What is the deal with awful people online and anime avatars?

During the final months of WWII, Germany asked Japan to create a weapon which would lead to the indoctrination of people young and old into Nazi sleeper agents. And that's how anime came to be.

Just maga avatars with an n.

This explains the Nazi paraphernalia fetish. You and OP are onto something

Suddenly a Saiyan's "Super" form being blonde hair and blue eyes just made a lot of sense...

This. Places like 4chan that rejected moderation turned into cess-pits that were co-opted by extremists into recruiting grounds. Also, confirmation bias. I don't think the alt-right is related to anime specifically ao much as nerd culture in general. Videogaming, anime, tabletop gaming, comics, fantasy and popular movie/television fandoms have all produced alt-right types.

I will say, as self described fanthropologist, I have yet to see a major television fandom produce alt rights. Assholes and crazy as fuck people, yes. Alt right, no.

Jojo did sort of downplay the badness of the Nazis by having part II be set before World War II started, and setting the Nazis against vampires as reluctant allies, but Japan's blindspot regarding WWII is huge, even for Japanese who aren't trying to be apologist shitheads.

I am just going to guess that's it's comparable to how most people don't even know how bad Imperialistic Japan was during WW2.

Shit, does this mean I can't like anime anymore if I'm a liberal?

Anyways, I guess I've noticed it in some cases, but I've also seen jerks with a lot of game avatars too. I think we just have to face the fact that creepers like a lot of the same media we do. You'd have to disassociate yourself with all modern culture if you want to avoid stuff that they like too.

Unless you're implying that Evangelion is turning people into Nazis, in which case I flat out disagree.

No, actually, more liberal anime fans need to get active in the anime fandom and start squashing the alt right actually. Go forth to the front lines!

Some of ya'll are judgemental as hell. Anyway, personally I just think that it's such a large medium that there's going to be many of those types drawn to it. Like anything really. I've met my fair share of dudes who would more than likely gladly identify themselves as alt-right and would probably agree to things that I myself would hate, and every single one of them has at least 2 out of 3 things in common, if not all 3. which would be that they like anime, video games, and they're socially awkward in some sort of way (oh hey neogaf).

Obviously none of those things are really bad, but it is something that I've noticed with a lot of awful people. That being said, I've also met a ton who would never like any of those things. So I just go on a person by person basis, because if you start immediately judging somebody because of an avatar and not by what they say, then in a way, you're not exactly the best person yourself.

Yes I am an anime fan.

Edit: this thread topic must come up like once every 2 months on here.

As someone who wrote a really annoying paper for a group project on 4chan, and had to spend a lot of time on /pol/ to learn about them, the people who say there is no connection between the alt-right and anime are kidding themselves.

These guys love anime, they envy Japan's cultural homogeny, and there is strong Asian fetishism because of the stereotypes of the perfectly submissive Asian wife. There are regular debates about whether miscegenation is okay if it's white man and Asian woman.

I think they want the idealistic stylized reality, where the girls fit into neat little perverted boxes catering to some loser protagonist. Waifus are abound.

They combine anime with their ideals frequently in memes.

Do I think anyone with an anime avatar is likely to be alt right? No, of course not.

But the alt right DO love anime and they are proud of it.

There is nothing wrong with anime at all and there is nothing wrong with having an anime avatar

But if you don't think that internet Nazis fucking love anime avatars you are deluding yourself

Honestly there's a lot of confirmation bias to it.

I'd say the real connection are profile pics that aren't pictures of yourself.

To grossly generalise, people on social media whose pictures aren't of themselves either lack suitable pictures due to being anti-social, or just lack the confidence in themselves to put their own face on their profile.

These kinds of people are easily swayed by the alt-right.

There is no deal or correlation. They probably just use those avatars to bug people which is like 90% of internet discourse. Pay it no mind.

All it does is entrench you in false biases that fudge up the real picture.

Yeah, there must be a correlation between anime and the people who use it in their avatars when it comes to the worst aspects of humanity.

People who say you can find this in all nerdy fandoms, how do you explain this:

Checkmate anime
There are alt-right Sonic fans and furries. That last one being one of the more puzzling combinations.

I know people really buy into the "Asian fetishism" angle and while I don't deny that it exists, I feel social factors play a bigger part, because what part of "Asian fetishism" explains Nazifurs?

The sad truth is there is massive overlap between anime fans and alt-right losers. Both are generally socially awkward, frustrated young men who want to blame their problems on the nebulous "SJWs" that dislike the misogyny that goes on in a lot of anime shows.

in a nutshell

I agree with your post, ESPECIALLY the part in bold.

Holo wearing a MAGA hat makes me want to puke.

That Gerstmann gif needs to die.

Jeff is complete doo-doo.

Nah, Jeff rules and that gif will live forever.

How you choose to visually represent yourself obviously says something about you. It shouldn't be surprising that guys that secretly want to fuck 8 year old cartoon girls are anti-social and terrible.

Uh excuse me, that 8 year old girl is actually a 20,000 year old ancient demon sorceress, so it's totally different and not creepy.

APOLOGY ACCEPTED
