Not gonna deny a lot of people like that aspect of it, but let's not also pretend people don't know the series is just as silly. Buu's super popular for a childish gum demon that turns people into candy lol.
Beerus is a humorous, endearing character that's obsessed over food who also can destroy a planet if he gets serious. That's also Dragon Ball to a lot of people, and that's why he's really popular, even outside the fandom. (At least, from my anecdotal experience lol)

While I do think that the base roster will mostly be Z, I'd imagine that the likes of Beerus, Hit, & Goku Black have a pretty good chance of making the base roster.
I'm sure that's the kind of end goal that Bamco and Arc alike would love to see. I'd be all for it if Bamco was willing to shell out some dough for some fan events, as well as insuring its esports presence.
Being silly doesn't negate the more " trying to take its self serious" parts from existing, in fact I would say they make you appreciate each other.
Its why I like the new day and dust rhodes. It makes me appropriate when cool shit happens. I like both those elements, but I feel like it comes back to big dudes cutting promo's and telling eachother " they are strongest there is"
It also helps that the last episode of dragonball super is literally just that, and the folks from the green lantern universe even had lights and colored smoke

What you desribed, is a generic shonen protagonist, almost every generic shonen protagonist as " guy who's kind of funny who can eat and when he gets serious he gets cool" . That isn't unique for. If that , what DB, DBZ, super whatever is to you, that's fine.
For me it was always about this bombastic characters, varying in personality in wild crazy outfits, every sentence coming out of their mouth sounding like they are cutting a promo, having these crazy fights that didn't need to happen with jumps in logic, but due to the charisma of the characters, they sold me on. I put my hands up as a kid watching goku, cheered on vegeta when he turned super saiyan. I was boo-ed every time general blue came on screen. They were these larger than life wrestler guys for me. Even back in dragon ball.
That's how I see dragonball, and that's why I love it. You can feel free to love it for different reasons, that's totally fine. DB isn't the only one too, its why I like fist of north star, its why I like bobobo for breaking down fist of the north star into just being basically that. Glorified wrestler, for me is a giant compliment. Because I love wrestling, and I love DB.

With Golden Frieza and the space stage, Beerus is pretty much a lock really. That, and he's basically the perfect final boss for this. Though a part of me is actually hoping Black and/or Merged Zamasu fill that role.

For me at least, it's because I expect this roster to be very limited, and I could easily see them go with Beerus and call it a day. Also, there are other characters from Super I would personally rather have (Hit or Goku Black). Whis is still awesome though, one of my favorite characters.
