Should I bother watching DUNE 1984?

I want to read the book, and I will be there for Deni's version when it comes out, but am I doing myself a disservice by watching the old one?

Should I just read the book first?

The film has good actors, but is an absolute abortion concerning the plot.

Read the book (the fullcast audio book casts the voice actor of HK47 as Piter De Vries), and watch the extended cut of the 2000 Sci-Fi miniseries. Understand that all 6 hours still manages to omit virtually half the book.

Dune is an unfilmable book, period.

I tried to watch the movie recently and was bored to death and didn’t last more than 30 mins. Would have been my second viewing. I think the first was around when Netflix started their mailing service, which was also when I read the book.

Dune has this cult following thing. I'm not a book reader, so I'd never bother reading it.

But a long time ago, I tried watching Dune movie. Shitty budget snorefest. It's a sci-fi political drama from what I remember, but I didnt watch the whole thing, so I missed the ending with the sand worms.

Maybe the last half of the movie is much better.

The movie is a hot mess that differs from the book in a bunch of key ways, but I still love it. Worth watching for Kenneth McMillan's performance as The Baron, he delivers a pretty cool version of him.

Dune 1984 movie is very hit or miss. Mostly miss.

I would say you don't have to watch the 1984 movie. I'm a big time Dune fan and I highly disagree with it.

Hell, Lynch doesn't even want to be associated with his own Dune movie.

I enjoyed it when I saw it in high school but haven't watched it since then, I thought the art direction was excellent overall. Not a very good Lynch movie.

About 1/3rd of the dialogue in the book is internal dialogue. Meaning, you are reading the inner thoughts, speculations, fears, visions, and prediction of the characters, all throughout the story. This is very hard to film, but at least Lynch attempted which is why you hear narrative dialogue from the characters constantly during the film while they stare at one another.

^ on point.

I actually thought Lynch's film was, for the most part, a pretty decent adaptation. The inherent problem is that the book is as DunDun pointed out a lot of the time conveyed through various characters thoughts, which isn't easy to show on the screen when they don't have confidants to bounce off of, as occurs with most films. It was never going to be the next star Wars.

Albeit I'm a huge fan of Dennis V (2049 was a absolute delight). I don't think Dune was a project worth revisiting truth be told as a film, and regardless of how well it might be received critically, I'm expecting it to flounder at the box office. I think Villeneuve should probably have passed and with both 2049 and Arrival under his belt, maybe opted for something a bit more conventional that can demonstrate that he has the ability to put bums on seats, before dipping back into Sci-fi. All the critical praise in the world isn't going to get your future projects greenlit if Studios think your films are going to be a bust.

Anyway. I'd say to the OP read the book first.

The 1984 movie gave us the aesthetihcs of all the Westwood Dune games, so thanks Lynch for that!

Other than that - it's a mess. Lot of things have been either omitted or wrongly presented.

It's fine to watch, but i would first read the book, that way you would understand more of the movie. I had a better time after reading the book then my wife - she was confused way too many times to enjoy it.

The newer mini series have their own problems. They aren't better. They are just "different".

I genuinely like the Dune miniseries even though it clearly had a budget of $18 and looked very cheap. They made a real attempt at adapting the story and trying to get it right. Too bad they didn't have the budget to do it justice visually.

Watch the movie. Read the book. The question is whether you want to watch the theatrical version or the extra long director cut.

I think its good to watch the movie and read the book to let you understand the great difficulty of trying to translate the book into film. There's several issues, mainly the depth and complexity of the world, and the heavy amount of internal monologue.

Here's a video done on why the 1984 film is important:

The miniseries is MUCH closer to the book, but yeah, it looked terrible at the time and age has made it even worse. The acting is pretty spotty in it too, though the role of The Baron once again delivers the best performance.

I think they got the look of the characters better in the SciFi TV series, but the acting was largely forgettable. Chani in that series looked more like what I expected Chani to look like. Sean Young is an established actress, but she looked like a Ripley knockoff.

