Its not the best side content the series got, but its still better than the completion list for Ishin, that was just ghastly to complete - put 100 dogs, collect 100 eggs etc. it was a nightmare of tedium (Amon's sword totally rocked though!)

Fuck - maybe I'll pick this up tomorrow. I've found one reason or another to ignore this series for so long - but it has always called to me. I love crazy Japanese games that blend realism with the fantastical.
I Just started yesterday an am around the same spot(Chapter 5) and am also loving it. I always wanted to check out the series and the prequel seemed like a good time to give it a look.

Why is it just now that people in the West are all over Yakuza? I can only guess it has something to do with this release's timing along with the health of the PS4.

I've played 2 through 4, never got to 5, and am now playing 0. It's awesome to see other people get into it with 0 though. I'd say this is one of the best ones though, for sure.

Social media seems to have had a hand in it, at least with a few people I follow it seemed to get some spotlight while previous games in the franchise were never mentioned. Pretty sure it being a prequel helped slightly as well since it makes a more suitable jump in point for many people.
It's just this forum. Neogaf isn't representative of mainstream gaming. Just take a look at Steam stats and see what's really popular, here I'll do it for you - top 5 are Dota 2, Counterstrike, PUBG, PayDay 2, H1Z1 and then its GTA V, Ark, Civ V. None of those besides GTA V get talked about much here.
Yakuza 0 sales in the west are 'niche'.
Some fans also think it wasn't helped by having ONLY an english localication in europe either, where a lot of games have at least four or five different languages.
Yakuza 3 came out with a lot of bad press when content was cut out making its 'fans' mad, if its fans were upset, I doubt others would buy it. Sales numbers for Y3 meant it also hurt Y4 when it came time for retailers to set order numbers. Dead Souls probably killed the franchise for a while in the west. Yakuza fans got lucky when Sega decided to try again with Y0, Y:Kiwami and Y6 and I'm guessing as a result they also decided to do Y5 but just digitally (again pissing off physical buyers!).
Why not give it a shot? With that mind set, I think you'll find there's a lot to like in the game.

I've had my eyes on the franchise since 2 but only got into it with 4...years after it's western release.
The first game I admit, just completly went past me, never heard of it when it came out. The second game did catch my attention but then I wanted to play the first game first, and it kinda annoyed me that the first game was english dubbed while the second was subbed, so I didn't bother in the end.
Then 3 came, and I was determined to finally get into the series...until, like you said, they decided to cut a bunch of quests and other side content from it's western localization. Even to this day, now that I'm into the series, I don't want to touch the game in it's current state.
Then Sega made it's biggest mistake...they released HD ports of 1 and 2 for the PS3 in Japan and I thought "Great, I can finally get into the series now once they come out in the west!", because the translations were already done and I thought releasing them over here was a no-brainer.
...but they never did. Huge missed opportunity.
When 4 came out over here I had faint interested but ultimately felt it was too late for me.
It's only thanks to Binary Domain that I still gave the series a chance, loved the game, learned that it was by the Yakuza development team which made me decide to fuck it and just get Yakuza 4 already. It was instant love, even if I never finished the game due to pacing issues with the character switching.
Well 3 is still a really good game and if you just play it for the story, you wouldn't really know what you were missing. That said if you go looking for it, I seem to recall it was a bit jarring that the hostess content is missing, but that is a side activity anyway and you can always play it in Yakuza 4. The second half of Yakuza 3 is really good and worth playing.
The Sega that never released Y1&2 HD over in the West was the bad Sega that made lots of shitty executive decisions at the time (including stacks of shitty Sonic games). Somehow the tide has turned and we're getting a decent Sega at the moment that's decided to localize all these Yakuza games.

absolutely, i was already floored by that point but then that goes down and just helped seal GOTY for me. what's really great as a fan of the series is seeing this vulnerable side of Kiryu that even when threatened in later games (orphanage, etc) you don't feel as much

A shame if what say about Yakuza 3 is true. It was my first Yakuza game and whilst I knew some elements of the original release were cut for the west, I bought it anyway. I'm glad I did because the brilliant combat and wholly unexpected stories made for a very unique experience and so Y3 ended up being one of my all time favourite games.
Hoooooooohohohohoho. The story just keeps getting better and they keep adding in extra mini-games that are very engrossing. Was a really good design choice to have 2 protagonists and swap back and forth on cliffhangers. I want to keep advancing the story but I need to build up my real estate and cabaret club.
My first ever Yakuza game and I don't feel left out at all. This seems to be a well explained story even if there is some stuff I would recognize if I were a veteran of the series. Having a blast. I do think it does start off a little slow and combat feels a bit wonky at first but that quickly remedies itself.

It's a perfect entry point. It's a prequel that works really well as it can function either as a great addition to the series for people who already enjoyed it, or as an introduction for newcomers. You don't have to know anything at all about the series to play this game.
Someone mentioned that Kiwami, the remake of the first game that comes out in less than two months, works better when you've played Zero as they've added stuff that ties into Zero.

What chapter you up to?
I played Y1 & 2 when they original came out and the series quickly became one of my favourites. I turned to PC gaming last gen, though, so I only got around to playing Y3 last year and to be honest, I thought it was kind of weak compared to the first couple of games. I took another break and now I'm finally playing Y4, which is excellent so far.
I decided to play on Easy because, while I enjoy the combat, it always drags by the end, and what I'm actually there for is the story.

To me it was always the timing of the releases and not wanting to spend money on something that was already outdated. Yakuza 4 comes out, but 5 is almost out in Japan... Maybe I'll wait for 5. 5 comes out, but the PS4 is already out, why would I want to spend $60 on a PS3 game? Yakuza 0 just ended up being a great intro to the series, had a direct follow-up coming with a budget price, and was a great game on top of it all.

It's a prequel that, to me, doesn't really feel like a prequel. Though I haven't played the other Yakuza games, I don't feel that invisible hand of inevitability that many prequels have. Instead, I'm super curious about all of the relationships and I have no idea how anything will play out.
So yea, go get it.

There's an item called Trouble Finder that you can use to mark the start of unfinished substories on the map.
Here are the instructions on how to find it for each character.
For Kiryu, you need to complete
"The Tax Lady" substory in chapter 5
For Majima, you need to
complete friendship with the Komian's Chef.

Stick till the end of chapter 6. If it's still too slow for you, then you're probably not gonna like it tbh. The pace of the story picks up considerably in the last 5-6 chapters for whatever it's worth.

Beast style and Heat moves in general really take what is already a pretty great brawling system and makes it feel so much more epic and satisfying. The environment isn't just the walls of an arena or random decoration; it's for you to bash, smash, crack, slam your enemies against and around with it. It gives the combat a scrappy "no rules in a street fight" feel.
Man this thread has really made me question what my next big game will be. I played a couple hours of BotW to test emulation and it runs fine and was thinking of starting that after Persona 5, but now I'm thinking Yakuza 0 might be the thing that takes it's place.

Persona 5 is also a *much* longer time commitment, around 80 to 100 hours on average, so unless you absolutely only need 1 game for the summer, get this.
that thread subtitle is really fitting for this game. Still my GotY and one of the if not the best videogame story I have ever played. The presentation is unreal. Played the game for 16 hours or so normally, and then went on a 14-hour binge to complete the story without distraction, no regrets. Can't wait for Kiwami.
Nah, even outside of GAF I'm hearing more chatter about Yakuza 0 than I've ever heard about the franchise before -- on podcasts, on YouTube, etc. Lots of people trying it out who've never played Yakuza before. It's not mainstream but it definitely seems to have caught on more than the series has in the past.
