Sony Playstation: First Party Studios & their Current Projects

TLL pretty much proves ND are among the few devs who has a hyper-speed definition of a "long wait."

If anything, I wouldn't be surprised anymore if TLOU2 is next year.

I honestly wouldn't expect it to release until mid-2019 at the earliest. While TLL was quick, it's only a slice compared to what they've got to do with TLoU. The original was a rather long game, plus they've got to do a new multiplayer mode and it's the game that's showcasing their advancements in visuals. Neil mentioned at PSX that Ellie was the most advanced character model of any game to come out of Sony.

Take your time, let it cook, make it right, I got plenty to play.
Only in chapter 4 but ND make TLL in one year is very impressive.

Well, wasnt expecting it to come before mid 2019, but when the posting lists openings from gameplay animator, cinematic lighting, visual effects artist to single player level game designer,gameplay/graphics programmer, not sure if this is going to hit shelves in 2019 at all.(or they are hiring to develop another game in parallel? :D)

I have a feeling that PSX is going to be release date central. They may even show the full 6 month lineup (first half of the year) in release order (or reverse release).

I feel like PSX is nailed on to be a great show. They'll give new trailers and finally a release date for God of War, Spider-Man and Shadow of the Colossus (Detroit will be PGW). Something The Last of Us II related for sure. And then there's all the unknowns where only a couple need to hit: Death Stranding, Red Dead, thatgamecompany, Sucker Punch, Rocksteady, Crash/Spyro, KH3/FF7.

I think Uncharted legitimately has better run-and-gun gameplay, to which ROTTR was more limiting, and Uncharted benefited from its more linear structure, while ROTTR suffered in its open areas with poorly done side quests.

So much this...

I can see that happening. Definitely God of War and Detroit, maybe Spider-Man too. Hoping we get Sucker Punch's game revealed, and maybe Bloodborne 2.

I see those last 2 more of a E3 reveal...

My guess would be 2-2.5 years from now.

Has to be a 2019. 2018 is packed, but what other firsr party games are we specting for 2019? Death Stranding, Sucker's Punch and mb Bloodborne 2?

Edit: Which would make for an amazing year, granted, but 2 of those are not even announced yet:P

I think everything that's announced will be 2019 at latest.
PS5 should be end of 2019, so I guess we may start seeing some crossgen projects next year already.

Please no… I think they will announce PS5 in feb 2020 with a release in november 2020.
I think most people agree that the PS4 has lot of life left, unlike the consensus of the PS3 era.

2 years is still a lot of life though. If it launches in 2020 it will be the same as the ps3, that's a bit too much imo.
I didn't buy a pro so I guess people that buy these mid-gen consoles might feel different.

I wouldn't put it past Sony to show Sucker Punch's new game off at PSX. Last of Us part 2 trailer was PSX if I remember.

It could happen. If it does, that definitely means Sony is readjusting their conference priorities. Maybe if a game reveal isn't quite ready they'll just send it to PSX or maybe even target PSX from the beginning.

- date reveals for GoW, Detroit, Days Gone, and Spider Man.
- gameplay reveal for Death Stranding (with date lols)
- SP's IP revealed

Though tbh, I can see Detroit and some other big game getting a date reveal at PGW. Bloodborne II and TLOU II seem like good reveals for E3 next year.

Japan studio will have only one external project with Bluepoint by the time they host pre TGS conference.
It's about time we get new project announcement from them.

The next time TLOU II shows up it should be gameplay trailer imo. So I think they'll skip PSX this year so they can actually make the game.

Kojima was play testing Death Stranding some time ago and seemed like he was happy with the results, maybe we can see gameplay soon.

Unless surprise, there is no point in riding a gen down when you could ride a wave of success and launch a new gen with perfect timing (and BC) and possibly getting ahead of competition.

Imo it's a clear path to March-June 2019 for TLOU2, while the PS5 would be announced in Feb or March 2019, and releasing in Nov 2019 @ $399.

Kinda... with game development being as long as it is (AI, interactivity, destructibility, detail), it's not the same as, say, a six year PS2 cycle where AAA game development required smaller teams and less money. Seven for this gen seems a lot better, and I really wouldn't mind if it went eight. Teams are already so big, and there's always a concern for me that unless prices are raised, DLC/microtransactions will become more prevalent since developers need different ways to make money.

I can definitely wait until 2020, and with the PS4 selling as well as it is, I hope that's the case.

Naughty Dog has been at every PSX since the first though. Don't think they'll be MIA this time. A story trailer at the least is a realistic expectation

Not only that, they have opened every PSX so far. and I don't see that changing this year either. I doubt we see gameplay but it's not impossible, just like they showed alpha Uncharted 4 gameplay at PSX they could do the same for TLOUII. I do agree that a stroy trailer is more realistic though.

My only concern about showing it at PSX is they may have no major unannounced first party/exclusive stuff to debut at E3 2018. Probably getting a little ahead of myself at this point mind you.

They can announce it with a trailer at PSX, then do live demo like they did for God of war at E3.

I think that works out fine.

2020 would be the earliest I'd want to see a new generation. Games take forever these days and I'd rather every studio get another game or two out before the end of this gen. New tech is awesome and allows for a lot of cool stuff to happen in games, but if you're only getting a few games each gen, why rush to the next one?

But iirc that was not Sony's idea, it was Druckmann that insisted. Sony wanted to wait until E3, which in hindsight would've made for the mick-drop moment that the presentation needed..

I feel some of the lukewarm reactions would have been huge had it waited.

At the end of the day, it doesn't really make a difference as the development of all the games shown are the same regardless as to when they're actually shown, but had Spider-Man and TLOU waited until 2017, I think people would have been far more positive about the conference.

I think PS5 will see late gen PS4 remasters. Example Last of Us 2, Death Stranding in 4k/60

But agree if the PS5 plays PS4 titles, remasters will be rare.

There's still a lot of PS3 games they could remaster for PS5 though.
Infamous Collection, Motorstorm, Demon's Souls. I'd want all of those and I could see it happening.

You can't really compare it like this. In TLL Naughty Dog basically used the same assets as in U4 (no problem with that, because it's an expansion to the base game). TLoU2 is a different game AND bigger/longer.

May 2019.

Totally agree. The one-year turn is still very impressive for what is essentially a full-length AAA title with a new story, dialogue, encounters, set pieces, etc., but there's no way we're getting a different and likely longer game with different multiplayer and different gameplay (that they might be experimenting on) by next holiday.

Still i expect them to use assets form UC4 and TLL in TLOU2.
I going with June 2019 and will be ND longest game yet .
