What is the deal with awful people online and anime avatars?

There's lot of overlap between people interested in anime and alt-right ideals. Lot of anime has some very creepy tones to it, and so does alt-right.

However, that doesn't mean that all anime is like that, and that not all anime avatar users like those aspects of the medium, or that all anime avatar users are alt-right.

Anime is poison, when taken occasionally it can be fine, but eventually with repeated exposure it begins slowly corrupting the mind, warping one's sense of normality and reality. When you think of themes, events and focus of most popular anime you can see the mind altering drug it contains. Ask yourself why so much incest, why so much sexualisation of young girls and of neotenic features, why the "isekai/ new life with cheat mode" genre is so popular.

Do not blind yourself to the truth that is in front of your eyes. Do not make excuses. Truly see what you are doing to yourself by consuming such media and stop before it is too late.

In case anyone is wondering what this means like I was, I googled it:

Neoteny is the retention, by adults in a species, of traits previously seen only in juveniles (pedomorphosis/paedomorphosis), and is a subject studied in the field of developmental biology.

https://www.sciencedaily.com/terms/neoteny.htm

Excellent vocabulary :-)

It would be pretty interesting to see someone on GAF roleplay as their own avatar.

They would probably get banned though...

Roleplaying as a dude as Marie or Callie....
Lol if i was a girl i would try it tho.

Guess i should get a cosplayer as a gf next time.

I can separate merits of artistic works from their creator's shitty views

I can also separate shitty fan bases from the works of art they love.

I will say from the little anime I have seen, there's a weird quality to the way girls are often depicted that kind of creeps me out. There's a common trope of girls as idealized, unspoiled virgins who become near-catatonic at any semblance of attraction or romance.

These "anime fans" putting MAGA hats on their favorite characters are disrespecting the creators of those works more than anything. Think Isuna Hasekura or ZUN would approve of these people using Holo from Spice and Wolf or any number of the touhous to spew hateful rhetoric? These people are the worst.

Yeah. Even back in middle school, I didn't like romance manga/anime with characters like that.

Lol user name checks out.

Not to say "them too" but, I seen some people with Pony avatars be a hell of lot worse with this stuff.

For me, when I have an anime avatar (this one is stylized as such) it's just an avatar that I like. I don't act like the character or whatever.
I don't mean role playing. I'm no expert but I think that the self-deprecating attitude that you find with a lot of anime fans is an unhealthy coping mechanism and it's not surprising that people turn to self-isolation and making ironic memes on the internet when they think that they're shitty people anyway.

Also there's this weird ironic apathy about it which I feel like this tweet kinda captures the essence of even if it's about something different: https://twitter.com/shaun_jen/status/895812406508748803

People think anime is some obscure interest / hobby, so when you are a try hard who wants to appear to be "not a normie" then you pretend to like anime. Next level of this is to tweet about "hentai" and how much you read fakku so people think you are whacky and have non-mainstream interests.

I saw a decent bit of crossplay at Otakon too. First time i went into a men's room i had to hesitate for a second because i saw someone in a skirt in the room and wondered if i had gone in the wrong side.

Also saw a dude crossplaying as Inkling Girl, but that's more likely because he couldn't find a headpiece in the Inkling Boy shape for sale.

I... Don't think that's the case...

Is it time to ask the hard question of whether anime should be banned on Neogaf

Oh, I'm Sorry, I Thought This Was America!

The right has propagated creative and beautiful symbols, stories and imagery since it's inception, every single facet of their iconography is a bastardisation of another person's - a well meaning person's - art. Those who put those hats on anime characters are the worst, just like those who tainted a once peaceful Hindi symbol.

Edit:

*anime gasp*

Nani!?

This is an important and frequently understated point. This phenomenon seeks to change meaning. Whether you believe in authorial intent or not, appropriation, modification, and propagation can add insidious new valences to previously-innocuous content. The truth is that removing new meaning and new context is harder than adding it.

Besides being a haven for the alt-right, 4chan is also a den of shitposting. I'm not sure I buy the concept of "containment boards". If someone spends a lot of time on a forum where racial/ethnic slurs, arguing in bad faith, trolling, and just garbage posting is the norm, they're going to bring those habits to other platforms of discussion.

The things you're talking about here are also a big part of why I love Mob Psycho 100 so much - it takes all of these things and just throws them into the garbage where they belong, telling a story about a boy growing up to take his place in society without being a toxic human being, despite having outrageous superpowers.

Sorry, I swear I'm not a shill or anything. Just the first thing that came to mind, heh.

Sadly, anime is one of those things that got ruined by idiots. Kinda like the undercut.

That, and anime is trash, and I say that as someone who likes anime.

Some anime fans are just assholes. Anime attracts a lot of people, and it is more accessible than you can realize. For one shitty smug anime poster or twitter user, or for one "ironic anime fan", there are 10 normal fans of anime.

I've known people who you are describing. Most of them were quite insecure people that hid behind an online image they created, which would involve the ambiguity of using random anime pictures. It's like a shield for them, since you can't really see what they look like.

IMO there's Anime, then there's the weird loli shit. There are a lot of completely normal people that grew up liking Naruto, Dragon Ball, One Piece, etc.

Then you have those that are into your (insert underage girl loli) anime. I believe most of them are just extremely lonely guys who missed the boat on the dating scene in life. Then there's of course the alt-right ppl.

Edit: I can also imagine a large percentage of those that watch loli type anime are pre-teen guys who haven't entered the dating scene yet.

What is the connection that I'm missing? Whenever there is an awful person on Twitter more than likely they are using an anime avatar. It gives Anime a bad rep and I don't know why they use them.

anime is an exceedingly poor representation of reality, made to appeal to very (very) specific and overly simplified feelings and emotions that never translate well into real life because they're unrealistic and shallow

usually leads to people with severely warped views on sexuality, relationships, pretty much anything dealing with real-life dynamics between two living people

Is this really surprising? A genre filled with wish fulfillment fantasies appeals to aborrhent men?

Same reason there is an insane amount of overlap between GamerGate and Trump supporters/wanna be Nazis.

A bunch of asshole nerds who would rather find fake enemies instead of taking a minute for serious self reflection and change. It's all a cover for their own failures in life, so they all group together and jerk off each other's ego about how great and better than everyone else they are.

I'm gonna disagree because the worst people that exist on the planet on Twitter use their real pictures and have the checkmark next to their name.
