PewDiePie Responds after using racial slur

Half the people who say it is just a word, I wonder how they respond to words like White Privilege.

Because whenever you say that term some white people get triggered as fuck.

To those saying I was defending him in the other thread, I am not. I am just simply pointing out what many have come out and said here, anything he says is worthless because for many people he is past redemption given his past.

There you go, Beefy admits it, nothing he says will do it. I'm saying why critique the apology if you know anything he says won't be good enough. Just come out and say no apology is good enough from the get go.

You really, really want to make him the victim here lmao

Can the OP include the original video of the "slip up" so those who will be posting can see what actually happened? We had many people jumping in on the old thread without seeing the video.

It was in the OP of the last thread and it didn't stop people from doing exactly that. They don't care about his fuck up, they just want to blindly defend him.

Will quote what I said in the other thread.
Watched the apology.

I thought it was eh. It's good that he realizes he's not improving and has to better. But if he really thinks that then he has to outline a plan of action. Simply saying "I'll do better" is dandy and all, but it's outlining the steps you take that make all the difference. He's not required to share the steps with the public by any means - it's his personal life - but as of right now we just have a "woops won't happen again" with no reason to believe it actually won't.

And of course, an apology never immediately excuses you from what you did in the first place.
It really comes down to action now, he needs to actually do something. For example, he says he said it in the heat of the moment. Perhaps some anger management courses wouldn't be out of place? It may sound extreme, but if it helps reduce his massive (young) audiences exposure to this kind of crap then I say it's worth it. Or put some money where your mouth is and donate to some causes that support the black community.

Basically, as has been said, talk is cheap.

I'm glad he apologized. It's a good thing to do when you have an audience of literally millions of children and that's not going to be changing anytime soon.

He's still a racist though and I will continue to think of him that way until some time passes and he gives me a reason not to. People can change, but only if they want to and only if they think they actually did something wrong.

Actions speak louder then words

Means nothing. His pattern of behavior shows just who he is.

And this won't be the last time he uses the word like this, he'll just be extra careful while live on camera (until the next slip up down the road).

It takes two days to say something? Fuck outta here.

Seriously. Considering the magnitude of this situation and his huge fanbase, PLUS the reaction he's gotten, we should have heard something sooner.

Like someone else mentioned, this feels like a PR person wrote this. I hope more dev's use copyright claims to pull down more of his content.

What an garbage indirect apology that doesn't provide steps on how he will change as a person. The apology is nothing but hot air; if he was sincere about his problems .he would have discussed how he will tale time off streaming and looked for help due to his multiple transgressions . He is not sincere , and he is an repeat offender who just spew racist language offline. Garbage apology from a fairly garbage person.

His apology means nothing at this point, but that doesn't mean he's unforgivable.

If he actually enforces his apology and nothing like this ever happens again then THAT would be his true apology. Not sure he'll manage this though.

No mere apology would be good enough regardless of how good it was given his past transgressions. Action is most certainly required

Problem is, if the apology itself is shitty then why should anyone believe that there's going to be any actual redeemable actions to follow?

How many more chances is this piece of shit going to get?
What a silly question, he's white his chances are infinite.

He has made apologies before, this is pretty meaningless. His fan-base will eat it up, I can only hope that his advertisers won't.

But at this point I'm angrier at all the other youtubers trying to rationalize what he did.

Apologies are fine, but as I clicked to see it, I realised I actually gave him a click and therefore, revenue, for an apology video. Which means there's incentive to make mistakes, create controversy, and then make apologies. So I'm sad I clicked and I hope others don't because honestly - he just says sorry.

PDP is already rich so the loss of advertisers won't be a big deal. It's everyone else in the content mire of Youtube that will pay for his mistakes.

Strikes me as insincere, and just trying to "hide his power level" again.

His streams are full of screaming about Jews and SJWs and climate denial and he follows all the alt-reich figureheads. We know what's going on, he knows what's going on, we've just got this bullshit where no one is calling it out yet.

Too little, too late. If you look at the comments section you can already see the damage that's been done. What a terrible thing to form a solidarity around.

As I said in the other thread. Even if PDP didn't have a fucked up past it is a weak ass apology.

Yup. "sorry if you get offended"
Talk of "Immature and stupid" rather than a fucking hateful word.
Edited because he can't just be sincere for a couple of minutes.

He's genuinely thinking about his dollars and nothing else. Even then, probably won't matter much. People using this as another war on people getting offended. What a trash fire. The comments show you how little the majority of his fanbase care. Extremely sad state of affairs.

