Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 ≼| OT |≽ La Belle Fantaisie

Played a little bit more.
  • Dodge/parry system sucks. No good indication of when to do it.
  • QTEs during attacks suck.
  • Getting big "generic JRPG from 2009" vibes so far.
  • Camera is weird. The FOV feels wrong for some reason.
EDIT: Uninstalled after about two hours. Combat is just garbage.

Where I come from we have a name for this:

Skill issue. :)

You're supposed to do it as the attack is hitting. There are tons of visual and audio cues. I could dodge many of the attacks with my eyes closed by just listenting. maybe you're trying to parry, the window is tighter

I'm gonna have to join the crew of people praising the OST, this and Stellar Blade have been nice surprises this gen.

Who here enjoys seeing fire stacks deal 1mil+ damage per tick, anyone?

Totally agree it's really bad. Full action or full turn-based would be much preferred to whatever this is for me. Thankfully you can turn off the offensive QTEs, not sure how it's interesting to hit the same QTE 5000 times.

I am kind of just powering through this for the music and hoping the story improves for me. I have literally no idea how this has a 92 on MC. The underdog marketing and price point did wonders for it.

Tbh it isn't that bad, it just slightly worse then the Quality Mode
Although people tend to say performance mode is "better in motion" which is probably my biggest gripe because that's not always the case.
It looks a blurry vaseline mess in motion if the resolution is lower or upscaled.
If the resolution was the same or higher it would be a different story.
But this isn't the case here, but it's not bad.

I honestly don't think there's much improvement on Pro, so if it looks similar then it's better then most.
Although this game can go from Sharp(main gameplay) to blurry (world map) and that's on Pro Quality ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Still a nice looking game though.
thats a problem of Quality mode, i m pretty sure that on Performance most depth of field is disable and thats why i m playing on perf.

A rage quit not even 2 hours into the game. I love that this game broke you lol

Burn is GOAT in this game…everything just melts to it (over time…as it should be).

Lune is a complete fucking badass. I love her Hell skill 😈

Yeah not to mention the awesome, cheap Critical Burn picto you get early on (+25 crit chance vs burning enemies) and Maelle's early abilities to give any enemy a weakness to fire and enter virtuoso vs. burning enemies.

For anyone struggling in the early game, I can't recommend putting almost all of your points into Vitality enough. Having over 1k HP is a game changer and let's you take more hits, which means more practice at parrying. Honestly, the other stats don't seem to do that much in comparison to Vitality.

Finished Act 1. this game man. What a breath of fresh air.

Who are these guys? Where did they come from? I hear they are ex ubisoft devs but how did they get so good at mocap, acting, directing and cinematography. the storytelling is phenomenal. AC shadows has literal garbage storytelling. Same goes for Avatar and Star Wars outlaws. this is almost ND level, and maybe even better. Just fantastic stuff.

I think people need to realize that perfect parries along with the counter are like the ultimate attacks. You can't expect to just stomp through the game like that until you master it.
Besides you can't even parry everything as you progress through the game as they introduce new attacks. Jump actually has a cue and so does the one you get at the start of act 2 (with the screen effect). They very intentionally made the enemy animations have different timing, wind ups, fake outs, etc. It forces you to watch what's happening on screen. It's simple but brilliant game design.

You absolutely can use different pictos, expand your lumin pool and allocate your stats in a way where you can just take hits if you want to play the game like that. There are Pictos the completely facilitate that. You can basically customize every skill/action in combat with pictos. There's shell buff, speed buff, attack buff skills, etc.

Didn't you guys play final fantasy 9 it's basically the same.
Wondered if anyone else would make that connection. Was my first thought.

This game continues to slap - still not beat act one. Savouring it like a fine wine and being continually blown away by how it gets everything right - like every tedious design trope, they avoid.

Julien Tiny Head is a real piece of shit. Giving a dude 2 identical moves, except in one of them he feints, is pure evil.

I hope there isn't much more of that going forward.

Definitely a git gud situation here

I just listened to the dev interview that cohhcarnage did. Most of them are actual newbies and this is their first ever game... I mean they found the composer on fucking soundcloud and this is his first game project. Kinda insane

I really hope the industry is getting the right message from this success story. We don't need expedition 33 game copies. We need expedition 33 project management copies haha.

I went into the game 100% blind and I also haven't read anything in the OT and will continue not doing so to ensure I dont get spoiled on anything. I do plan on going back and browsing the thread once I complete the game to see what other people thought and talked about though!

But I did want to at least drop in and say I'm currently around 20 hours in and am absolutely loving nearly every aspect of the game. Combat, music, voice work and story are all superb. The subtle movement or expressions during scenes add so much personality to the characters.

The only I don't like is the lack of tracking of special enemies/bosses in a zone. Just something like "2/3 chroma" or something when hovering over the zone. If it becomes available at endgame then no problem but if not endgame cleanup might be a slog.

Lune is best girl. My favorite party member and she doesn't leave for anyone. Dropping massive lightning crits on mother fuckers heads is endlessly entertaining and I find myself doing the hand motions myself during her attacks.

Started this in earnest today. Liking it so far but have some nitpicks as well.

Love the music, its mixing is way too fucking loud. Charlie Cox sounds like he's really bored delivering most of his lines so far. The graphics are also soft even in Quality mode.

But as a new studio's first game ... it is a *VERY* confident project. Good on them.

Yeah. Gestral Beach was designed by a sadist.
Oh yeah that was diabolical, also the paint frame level, I was just constantly falling just trying to turn, getting stuck on bits of wood while trying to jump, and then that roll when you fall from height onto a small platform. Argggh. Glad they are optional.

Reminds me of Shadow hearts. I will definitely get this game for Ps5 this year.

Wasn't sure if I'd be into this game considering I've played little of the genre but I was immediately hooked within the first 20 minutes and I'm starting to master the parry/dodge system. I'm only four hours in but this is an excellent game, and I love the soundtrack.

"ND Level" seems insulting to this game after the garbage soap opera script ND gave TLoU2. This here is leagues better from a writing standpoint and the cinematography is very close.

i been doing 2 might and 1 pt each level to whatever i feel like,
people been saying to just glass cannon everything, but honestly, i'm just not that good at that. so i expect to be taking hits a good amt of the time.

Just beat this games super boss, felt nice!

I've fallen way behind everyone else. My son and I said we would prestige Space Marine 2 so I'm sticking to that. I've played some E33 and love what I've played, but man.....reading the comments, I can tell there is some depth in this game that I haven't scratched the surface on. Hopefully this weekend I'll be able to immerse myself in this one.
