You guys are probably talking about combat, gameplay doesn't encompass only combat, especially in a RPG. TW3 has incredible world and quest design and it's a very immersive game. Let me give you guys an example of what I mean: in Horizon Zero Dawn, you walk around doing retarded shit for retarded characters that nobody gives a shit about. TW3 sets you on a myriad of memorable quests, you're doing awesome stuff all the time like a badass slayer of monsters and fucker of sorceresses. It's wholesome and the combat does not get in the way.

Ironic that TW3 could face BOTW in the Finals, the game with my (for real this time) least favorite complaint about any game ever in regards to its weapon degradation system.
Idk combat is a huge thing in RPG too imagine playing a massive JRPG with clumsy combat mechanics 🤢

BotW has issues too but imo its far more interesting and fun to explore thanks to its physics based puzzles and jumping etc.

This thread is such a hilarious rollercoaster.

Seriously though, if Bloodborne wins, I have no problem with it. It is an atmospheric action game with brilliant soundtrack. I enjoyed playing it.

Witcher 3 is my favourite game of all time, for its characters, quest design, atmosphere, exploration, yes even the combat I found lot of fun (especially against bandits). But if it loses against Bloodborne, there are worse games it could lose to. This fight should have been the grand finale though.

If you're going to quote someone at least make it accurate. God of War is an action RPG.

I think part of the reason that many disagree with God of War being attached with the RPG genre is because the only thing it has similar to RPG's is the stats based gear.
The game is very linear, something RPG's are known to avoid.
God of War also does not offer classes, variety of builds, and multiple endings for quests or side quests, it does not have factions or any other core RPG element.
Its really just an Action Adventure game, it was hack and slash action game purely for the gore and button mashing combat, now Santa Monica changed the formula to Action Adventure because of the success of certain games.

1) God of War took a semi open world approach with Scandinavians Snowy areas because Skyrim was massive.
2) God of War took a over the shoulder type of 3D person perspective and Father-Son relationship story because The Last of Us was massive.
3) God of War took a dodge-skill based 3D combat with Bosses because Dark Souls was massive.

Its obvious to see how God of War was influenced by the Decade's most successful and influential titles.
God of War remains Action game in its core, but this new formula, makes it Action/Adventure, and they decided to add stats based elements for gear, because apparently this is the new norm, LOL.

It's so fucking close, why is this going until the 19th looolll

I'd rate your profile picture 4.5.

I love The Tatami Galaxy, its among my top favorite shows, its a master-class show, artistic masterpiece. Good Taste. 👏👍

God of War does have builds. Watch any of Smvr's videos or Gmg's and you can see that you can gear towards different playstyles. I'll give you most of the rest, but it does have quite a few rpg elements, such as levels on the enemies, ability to equip gear for specific resistances, skill trees, and ability to craft and upgrade gear. The lines are blurring more and more with developers continuing to add rpg elements to other genres of games. I'm ok with God of War being labeled an action adventure game, but honestly with the exception of the different classes, Diablo 3 doesn't do much more than God of War and its solidly considered an RPG. It's also linear with only one ending and the side quests are inconsequential.

Witcher 3 is gonna win this, it's taking the lead, as it's destined.

If you can't comprehend what The Witcher brought to the table in terms of writing and world building you are likely on drugs or 12 years old. Bloodborne is excellent but it's not on this level, the people who would vote for that game over Witcher 3 is the same people who would vote for Marvel Avengers over Seven Samurai.

IDK who is worst, the Witcher 3 fanboys or the Bloodborne fanboys. Depressing posts. It's not because you like a game more than other that make him a trash.

I guess God of War is a RPG, I mean, the game have RPG mechanics, no? Elements, resistence, increase skill damage, etc...
Much more of a Brawler than a rpg honestly. Even games like Yakuza have stuff like increasing skill damage, HP, developing different skill trees, etc. and nobody says its an RPG. I know that the "is it a RPG?" discussion is very polemic, but i usually consider a RPG (With the exception of JRPGs) to be a game that focuses on character building, be the the character as a person through story-choices, his powers or both.

I suppose there's some character building in GOW, but it isn't exactly all that complex and you're playing almost the same way no matter what build you decide on (if you even decide any build at all, you can just pick whatever and no prob). In that sense witcher isn't much different either, but unlike GOW it does allow for more complex story choices.

Witcher 3 combat isn't even that bad. Even though none of us can truly predict which ballet move Geralt will attempt to pull off when we try to make him swing his sword.

Is Yakuza have magic? Or an atributte to increase magic damage? Fire/Ice/Thunder element? Skill tree have nothing to do with this.

What so you could rig the voting with all your alts?
I don't have alts. But since it's nearly 50:50 i would love to see who has more fanboys, The Witcher or Sony/Bloodborne. If new account could vote from now on, i would put my money on >70:30 for Bloodborne.

So if Fallout1/2 or Wasteland do not have magic, are not RPGs?

Bloodborne.
I'm replaying it now (just need to beat Orphan of Kos).
It's such an amazing game.
I love the the atmosphere, the game design, the excelent combat and OST.

The Witcher 3 has a really good story, lore and world, but I don't like the combat/gameplay.

Bloodborne is easily the most accessible Souls game and it eases you in with Cleric Beast and gas coin. Surprised people complain about its difficulty.

Crazy take, but if we get so strict with the terms... Could The Witcher 3 really be considered a RPG? You are roleplaying as THE witcher, not as A witcher, so from the get go you are put inside a character with it's own traits and personality, instead of defining you own character like in Baldur's Gate, Fallout or whatever.

Of course you can take some decisions while being THE witcher, but all of those could fit inside the already established character.

Maybe it's an open world action adventure with a heavy emphasis on story?

BotW is the best RPG of all-time

yeah sure, imho Witcher 3 is overrated gameplay and writting wise.

Bloodborne is just far more niche

I voted Bloodborne but honestly I love them both equally. I can't believe we got both of these games in the same year. What a great thing.

People keep saying witcher 3 has had a huge impact on open world games. But it came out over 5 years ago and I'm scratching my head at what it is. I'm not criticising W3 in this regard, I just want to know what other people think that impact is and where we can see it? I played through all three witcher games and can't think of any innovation they brought to the rpg genre outside of just having high production values.

If this were purely down to the game and not the platform, pretty sure BB would be winning. Never mind though, both great games.

Does Fallout have magic? Or Cyberpunk? Or Disco Elysium? Being a RPG has nothing to do with Swords and Magic settings either.

This forum has such a good balance of users. There was also a poll comparing Gaming PC's to Next-Gen Consoles that showed the same thing.

Thank all you BB fans for the laughs. Your hot takes and salt made this thread delicious. While I voted for TW3, doesn't matter to me who wins.
