God of War 2018 PS5 patch incoming

I'm ready :messenger_neutral:

Bloodborne only when I got my hands on a PS5, which should be by the end of the year.

Sorry (not really) to all already PS5 owners.

really? I thought the game looked dated as fuck. Spiderman almost looks a gen ahead.

60 fps does look smooth though.
Good god, the phrase "almost a gen ahead" is thrown out there way too easily lol. Spiderman is a bit more advanced but honestly not much.

Nah man, looks great. Nice particles, lighting, nice detail in an open world... skin shaders and dead eyes are a bit weak. The rest? Solid stuff.

tried infamous today. huge difference when you select high res. and another huge difference when you unlock fps.
Game still looks on fire. 2014 !!!

If you have the game on disc, without any patches, the game is 60fps in whatever "4k" mode it has on Ps5's BC. I've been holding out on NG+ for a while...now the waiting has come to an end.

Man... HDR at nightime with all those neon lights in high res mode... good shit. HDR isn't often done right, but that's another notch in the game's belt.

These days everybody says 4K / 2160p but it doesn't mean native 4K anymore. Hardly anything is ever native 4K anymore. Here it's CB 4K, so reconstructed from lower than 4K.

Not necessarily true. There plenty of native 4k offerings, you just have to also opt out of 60 fps when choosing those modes (Valhalla, Fenyx, SMR, MM, Godfall, Demon's Souls) etc.

God damn, I played this on new game plus after getting my ps5. I might jump in to finish a few side quests to see how good it's going to look. It looked stunning at 1080p 60.

I'm fine with developers compromising resolution for framerate on consoles. This sadistic sick fantasy people have of 4K60 FPS on current gen consoles needs to go. The power isn't there. It will get even worse when actual next gen games arrive.

people just ask for 4k60 last gen.
This gen it will be 4k30 or 1440p 60 I guess. All checkerboarded to 4k anyway

OMG. FUCK YEAH!!!!

Horizon and Uncharted next please.

yes.

Oh man, I would replay Horizon and the Frozen Wilds completely again if it got the same treatment. Improve them loading speeds as well (not that they were a problem, but if doable, do it please).

Sweet, time to play it, I won't make the same mistake as last time though, its Story/Spaz difficulty for me from the start this time. Will increase it later when I have skills if it feels too easy, its how I played JFO and that increased my fun with the game by 10x.

Will they fix the HDR so the colour isn't batshit crazy? I was happy with the dynamic range increase but Pink Kratos + Samsung TV-demo bushes was stupid.

Why did it take so long? Seems an easy change, it's how the game ran on Pro with just the disk right?
Not quite, no.

And it probably took so long because most of the GoW team is hard at work on the sequel, whereas Sucker Punch is between games and Bend is likely in very early development on whatever they've got in the pipeline.

Has Guerrilla released a Horizon patch yet?

we are talking about ini tweak here.

Days Gone with the patch looks incredible, imagine God of War tomorrow. I'm leaking already.

Tomorrow is Division 2, Control UE and Destruction All Stars too. Maybe I should call sick 😃

I swear man. I halfway wish HDR waited until this generation just so it wouldn't taint any last gen games haha. So many games are either washed out, or it borks the SDR mode needlessly. Doesn't help that you needed to output in 1080p to get 4:4:4 chroma last gen in HDR.

And we're talking about allocating manpower when it was very likely needed elsewhere. Hence why you're not seeing a patch yet for Horizon and given ND has that MP project, probably why we haven't seen a patch for TLOU II or Uncharted 4/Lost Legacy yet either.

They'll do it when they can.

Now Bloodborne, TLG, Wipeout Omega Collection, TLOU2 and the Uncharted games, please.

What would they do for Wipeout: Omega Collection? I thought it was native 4K, locked 60 anyway, I guess they could downsample from above 4K? Maybe LOD tweaks, I haven't played for an extended time in ages though so maybe there are some glaring issues I've forgotten about. It probably does drop frames during explosions of alpha effects since everything does come to think of it.

I would love to see HDR added, but it sounds like too much extra work when the studio doesn't exist anymore, sadly.

if its 2160p then how is it also 4k checkerboarded?
Its just 2160p checkerboard. It technically is 2160p its not like its just native 1440p or something else, its just that its rendering a 2160p frame by checkerboarding the pixels, aka cheating by rendering what I think is half the pixels per frame or something idk.

But it is technically accurate to refer to it as 2160p checkerboard. They didn't say its native 2160p.

The PS4 Pro has the 2160p checkerboard 30 Hz mode (resolution) and the 1080p native uncapped frame rate mode (performance) that is around 45 FPS avg on PS4 Pro and locked 60 Hz on PS5.

The blog post update from Santa Monica Studio says its a single mode now on PS5 that combines the best of those 2 modes, so of course that means the higher res & higher frame rates of both modes combined. So 2160p checkerboard and 60 Hz.

I don't have 2.1 so I still have to do that if I want 444/Full range RGB.

I really wish they'd add 8-bit + dithering option to PS5 instead of forcing 10-bit + 422/Limited range, thats the default way it is on Windows 10 (You can lower chroma to 422 and then get 10-bit) when you have HDMI 2.0b and I prefer having 444/Full RGB range over true 10-bit. Most of the time 10-bit just shows more banding over 8-bit+dithering ime.

Vincent Teoh was saying that Spiderman: MM actually has a curbed brightness range in 10-bit + 422, which I didn't even know was an issue. I thought chroma subsampling affected the rendering of very fine details, not the actual brightness range of the image.

About as much chance of Sony adding that as 1440p support though ha.

But doesn't HDR10 require 10 bit color? 8 bit is SDR right?

Kuranghi Kuranghi 120fps support would be it. I mean, that's cool, it would help in getting to higher zones in zone mode!

Oh yeah ofc! Totally game changing for a racing game in general but even more so for WO, zone mode indeed. Hopefully I can get 1440p support to make that a reality on my old TV since I can't do 4K120 on it.

SUB. PHANTOM.

Same, my A8h is 2.0. Thankfully the upscaling works wonders even when downsampling then scaling back up.

But yeah 422 is disgusting.

Yeah its 2160p, just blocks of pixels (perhaps in a checkboard pattern :pie_thinking: ) are rendered every other frame, and interpolated together in motion. So a completely still scene would be a legit 4k image, but in motion only half of any single frame is a new image.

lol. Maybe.

Just made this gif by comparing the 30 fps ps4 version of spiderman with the 60 fps pro version of Infamous. Looks like a massive difference.

Yeah I guess its like for a 60 FPS game, 30 of the frames are around 50% of the pixels of 2160p (or sometimes more than 50% like all the vertical pixels but half the horizontal pixels, so like 1920x2160, or diff stuff like that) and then the other 30 frames are the other pixels, so by combining them together it looks like 2160p to the players eye on screen. I think thats how I read it all works.

But yeah there can be the motion artifacts with fast moving scenes. Not perfect but a solid performance saver.
