What is the deal with awful people online and anime avatars?

Man, some of you guy talk as if none of you were once socially awkward nerds =_=

There's a reason we all end up here instead of going outside right now and play in playgrounds.

I think that's because most here are adults and we'd get some REALLY strange looks

But I get what you mean. I feel most are facetious and don't actually care,
myself included

Somebody ought to make this guy into an avatar. Checks all of the boxes.

take the contents of that photo

and reverse everything about it

then everything will be OK

right?

Yeah theres an unfortunate correlation. Thought about switching avatars cause of it, but eh. Ippo is dope and this:
Don't stop wearing anime avatars because of alt-right assholes, guys.

Stop wearing anime avatars because anime is garbage. :V
minus the spoiler :P
There's a lot to sift through before you find good ones tho

Vile people and bots from 4chan have kind of flooded Twitter and YouTube with their garbage. Ruins it for everyone else, really. I mean, pretty much every teenage girl from Tumblr or DeviantArt has an anime avatar, but they probably aren't dropping the N-word.

This isn't Twitter or YouTube though. It's a gated, curated community that leans pretty hard left, as far as internet communities go. If you're browsing GAF and assume someone with an anime avatar is a racist or a pedophile, you're just being a tosser.

I hate people with anime avatars, they're all terrible; almost as bad as those gaming avatar losers, who are all a bunch of women-hating Gamer Gate-aligning Trump voters.

Because 4chan overlap. They all come from garbage anime people forget in a week anyways, you don't see Twitter trolls with Spike avatars

I feel like that connection was truer last year than it is today.

Now a days, I'm more likely to come across a Pepe avatar as a sign of alt-right douchebag.

I would like to believe that but there are some that are real assholes about it.

Is this just a secret way to shit on anime?

Secret? You can actively do it with no backlash.

Boy dat ain't right.

My guess is that it's a combination of this:

The sad truth is there is massive overlap between anime fans and alt-right losers. Both are generally socially awkward, frustrated young men who want to blame their problems on the nebulous "SJWs" that dislike the misogyny that goes on in a lot of anime shows.

And the fact that no one wants to be lowest on the nerd totem pole. There are a lot of really shitty anime fans, and also great people who are anime fans. But the shitty anime fans drags the niche down pretty low, and it creates a cycle where they bring themselves down because of the shitty fans, other "nerds" bring them further down because the "nerds" don't want their particular niche of choice to be worse than anime, and perceptive "non-nerds" bring anime yet further down because of the perceived correlation between anime and shitty people.

I have no idea if that makes any sense.

Edit: I'd like to add that while there are shitty anime fans in the world, I don't think ostracizing members that are already in your in-group based on more general trends elsewhere is necessarily appropriate. Most people (who frequently post) on GAF seem pretty liberal, and that goes for a lot of the anime fans too. This is ultimately a nexus for nerds and until people out themselves as shitty, judging them based on a perceived correlation is rash and unnecessary. It's a complex issue and I think context is key. GAF is not forums elsewhere, or whatever.

Socially awkward nerds are not the problem, social awkwardness is just one facet of vulnerability that often leads people to radical/extreme and hateful ideologies. There's gonna be a bit of correlation there that people notice.

I knew I was a bad person.

But I never realized I was that bad. :(

On behalf of all anime avatar people, I apologise for the crap we have put the world through.

I feel like it's because the people that were targeted when the initial recruitment by gamergate etc. happened to like anime. Much like video games, they attract a certain type of person that is susceptible to manipulation due to being insecure about themselves. Wouldn't be surprised they used anime avatars as an attempt to seem like they are "like them" and make them trust them more. It's definitely a specific type of anime though not anime in general. Usually the type that depicts women as submissive.

Yeah but there is some mighty hypocrisy when socially awkward nerds gang up on other socially awkward nerds for liking different nerdy things.

My anime avatar is fucking great and I make absolutely no apologies for it

Nana is a great manga. As for your point, I concur.

It's undeniable that nazis have hijacked elements of anime as a way to project their propaganda. As an old anime fan, it's quite sad.

Not to say "them too" but, I seen some people with Pony avatars be a hell of lot worse with this stuff.
Seriously though, if you're an anime fan, it's probably unhealthy to internalize a lot of the bad stereotypes about anime fans.

For me, when I have an anime avatar (this one is stylized as such) it's just an avatar that I like. I don't act like the character or whatever.

Anime is poison, when taken occasionally it can be fine, but eventually with repeated exposure it begins slowly corrupting the mind, warping one's sense of normality and reality. When you think of themes, events and focus of most popular anime you can see the mind altering drug it contains. Ask yourself why so much incest, why so much sexualisation of young girls and of neotenic features, why the "isekai/ new life with cheat mode" genre is so popular.

Do not blind yourself to the truth that is in front of your eyes. Do not make excuses. Truly see what you are doing to yourself by consuming such media and stop before it is too late.

It would be pretty interesting to see someone on GAF roleplay as their own avatar.

They would probably get banned though...

Most popular anime? What.
