Switch 2 physical game box size increases about 40%

I don't believe this rumor. It would cost more and what would be the point of the extra space.

If anything they should be smaller. Make them the same size as the carts to save space and money

Sounds more like some random French retailer's website has a "default value" for dimensions, and for physical media it's set to the most common size (same size as PS4/PS5/Blurays) and crazy internet people are blowing things out of proportion, like usual.

Makes sense to me. The shelf space in retail for Nintendo is too noisy and dense with the small boxes. Nothing is able to stand out. This is designed to help and it will.

And I'm glad Nintendo is making a real effort in the physical space. That alone justifies a Switch 2 launch day purchase for me.

To be fair, they (Nintendo) might want to avoid the Grandmas/Grandpas buying their grandchildren the "wrong version" of Switch games lol.

This.

People don't remember the Wii U, but people were buying Wii U games thinking they'd play on their Wii.

Hell, I saw a Best Buy employee telling an old lady that she could do that.

Box art becoming bigger is a waste of space and money especially if all you get is one small game cart.

Why can't Nintendo go the 3DS box art route? I'm pretty sure they would be saving a lot money if they go way smaller. Who is actually going to look and admire their game box art every day?

The guide/instruction book that used to come with the game are long gone. So there is no need for the giant box art case if it only going to come with a tiny cart.

That sucks though. I'd have hoped they'd get smaller. Current Switch cases are already waaay too big for what's included.

We're gonna need Mr Gerstmann to do a taste test update when the first batch of Switch 2 cartridges drop.

Atleast bring some ilustrations or anything cool to ocupy that space, take care of the physical presentation, it's fucking 80€ we're paying.

On the one hand it seems silly but then again maybe they want to help underscore that it's a new system (not Switch Pro, honest!) with new game cases.

And then again, seems silly but if they got smaller, they might worry the perception will be that Switch 2 games are "smaller" than Switch games. It could be a real consideration, as dumb as it sounds. The idea being that 2=bigger and better and to echo that in all the branding...but I could be reading too deep into it.

Yes, this is exactly what's going on, silly as it sounds. It's all about how the boxes will be perceived by a low information consumer.

In addition to making it easier for parents/grandparents to tell Switch and Switch 2 games apart at first glance, I could see Nintendo doing this because many people see bigger as better. There's the added benefit of more shelf space being taken up in stores, leading to a larger overall presence.

Just seems like a stupid thing if true that just costs them more money and resources to do for no good reason meaning it's probably not.

This bodes well, it means they will include manuals and extras, right? Right?

Just as Nintendo bought lots of old Tegra chips for Switch maybe they bought lots of old unsold PS4 cases!

Because smaller = cheaper in the minds of consumers.

Switch 2 games will be $70, maybe they want the box to look like other $70 boxes.

Or it's just this.

I think it's a deliberate ploy to take up more shelf space now that Xbox (and soon Playstation) are retreating away from physical games.

I would prefer Nintendo reduce the box size to data cartridge case.

I dig it if it's additional portable case that comes with the game.... but won't fly for the retail. Too easy to steal or misplace... unless they come with those impossible to cut plastic outer case...

(hate these type of packaging..)

Imagine if it came like this. lol..

Switch 2 doesn't play CDs.

I'm talking about the size of the case in proportion to the game CD/DVD/Cartridge. It's a bit unnecessary to have a large case like the Switch when you can fit 6-8 Switch cartridges in there. Make it the same size as the DS cases at least.

Actually I think these cases are inflated with nitrogen gas to prevent spoilage and to prevent the game cards from getting crunched during shipping

Reading Ask Iwata reveals that sometimes Nintendo makes these decisions so that mom can make the correct purchase.

They got a bargain price from a Chinese factory.

That literally caused toybiz to make giant action figures in the 90s
Better to go to the extreme:

I actually think these 2 together would be perfect,
cardboard sleeve for the anti-theft and the a nice actual inner case

Also the reason to change packaging is actually for the employees, easier to stock shelves correctly

I knew what you meant. I was being a smartass.

And I bet you could fit 24 Switch cartridges easily in a single case, seeing as there is no instruction booklets on the left side.

Should be digital only, anyone who buys cartridges for a handheld is a failing the IQ test, who want's to swap games on a plane/bus/train/while out and about? if you don't play it while travelling or away from home, then you failed the IQ test for paying all that money for a system that's not even as powerful as a PS4 Pro.

They should really cut the size in half with nice foldout instructions. Small and cute, stacks nicely. However I'm sure someone made the argument if the boxes are larger the retailers will have to make decision on what to put on shelves which might allow Nintendo to capture more retail space. My guess is next gen high street will be only Nintendo, then competitors will cry why is it still selling millions. Because you let it dumbass.

People that resell their games.

You still fail the IQ test, just subscribe to PS+ Premium or Gamepass Ultimate, everything comes eventually at least you're supporting the industry even through a flawed model.
The irony of telling people they fail the IQ test when you can't even figure out this thread was on about switch 2 game cases, What's been a gamepass/PS+ rental peasant got to do with this topic? Yes lets pay monthly to rent games instead of owning them, really big brain there aren't you LOLOL
