What is the deal with awful people online and anime avatars?

There are alt-right Sonic fans and Furries. That last one being one of the more puzzling combinations.

I know people really buy into the "Asian fetishism" angle and while I don't deny that it exists, I feel social factors play a bigger part, because what part of "Asian fetishism" explains Nazifurs?
I know someone like this and it feels like there's a lot of cognitive dissonance involved. The person is way more sympathetic to people judging furries than discrimination against Muslims and trans people. The basics of in and out groups apply I guess.

The sad truth is there is massive overlap between anime fans and alt-right losers. Both are generally socially awkward, frustrated young men who want to blame their problems on the nebulous "SJWs" that dislike the misogyny that goes on in a lot of anime shows.

You only notice it when it fits your definition. Plenty of assholes out there who don't have anime avatars and plenty of people with anime avatars that are cool folks.

These two posts are both correct. Not all alt-righters like anime, nor are all anime fans deplorable, but there is some awkwardly visibly overlap. And those avatars usually depict moe characters, I've noticed.

I have been called bad before. Many have said I do things that are not correct to do. I don't believe in talk such as this. I am nice man, with happy feelings. all of the time

Are you a great magician?

Holo wearing a MAGA hat makes me want to puke.
'tis a damn shame...
I don't watch much anime anymore, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a fan.
Anime isn't a genre though, so classifying all of it as Ecchi misogynist bullshit is harshly unfair to those folks of sound mind that enjoy all the series that include none of that content.

As someone who wrote a really annoying paper for a group project on 4chan, and had to spend a lot of time on /pol/ to learn about them, the people who say there is no connection between the alt-right and anime are kidding themselves.

Hmm, I'm not sure that conducting your study using a website that was founded on imitation of Japanese culture is going to give you a uniform random sample.

If you had decided to do your research on hardees.com instead, you probably would have found an intriguing connection between the alt right and enjoyment of thickburgers.

Anime still tends to be pretty racist, sexist, transphobic... the list goes on. Not all of them obviously, but a good amount is still sadly very offensive. It's no surprise that many of the fans aren't much better. If you ever read discussions on discrimination on any anime-related websites or forums you're going to leave disappointed if you expect any reasonable discussion. Of course all types of fans produce awful people, but just saying.. I don't think the source material is really setting a good example considering.

There are so many Anime losers who grew up with moe and submissive harem shit that it doesn't surprise me. They think this is the way of life, and since their social skills are usually ass, no wonder this is their vent route. They want to change things to fit their broken way of life.

Way ahead of you. None of the sourced info was from 4chan. That was just for my knowledge and to make the paper better.

Also it was right after Trump won and I felt curious how the other side lived.

Anime pushes a lot of garbage tropes and ideas, so it's not surprising to see the overlap. Doesn't mean that one is the other or that all are like that, because hell, I like anime/manga and I'm sure loads of people are in a similar boat.

But that I have to be so picky with what I read and watch says it all to me. So much of it is utter gutter trash and it's easy to see why it attracts a certain subset of people.

Never have I felt so uncomfortable for liking anime. Oh well. Guess it comes with the hobby.

Yeah, you have to expect this. I'm super hating myself right now, and it's not the first time. After a while you'll eventually get used to the feeling
never entirely though.

It's weird that so many people on GAF seem down on anime, when this is an enthusiast forum. Oh well, if people generalize, nothing I can do other than not live up to their preconceived bias

Just embrace it like this guy:
Does it still apply if you already know that you are a shit person?
It'll make you feel better and possibly change what groups your tribal instincts associate yourself with.

Oh, I already do that. It still hurts when people insult me, or insult people who like the things I like, but I frame it as character building: either I can learn to not take criticism of my self personally, or I can die.

I like watching Chinese cartoons as much as the next guy, but I don't see the need to advertise it to everyone. Like, this is a group that can't go five minutes without jerking off over Light Yagami, a fucking serial killer; of course a large segment of them are dolts.

Socially awkward, socially isolated people tend to gravitate around the same niche communities. It's obviously not a 1:1 overlap because I've also seen pretty strong correlations between self identified gamers online with similarly malicious polical beliefs. Every other alt right loser whose YouTube profile I explore has dozens of gaming videos.

I just find it ironic that Trump and especially someone like Pence would want to put several of those people in jail if they had their way, so it's kind of a self-defeating little trend. The big boys of the political right, whether alt or traditional, seem far more likely to be offended by anime than to celebrate it. I really would want to see some social research done on this subject rather than just people throwing around anecdotes though.

PPG is canonically anime btw.

Guilt by association. Nothing is safe.

There are aspects of it that merit being down on, do not surprising really.

Totes. But I'm not down on the whole of gaming or comic books as a medium because of the sexism, racism, and misogyny present. GamerGate is by and far largely worse than most of what I've seen come out of a community, to the point of actively harassing female employees; or that DC editor that was harassed for having a milkshake

So are you down on those mediums as well?
