Microsoft acquires Zenimax/Bethesda

Another alternative is MS try to strongarm Sony into including Gamepass on PS5. Basically, "you can have the games but they have to be included with Gamepass".

I'm just not sure that's going to bring in enough money for MS but - at the end of the day - MS are not a hardware company. They're a software company.

Huge win for Microsoft 🥺

But honestly i wonder why, Zenimax were doing very good as a third party publisher with DOOM on every console including Switch, Wolfestein did pretty good too. Is the game industry so unstable for third party companies they have to attach to a larger company. DOOM has fans all over 🥺🥺

I feel like this is getting out of control, i can see the future everybody absorbing more third party companies until there are only the biggest are left

It looked rushed. I'm not taking anything away from it.

Don't know why the quote won't work?

I can think a game is great and rushed. They can exist together. But let's not get off topic.

This could be the greatest gaming news this year

2020 redeemed?

So what was the point of that acquisition?
the more i hear takes on it, the more i think Todd is just talking about the many Xboxes and PCs and Phones that will have access to... but if the games are coming to PS5 aswell then the point would be just to have those same games on Gamepass day 1 at no additional costs

i dont know if thats a big enough pull for it to be worth it though

Of course Microsoft could have gamepass on PlayStation. Sony would just ask for 30% revenue. They could do that now, Sony wouldn't say no.

Exclusives shouldn't be an issue - Sony just needs to allow gamepass on PS5... :messenger_sunglasses:
Where is this insane belief that Sony is blocking Gamepass? Microsoft can pay their rent like anyone else.

literally anything is on the table when you have “fuck you”money.

although it may not be good overall for gamers and it's microsoft - i hope this ends well and good games are made because of it.

i personally don't mind having to buy an xbox for their games. that's just how business works.

I can't imagine that's the reason they would spend 7b.

It would make more sense for them to put them on everything except PlayStation (talking purely from a business perspective here, I've got nothing again PS players).

Yeah, this is what I would do. Especially the big games like Doom and Elder Scrolls.

Having an in to cloud publishing could be huge. There is a definite feeling among publishers that if you aren’t ready for the cloud you could get left behind.

That would be more sensible to do, more money for Microsoft to make.

Seems like MS's strategy may be going there. They have the Series consoles as a cheap entry to gamepass, and in 7 years time they will crack something with Sony and Nintendo to have gamepass on their consoles. It's a big win for the model they've been trying to run since Phil joined. This is if the Series consoles fail, and I'd consider a fail a bigger difference than this current gen when compared to Sony. If they end up selling well, this can definitely change.

The hilarious thing is that everybody is jumping at me for cracking a joke when I'm here laughing about that same joke. As said, here's hoping that MS whip Bethesda in shape, their fans deserve a proper game and not some Fallout 76 crap or TES 6 with the same 20 year old engine.

leads to fear. Fear leads to xbox.

sony doesnt want gamepass, its been stated before. I doubt they'd have the competition with an app on their platform.

I know it's popular. That doesn't refute anything I said, it's still not the same as games that might as well not even exist yet (TES6, FO5).

They may well still be putting those games on Playstation, but Minecraft's existence isn't proof that that'll happen.
Well, technically they bought Mojang and MS could've easily decided that there would be no more sales on PS and/or updates on PS. But they didn't and that decision made them a LOT of money. Maybe the decision to make it an exclusive (Game pass?) game would have made them more, but they did not take that. So i think it is comparable, while not exactly the same.

But I agree with you. I was just not agreeing with someone who thought that it was already set in stone that all the Bethesda games were now going to be Xbox exclusives.

Amazing deal from MS and talented teams at Bethesda. Bring new franchises to blow our minds. Evil Within has been still the horror game of the generation.

Sony is gonna buy FROM software or Platinum Games next, Nintendo isn't gonna buy anything unless it costs cents because they are cheap

Holly cow!! This is a gigaton. I have never bought a game from Bethesda but recognize that there are a lot of people who have done it. Great move MS by owning major creators like Bethesda.

According to my friend who is a Nintendo fanboy who hates Sony, they are selling buildings to keep afloat to stem the bleeding. They have been in the red for a long time.

I also heard the head honchos at Sony are only having left over egg sushi and miso soup for dinner instead of their usual ootoro, unagi and sake.
Sony was selling lots of buildings in 2013. Like 550 Madison Avenue and office buildings in Japan. Was that to stay afloat? Maybe. Outside of Playstation they are in bad shape for years now. For years they were kept afloat by insurance business in JP and Playstation.

If Bethesda games aren’t going to be exclusive to XBox, this ain’t quite the big deal it seems...

Makes sense.

This move actually brings closer the reality that MS turning full multiplatform publisher in the future, buying up devs and publishers gives them all the tools to challenge EA, Activision etc. They could make so much more money doing that than fighting a losing battle against Nintendo and Sony.

Looking at the launch line-up and first year game release schedule for XsX/S, they're hardware is going to be outsold hard, likely worse than this gen.

I know but that the net worth, it does not say how much they have on hands.
Net worth is a hell of alot more important than cash value, I was explaining this last week in the tech analysis thread. If I'm worth $5 million but only have $20 I can still buy a million dollar house

Reaction Predictions

XBox Fans:
"Holt Shit!!! We got more great studios. I'll get to play great games in GamePass Day One.

Sony Fans:
"Meh. They paid too much. The last few Fallout games sucked. I'll just play it on my PC."

Damn Ill miss Doom.
Massive buy for MS.
Bethesda had a pretty shitty generation though
What? Bethesda as a publisher had a pretty good generation. Wolfenstein New Order and II, Doom/Eternal, Dishonored 2

Now BGS on the other hand...
BGS has never made a good game anyway