I was never subbed to him to begin with but how the hell did this video take so long to make and why is it so clearly edited?

I'd rather not, because this isn't going to be a thread discussing what he meant when he said it, or whether it's acceptable to use. We did that already, and if people try to drag it back up and keep having that argument, I'm going to toss them.

There's no question about what he did. He called another player "fucking nigger", clearly and unambiguously. And there will be no defense of that in this thread -- where he himself has categorically said that his behavior was wrong and inexcusable.

If I see ANY defense of his use of the word, no benefit of the doubt will be given.

Holy shit those YT comments...

'He said sorry so it's okay, it's just a word bla bla'

ffs

Wow, YT comments just make you question so many things in life. I can't believe like 90% of the peoples comments are in actual support of him saying that we all make mistakes and it's ok. Like... WTF

Can anyone sum up what he said? I'd prefer not to give PDP any clicks.

Word

Fairly boilerplate apology speech: "Heat of the moment, I hate that I've done something that I hate seeing others do, I apologize if I've offended anybody, I need to do better for myself and my audience because I'm better than that."

Didn't come off as completely insincere but given his history with such apologies it's my concern that he (or someone else) wrote the speech to protect his livelihood and he's on his best behavior until the next time this happens. He doesn't actually address what happened specifically, he talks about it very abstractly as if he could recycle this apology for any type of misbehavior. He doesn't tackle racism per se, but 'something bad I did and I'm sorry I did the bad thing." To me that's the crux of whether or not you believe he understands why what he did was wrong.

What struck me about the video is the editing. Does he normally insert cuts after every sentence or is that the usual structure for the 'Felix talking not PewDiePie' one-on-one type videos he's released in the past?

I repeat what I have said. he is using ''In the heat of the moment'' as an excuse

Fuck that.

The apology seemed sincere to me, what matters tho is his attitude after this

question, what makes it sincere.

It does'nt seem to have a any sincerity behind it since a sincere person wouldn't:

- Take 2 days to apologise
- Do 100 camera cuts to do a 2 mins video
- Use heat in the moment as an excuse
- Refrain Saying exactly if he would do something about it
- Refrain why the word is such a bad word to use in today climate

Etc...

The apology omits any sort of past counter-accusations at media conspiracies or "it was just a joke" crap. That said, past apologies both: A) exist and were needed, and B) did contain above bullcrap.

I've been in the midst of a discussion on the Giant Bomb facebook group (being in my 40's, using Facebook is demographically appropriate for me), and yesterday someone posted a link to a very similar apology from Ryan Davis for a similar past transgression: https://www.giantbomb.com/forums/general-discussion-30/my-worst-moment-545740/.

Ryan acted immediately and posted an apology article right away and bleeped the affected footage. PDP may have issued a better apology this time, somewhat faster, but of course already after a firestorm of controversy.

The thing to do, to outrun the controversy while on stream and show your true self, would have been to stop playing and turn immediately to the camera and say that.

As it was I think we actually saw his true self. You don't utter that word in the heat of the moment if you're not familiar with it outside of the heat of the moment. None of that, nor the impact fo its use, is addressed. PDP's reach is far beyond that of Giant Bomb, and we live in a different age, with more at stake and tension at an all-time high it sometimes seems. I feel like more and better was required.

So I continue not to watch this guy I never watched in the first place, but I will also point this out and have a discussion about it with my son, as I did when the Wall Street Journal called him out for flying swastikas and making Jew-killing jokes. The fact of the matter is we don't want our kids watching people like this all day and using them as their role models. We want someone better, and I really wish we could just replace this dude rather than slowly, tortuously watch him fail or succeed to learn all these lessons.

How many times does he have to "learn from this" before people realize he's a perpetual shithead? After the homophobic slurs? Rape jokes? Genocide jokes? Multiple uses of the n word over the years?

As i said...i dont know the dude very well and never have seen any of his videos. I dont care about the YT personalities at all. I know he did something stupid and messed up...he apologized for it, thats it.

Accepting the apology or not doesnt change anything...its on him anyway and people will judge him in the future for that.

To anyone giving him the benefit of the doubt, this isn't a one off for the guy. This the the third "apology" that I know of (could be more for all I know) 1. Rape jokes 2. Anti-semetic jokes, and now this one. So it's not the first time, and it's not going to be the last. It's just who he is.