Most people seemed to dislike the art direction for the Lynch movie, but I loved it. Some of it was pretty terrible, like the freaking glorified hazmat suits that they used for the Sardaukar, but I loved the Atreides and Harkonnen designs.

I actually like the movie. However, if you haven't read the book, you don't know WTF is going on, because they have to rush a lot of the stuff without adequate foundation.

Yup, the movie has great costumes mixed with really cheap looking ones.

I loved the Imperial uniforms of house Corino and the Sardaukars (not the trooper ones, like you mentioned they are shit), the Bene Gesserit also looked way better than in the 2000 mini series. The bald eugenic witches had a shroud of mystery, not those crazy wings attached to their hats 😐

But for every great costume you get trash men like the Sardaukar troopers or the Spacing Guild dudes. They looked like what you get when you want to cosplay cheaply.

Oh and Peter de Vries. I loved the crazy look he had.

The XIX century military uniform aesthetic mixed well with the low-fi technology.

... But seriously fuck the Lynch Ornithopters.

I liked the movie but I'm a child of the 80s so the campyness doesn't both me.
The movie starts out slow but mid way thru to the end is very good.
I found much of the book to be a slog too so YMMV.
I believe Dune is on Netflix

I loved this movie so much. Still feel like it is underrated.

You are not alone. The film Is very unique. It’s not necessarily a film I’d openly recommend friends/strangers to watch, but back when tv was a thing, and it would be on, i wouldn’t be able to turn away. Loved the soundtrack by TOTO as well. The film is dream-like-sci-fi. There’s nothing quite like it.

Dunes only problem is the script really since it was kind of butchered but it's still a good movie. Especially if you're a fan of David lynch as he directed it. If you get bored by his pacing then you'll not like the movie at all.

I have the region free extended cut on blu ray and it's a better version to watch.

But a lot of people that have short attention spans, insane expectations that can't just enjoy it for what is is, and die hard novel fans usually hate it.

Its kind of like the shining. The movie deviated from the book but it was still excellent in it's own right.

The one movie that David Lynch refuses to talk about :messenger_ok:

I enjoyed it as a wee lad when I had an irresponsible-as-fuck babysitter. Didn't really know what was going on though.

The movie has some spectacular moments and a truly bizarre tone that sets it apart from the rest of the sci-fi genre (David Lynch being the reason, naturally). I highly recommend it, despite its final form not quite coming together as well as it could.

the intro is so cool. i remember the first time watching it, "Woah this space chick is pretty cool" as she sets up the film over a starfield. then she starts to fade out. then she comes back. then she fades out again. then she fades back in and says "Oh yes, I forgot to tell you..." i started laughing. maybe that was cos i was high but the movie is really enjoyable in a MST3K kind of way.

Picard fighting in a VR holographic bodysuit is way cool! the low res nature of the CGI is even a point in it's favor i'd argue, and looks way cooler than any of the CGI suits they project nowadays. think about that, David Lynch was doing the fully body CGI costume swaps 20+ years before Iron Man.

his penchant for montage and trippy sequences makes this a lot of fun to watch. he is also good at bringing a seriousness to scenes when it counts. the part where Paul learns about some mystical Force-like power from his teacher and is being tested is really intense and crazy, despite it just being two people in a room with a box. some good overlooked acting in this.

The movie has some great things about it. Production design is impeccable. Very gritty. Fabulous soundtrack. The movie feels like nothing else, even it makes little sense. They copied this style and production elements for Dune videogames and tv shows.

People shit on that movie, but I really enjoy it.

If you read the book I assume it is not a great interpretation.

But if you are a fan of David Lynch, and ignore the book, it is a fascinating film.

Probably top three for me when it comes to Lynch.

2 Thumbs up on the Mini Series. Has slight issues like re-used scenes and some things left out from the book, but it's decent.
