"As infections continue to rise, more than one and a half billion people - that's a fifth of the world's population - have been asked or ordered to stay at home." (3/23/20)

WHO report it on december 29. First record is from november 17.

And Human to Human transmission wasn't known till Jan 20th.

But what you are saying is China knew about this on November 17th and still allowed it to escape on a global level and become a pandemic like the Spanish Flu.

Thanks CHYNA.

Yeah. I don't have much of a problem with it. There are far too many people in my life who could be adversely affected by this to take the whole matter lightly. I wouldn't say I'm needlessly worried per se, but certainly, I'm finding it hard to think long about anything else at present (least of all games, unfortunately). As for being in the UK, well that's certainly the meat space but after years of too much internet, I'm not sure it's necessarily the headspace. 🤔

It is a bit all consuming, I just had a chat with my partner tonight about just that. We have agreed to take a day keeping our noses out of the news tomorrow. She's worried about her mum and me mine. So if you see me posting in this thread tomorrow you'll know I am breaking my word! It would be good to have a day off tho. I'll no doubt be contributing to the movie thread through this week.

I have mixed feelings about the extent of the nanny-ing. The ethical question of how much the government should be able to make people stay safe whether or not they want to.

Trump is starting to signal an end to quarantine, and I increasingly think it's likely.
  1. Americans aren't big on government submission. They'll play along for a few weeks, maybe, but then they'll say "screw this."
  2. Related: people need to feed their families. There are a whole lot of Americans who simply don't get paid if they don't work. You want to throw a thousand bucks at them? Okay, that maybe covers one month of rent.
  3. Trump's reelection depends on the economy. He's powerfully incentivized to end quarantine even before other leaders would want him to. And yeah, governors could countermand him (California will) but do you want to be the guy insisting everyone stay home after the president gives the all-clear?
  4. The US doesn't have the military or police resources – state, national or combined – to enforce quarantine for almost 300 million restless citizens. Are they going to arrest everyone?

So yeah, just a question of "how soon" to my mind. I don't say whether it's the wisest or best course of action; only that restrictions will probably get lifted quickly.

Won't work. Two big issues I can see here. First, if all the baristas are back at Starbucks, do you think the people who buy coffee there will show up? The people who can afford to stay at home, and who have jobs that allow for it will continue to do so since that's going to be what's recommended even if Trump is somehow able to lift the quarantine.

The second issue sort of kills the above as he can't give that order. It's up to the state Governors and if they want to keep their state at home they can, Trump's wishes be damned.

I kinda do, actually... I feel like the only thing keeping people home are government/company orders, but I may be wrong.

Exactly.
He never even ordered the shutdowns, and he thinks he's going to stop it?
He thinks we're going to ask scared, and at risk employees to come to work? He thinks we're going to risk the lives of our loved ones because he needs to help his election chances? The UK tried it, they gave it up quickly.
But by all means, send the farmers and middle America back to work, we need more fruits and vegetables.
Get the stimulus out to just the people. Lock everything down for 3 weeks to 1 month, and then reevaluate. Show us you give a shit, not that you are shit.

Over 30% of our employees said that they would not come in last week (Edit: Almost 2 weeks ago now) even if we paid 1.5x, and many added that we would need to let them go if we tried to force it. That number will easily be over 50% when the numbers of sick and dead keep surging.

Also if we turn the economy back and force people to go to work sick and possibly infect others. Then how are we any different then the CCP who are doing the exact same thing right now?

Governer Jay Inslee just announced a stay the fuck home order for Washington state. Not sure what the end date is... All non-essential business needs to close within 48 hours. Apparently penalties will not be significant.

This virus doesn't kill most people but many people need to be hospitalized. It's a pretty simple concept. Here's a Spanish hospital that is overrun. Some of these people are going to get treated but a lot will die because they never got treatment.

I think most people in the West will show up to buy coffee. I think to most people right now this is foreign. They see it on TV and say ah it won't hit me. Unfortunately, it will take a well known person dying or an immediate family member getting it for it to hit them. It's just the way humans are.

Boris locking down the UK with an iron fist.

Welcome. Welcome to City 17.

Not really. Johnson, being a typical Tory, has been as vague and listless as possible. We can shop and exercise outside. On an individual level it will be very easy to ignore the advice, which is all it is right now.

Worst possible person to be in charge right now. Only a couple of weeks ago he described hundreds of thousands dying for his hurd immunity as being a matter of "taking it on the chin."

Only changed his tune when advised that genocide isn't a good look.

Iron fist? 😆

USA had 3 months to prepare, and then, blames China?

Yeah, guys, that only goes to show how moronic your leadership is.

Though, erhm, hey, most countries in Europe wants to join the moron club too.. :\

It is fucking wierd how the western world reacted so slowly.

really, this is your comment? I have a feelng I have more friends in your country than you do,.

