Horizon: Forbidden West | Gameplay Reveal Trailer

Wasnt really impressive IMO.
Just looked like a bit better looking PS4 Pro game.
Gameplay looked janky aswell.

And yeah.. 30fps? I thought we are over that...

I know it's a cross-gen game but it would be better if it were a cross-platform game right?

 
Kinda upset that hair and other objects still clip through stuff on next gen

Game looks awesome and as a cross gen game MS and 343 should be ashamed of themselves. This is how you do a gameplay debut. Show amazing graphics and good gameplay. Sony studios sure know how to wow the customer. Seems like the Coalition, Ninja Theory, and Rare knows how to wow people graphically.
 
Fixed for context, since we still have to see what the wizards at Ninja Theory will bring with Hellblade 2. From the rest of other developers? I truly don't know.
They seem a bit behind. I mean they got around to showing time lapsed clouds, but does that really inspire confidence compared to what Guerrilla was showing here, or Insomniac with Ratchet? Seriously, releasing a "well, here our the clouds!" tweet doesn't seem that smart in retrospect.
 
Graphics look amazing, the gameplay seems good, nothing particularly exciting about it. I was hoping for a release date, even if they are in fact planning for it to be a 2022 game.
 
Shit looked pretty insane. The gameplay looked almost CGI-like in parts.

Wasn't a huge fan of the first game but this one is already looking like more fun.
 
This seems to look better than even the 4k stream. Is there post processing done here? That scene where she is above the water almost looks "real" like you're looking at something with a real physical presence. I didn't get that feeling from the stream, even though I thought it looked well done.

Nope. Just the grainy/noisy side effect of making a lossy animated gif to keep a 'reasonable size'.
 
The games not linear. The trailer most certainly was.

the open world it's going to probably suck just like the first one. dead world. braindead npcs. horrible side quests. bad story and dialogue. but it's fine that's not what people are looking for.

they like killing giant robots with bow and arrow and beautiful vistas and guerilla will deliver. everything else is just an extra.

Exactly. I played all Ninja Theory games and no one is a graphic showcase, but now people are considering them like the Naughty Dog of Microsoft, and only because that fake prerendered video that I don't understand why, people assumed it was real time.

I want to play Hellblade 2, but this graphical pressure above their shoulders can only end in disappointment.

On a serious note after playing the first game you can approach a mission multiple ways. Sometimes it's more linear and other times it's more open. But without playing through the segment yourself you can't tell how open or linear it is.

Hopefully now that Herman rules the roost he can persuade Jim to give him budget to increase the size of Guerrilla which would allow them to work on multiple projects concurrently.
 
Can't get over the fact this is a cross-gen game. This game has no businesses looking this good for a cross-gen title.

Dump the PS4. Give Guerilla the keys to the PS5 kingdom and I'll start slowly unzipping my pants.
 
I think it looks great. The first game looked incredible for PS4, so I think that's probably why I'm not too blown away though. Maybe it's that "diminishing return" thing or being too spoiled.

I really liked the hair in the water, kinda frizzling - but swimming / coming out felt like the hair's waterproof & pretty weightless considering it's all wet. But seeing all that detail, really impressive stuff.
 
Very nice!.......I honestly don't need this game to reinvent the wheel,the first game for a new IP did so many great things that some new machines and abilities are pretty much all I need.I loved the sandbox nature of the combat in the first one,it never got old to me....some new gadgets to use and some new machnes to use them on and I'm good to go!

These companies shine a spotlight on the aspects of their games they're proudest of. It's like a dating profile for games. "Look at my best attributes. We're not going to focus on anything that I'm not proud of."

As of right now, Guerilla Games decided to showcase the game using linear, scripted level and mission design. It was a very hand holdy debut in my opinion. They think showcasing Forbidden West that way will get fans most excited.

THIS DOES NOT MEAN that Forbidden Wests open world will be bad. It might be the greatest open world ever made. It might be fantastic. It's simply a red flag (for me) that they didn't show us anything in terms of open world design.

Maybe that open world trailer comes out in a few months. I'm merely noticing what Guerilla decided to highlight, and what they chose to ignore for their big marketing debut.

Biggest worry...

They decided to wow everyone with linear cramped level design. (This is the part where we want you to override this mount, so we'll place a mount right next to red grass and we'll have Aloy talk about wanting to override the mount by the red grass).

Doesn't bode well for kick ass open world gameplay.

I love being wrong though so we'll see.

The original had some sort-of sectioned out areas for a more cinematic, level-style gameplay, like the jungle bit where you find the hades sphere.

This by itself doesn't necessarily imply a change of direction, we'll need to see more.

You were expecting them to show how Aloy can go play darts at the local tavern, put decals on her mount and have the freedom to choose which quest market to go to first I guess
 
Vegetation, apart from the ones to hide, not properly reacting (again) to player is the most disappointing for me. I continue not understanding how Zelda BOTW on Switch has better physics than Horizon 2 in PS5.

It looks super nice, but the more fidelity increases the more you notice the things there are missing. Like for example, those raptors must weight half a ton and yet they walk on sand as if it was concrete - they neither sink their feet on it, neither kick up sand nor have it get stuck on their feet.

I think you nail it here.

I simply went into the presentation hoping to see certain things. I wanted them to talk about how they blew out the world to make it feel more alive and to give the player more meaningful choices.

Just because I didn't get that doesn't mean it's not there. It does set off a bit of skepticism from me though

And again, these are just my preferences. A lot of people really dug what they saw.
 
Not fond of the style, which is a bit too cartoonish for my tastes. I know you can't expect to see much ray tracing or complex illumination in such a sunny and colorful game, but comparing to what Kojima did with the same engine using a more realistic palette, I'm not impressed. It's not bad for a cross-gen game though.
