but you want us to buy a $500 box in November because it's then most powerful console ever?

You know what else was the most powerful console ever? PS4 Pro. The most powerful before that? PS4. And no one would have bought those either if they didn't have games.

I thought their E3 sucked because they want us to buy a $500 box for Forza, and Crackdown 3 plus Sea of Thieves obviously don't look good enough for that purchase. So I decided not to buy a Scorpio after all. Now you tell us you have nothing coming for 2-3 years? Wow.

Excuse me? They didn't collapse, they were collapsed, by him.

Phil Spencer isn't some bystander here. He owns MS's first party situation.

He didn't say that, he said it's not point announcing titles that are 3 years away. No mention of other deals.

People did buy PS4 for the best version of 3rd party games, you can dig up lots of old threads using this as a reason.

The point is that Switch is not 3DS, so get ready for delays or early announcements, especially for big titles. Nintendo is not different, we saw that already with Zelda and Xenoblade Chronicles X.

I never claimed they were different regarding early reveals and I've made that point known many times on NeoGAF.

But Metroid needed an early announcement. It's one of the few times I've fully supported this practice.

I'm literally buying the Xbox One X because it will be the best console for third party. The vast majority of games I play are third party games.

I personally know several people who bought a PS4 at launch because it was more powerful who are now getting an Xbox One X. It's basic human behaviour to want to get the best experience of something. I made decisions between 360 and PS3 for some games based on digital foundry and other reports of quality.

I felt a little sad reading some of those tweets, poor guys.

Xbox gamers just don't like Japanese games period. Well some do, but those people should have switch to PS4 long time ago as Japanese games sell like shit on xbox and that's why no support. You might get some more popular games like Final Fantasy or Dark Souls but you won't find many niche Japanese games on xbox.

good, that means they are learning things

O yeah, they've learned really well how to keep the water muddy so you can't see how many fish they have, you might get some when the water clears but you can also find yourself alone in that pond.

Microsoft is in a weird place where they put out a decent amount of first party games every year while simultaneously catching heat for not having first party games.

I guess they need a mega smash. They've had at least 1 or 2 good to even great games every year for the whole generation but they haven't had a 90+ metacritic 5 stars! a new era of gaming! smash hit.

Eh, the way it was done was pretty dumb. If they'd announced Samus Returns in the Direct and then immediately followed it up by the Metroid Prime 4 announcement, it would've been fine. But just having the logo reveal (with Samus Returns announced an hour later) was weak, even a CG trailer's better than that.

Still worlds better than the Pokemon announcement though, that was some EA shit.

Anyway, I'm sure Microsoft have more games in the works but I don't believe for a second they're suddenly going to be releasing the same number of games they were around 2013/14. I think the current 4-5 games a year is here to stay, which is pretty weak for a first party but I don't think Microsoft's giving them the budget to deliver much more than that.

What does sign exclusives mean? Sounds like sports talk.

Oh I thought this guy didn't like exclusivity agreements though...or did Microsoft pull some new first party studios out if their proverbial hat?

It means signing contracts for the development of first party games with external studios.

Are we sure Spencer didn't say this because Sony said something similar? Signing exclusive deals doesn't mean shit if there's a risk of them getting delayed and cancelled *coughScaleboundcough*.

Now when he says "exclusive" does he mean actual exclusive or something along the lines of "console launch exclusive".

These signings are basically... in my mind... jade empire, mass effect, sunset overdrive type of games

3rd party developed, first party published

So instead of showing a teaser of the games that are 2-3 years away, he's saying we have games in development that are 2-3 years away, but we aren't going to let you know anything about it until 2-3 years from now. Trust me!!!

Sound about right?

I'm not sure how he is going to do this. Games can't pop out of nowhere, they take time and money, something Phil does not really have. I say this because he has not invested in new studios, he has shut down Lionhead, canceled Scalebound, and denounced 343, The Coalition, Turn 10/Playground to make the same games for a decade. He does not have the money to buy third-party exclusives, to form new studios and is increasingly relying on games as a service in order to increase profits. If these new exclusives are set to come out in 2-3 years, they will be on the next Xbox system, as what happened at the end of the 360 era.

I have given this man plenty of chances, I bought Xbox One Day One, and I feel that he has done nothing, but disappointed me every single year since he took over.

This.

He's only had over a decade, but don't worry he's got an exclusive or two signed (probably existing projects from third parties since games don't just materialize from nowhere) for 2019-2020 and that's supposed to be impressive despite having so many fewer titles in the pipeline for years unlike Sony's first parties.