From news I read it's pretty strict. Can only exercise once a day outside and only leave to do grocery shopping or get meds. Apparently it's enforced.

At least stricter than here.

Trump and folk said it would disappear like a miracle. It's a joke how he handled this whole thing. Ppl still think it's not serious because of idiots like him.

Maybe the world would have reacted faster if China and their cocksleeve Ted had not (as we know now) blatantly lied about the Kung Flu.

All nations knew by january 12, today, it is march 24? How many months is that, and still alot of nations aren't doing or performing the same responses?

Yeah, that is 3 month's isn't it?

Not even 3 months...2 months 12 days. At least learn to math. Plus, it isn't even the 24th yet in the USA. It is the 24th in China though...

I take it all very seriously anyway, but I know what people are like in the UK. It will just be ignored. Stock responses will be 'I'm off to the shop', or 'I'm going out for a jog'. It will probably more helpful preventing groups gathering.

It won't be enforced. There's not enough people.

How is it enforced? Copper stands outside everyone's home and checks them in and out?

Please don't shoot the messenger. Just telling you what I read.

"If you don't follow the rules, the police will have the powers to enforce them, including through fines and dispersing gatherings."

Force? Force? Who's talking about force? If you tell the average blue-collar worker he's allowed to go back to work and start making money again, he's going to immediately do it. Heck, he may do it long before you tell him he's allowed.

We can't control what China was doing but we can control what we do. The huge number of deaths indicates that has been spreading in the United States for more than a month. Most people don't die right away. Here is a calendar of events.

They do when the Kung Flu hits nursing homes and older obese people first.

And I stopped at "months of denial". Trump cut off Chinese travel before any other country did a damn thing, and that was months ago. That's why the strains showing up in the US come from Europe.

Just words. I couldn't tell you the last time I saw a copper anywhere.

We're a pretty passive-aggressive country that will just do whatever we want. I'll do what I can to stay indoors but most wont. This country is full of self-centred pricks.
So in other words you're like us Americans.

Why isn't it good? We are behind on testing, it's expected.

From what I've heard from my friend who's living in the US. A lot of people are complacent about it, like people still go to beaches and parties even if there's a lockdown.

Umm... Trump can only do so much. He is President, not dictator. And he bases his opinions on that of experts, though obviously there are experts saying lots of different, conflicting, things. And yes, if Trump points out essential industries that need to stay functioning, some people are brave enough to make that happen.

Masks aren't going to make themselves. They aren't going to ship themselves. We need to function, even while everything is up in the air. There is no answer to this that does not have significant downside, and pointing at those downsides and blaming any one man is absurd. We are in a global pandemic, with a mysterious, invisible disease and worldwide panic.

The one thing I can guarantee is that Trump won't do exactly what you want. Or what I want. Or what any single expert wants. He has to take far more into account, and also has access to far more expertise via the medical community, business leaders, etc. That you even suggest he doesn't give a shit is ridiculous.

Consider this, you won't even know the full death count in Italy until the military sweeps and checks every house for bodies. Who knows how many people died in their sleep from asphyxiation or before they had a chance to ask for emergency help.

That whole process could take months.

I thought, years ago, that 'taking care of my mom' was the right thing to do - but now, because I'm working in a care home with a major outbreak I've likely sentenced her to death, and she has no idea. One washroom in our little bungalow and no room to breathe.

My mom simply cannot grasp the situation we're in. Last night, unfortunately, I lost my temper with her, and I'm ashamed to say that at one point she was curled up in a chair shaking and crying uncontrollably. I was certain she was going to have a stroke.

I don't know what to do.

I love my mom so much - but I don't think I can save her. I'll likely be without an income soon as well. Honestly, I'm at the end of my tether almost.

Media outlets slamming Trump or any other world leader - aside from China's Xi the Pooh, he deserves far more heat than he's currently receiving - for downplaying the virus early on is the height of hypocrisy. Here's some evidence to back that up compiled by Tucker Carlson, fast forward to the 1:20 min mark for a variety of examples from media outlets and Democrats downplaying the virus even after Trump imposed travel restrictions:

Make note of Mark D. Levine's message in particular, the gathering and the date.

Hindsight's 20/20, but without that vital data out of China early on the rest of the world was always going to be headed down this current trajectory.

You're a good person. All the best to you and your mom. You have my sympathies but also remember there is always something you can do. Try reaching out to friends or relatives they may have some ideas. We recently had to move our grandma to another relative because my aunt is a nurse and was called in.

It doesn't even mean that. Only New York is, the rest of the country is sitting on their hands.

I don't think it's really fair to say people are sitting on their hands. The regions in which people are dying (Washington state, California, New York in particular) are testing. Why would you go out and test your entire state's population if you're not seeing tons of people reporting symptoms, pouring into the hospitals, and dying.
