This would be a property where they actually shouldn't for most of the cast. There are pirates based on real people that were definitely not of Asian descent.

Luffy and his crew aren't based on real pirates so there's no reason they can't be Asian.

And it's not like One Piece is some historical record of pirates anyway.

The characters in Jojo's Bizarre Adventure aren't Japanese (with exceptions).
You can write a story featuring characters that aren't your own nationality.

There's not really an Asia in the One Piece world. There's like, one canon island that is purely Japanese Samurai land. Some people have japanese names, some don't. It's a diverse world though, so if it's all fucking white we got problem

Yeah of all the shounen to adapt, naruto would be at the bottom of the list, with bleach and dragon ball following behind. The style of those worlds just wouldn't work IRL, methinks.

Same goes for one piece, the style is just too wacky to work IRL.
