Nintendo Switch 2 |OT| Switch 2 Nintendo, because now we're playing with power

Just got the Switch 2 yestderday, finally able to play Age of Calamity with an acceptable fps! Hopefully they will release a high res 60fps patch, which the console should be capable of.

Anyways, having the OG Switch since launch and held out buying the OLED model, the Switch 2 is such a perfect "Switch pro" that I was looking for.

I highly disagree, to me it's huge leap over original Switch game's performance.

I don't understand how anyone can just call this just Switch pro.

The leap is substantialy greater than PS3 to PS4, I don't recall any PS3 open world game running at 60fps on PS4 for eg

To be fair I've only played BotW and Mario Odyssey so I'll not say more until I've played more.

He's not alone, but his expectations of hardware leaps and pricing are out of touch with what we've seen for a while now.
I think we're coming up against the limits of physics with hardware improvements these days more so than the limits of innovation, and Moore's Law is thoroughly dead, so yeah, I think from here on out, raster improvements are always going to be a little underwhelming for any hardware leaps and that the majority of improvements in rendering will be in the realms of software rather than hardware, unfortunately.

Loving the console to bits. And not sure if you guys noticed it has ALLM in the display settings. Auto Low Latency Mode. This must be a result of their partnership with Nvidia. Also the e-Shop is so zippy now.

I think there is still some juice but it takes longer and longer to get there and there are new techniques discovered the HW can accelerate (Nintendo could have pushed for newer component and eat a tiny bit of their profit margins too), but at some point we will have to see resources reallocated… maybe a drop in raster performance (to name a thing at random) to spend more resources on ray tracing for example and/or AI.

Both of them are an improvement. I would not be surprised if they have a webview engine always loaded and pre-cache some of the eShop now, but it is faster.

ALLM is nice to see, automatically pushing the TV in Game Mode if available, but not new all in all. Still nice to have, would have much rather get VRR when docked and 4K@120 Hz output though.

Played the opening hour of Hogwarts Legacy last night. The environments look legitimately beautiful on the Switch 2, and the lighting, level of detail, and especially clothing effects are pretty impressive. Some of the characters' faces have uncanny valley vibes though, and I noticed some weird aliasing or artifacting or something around their hair. I haven't played this on other platforms, so not sure if it's a Switch 2 thing. It's also a huge nitpick that most people probably wouldn't notice.

I haven't really gotten to explore the open world yet, since I only played the introductory sequence prior to your arrival at Hogwarts.

My first impression is that the hardware feels incredibly nice, almost Apple-esque in its fit and finish. The clicks, the smoothness of the analog sticks, the way the joy cons just snap into place is all wonderful. Screen looks brilliant and I love the hardware from top to bottom.

It terrible. I suggest getting a 20,000mAh portable charger.

This will sound...silly but, how do you manage a power bank while gaming ? I mean, do you just have the thing hanging from the console ? Can't imagine it being comfortable/user friendly while on the go - honest question btw...

Is there a specific...ahem..."technique" as to not have the whole thing being (incredibly) uncomfortable ?

You could buy a longer cable so it's not just hanging off.

Too bad that people can see the quality of black levels and washed out colours if you use HDR in portable mode (one of the Reddit screens has an OG Switch in a completely different area of the game and the OLED Switch does not seem at all with max brightness and yet you can see the effect of fake HDR in portable mode).

MKW with mostly bright full of light scenes is also perhaps the area where the LCD loses less ground vs OLED too… so the most flattering comparison you can find.

OLED with good HDR and 120 Hz or more exist and it is a closed box console, Nintendo could give developers control of the screen refresh rate so VRR would not be needed (see Steam Deck that gives it to users).
People can see that. That isnt the point. The point is that just being oled doesnt tell you the full story. Oled is always better as led. But displays is not only about black levels.

Keep in mind i'm comparing this to switch oled. Not to other oled handhelds. But still, i prefer a hdr + vrr + 1080p + 120 hz led screen over my oled steamdeck display. And not even close.

Started playing cyberpunk last night. Wow. Admittedly I never played it on more powerful hardware, but to my eyes it looks absolutely incredible. I honestly don't care if graphics/performance ever get better than this. I hardly see the point. Absolutely amazing.

I am not sure if people realise how much screen size affects battery life. Unfortunately battery innovation has been slow and the keep the weight down I dont see what else they could do than have a battery that last a couple of hours.

usually bigger screen means higher battery life because they can fit in more battery for same thinness ala iPhones.

But battery life is roughly as expected. 120hz and 1080p is going to consume more battery. That's twice the possible frames and over twice the pixels.

SteamDeck OLED is an HDR display and having the ability to handle contrast and dark areas well.

Switch 2's HDR problem is that it has neither OLED true blacks nor any dimming zones concept whatsoever so instead of just making highlights brighter everything does get a bit brighter resulting in a more washed up image than it should have. 450 nits also is quite low for peak brightness in an HDR display too.
HDR with an backlit or edge lit LCD display and no dimming zones is a bit of a marketing gimmick in handheld mode.

OLED has a lower battery impact ;). Also, manufacturing the SoC with a more modern manufacturing process instead of an optimised old 10 nm one would have increased battery life (but it would have required finalising the chip a bit later than Nintendo did).

Hey guys, wanna see what being a fanboy "normie" really looks like ?

Man, the actual "bury your head in the sand" thing, the excuses, the "lol who plays more than 2 hours you're a no-lifer", the "just buy a power bank bro" are a sight to behold, the cope is just really something else...

TLDNR : we have it good in here lads, never again complain about fanboyism, there's always WAY worse...😉

It's really stupid and took me several minutes to figure this out. Or maybe I'm stupid lol

So in the controller setting I was trying to find new controllers... but that never worked. What I actually had to do was go into Change Grip/Order and that's where my SN30 Pro finally showed up,
That's where I looked - nothing 🤔 (I followed the guide on their homepage)

I am sure you know better than the hundreds of top paid people working at Nintendo.

I know it wouldn't be a super popular option but did anyone try "Survival Kids"? Looks like it might be decent fun co-op with my boys but no idea if it's light on content or dumb or not worth the price, etc.

This is the only problem with no early systems / review copies going out, obviously no doubt Mario Kart is gonna be good but no idea about these smaller games (Bravely Default another one)

I really think something is up with the fan curve once switch 2 docks.

The fan speeds are dialed waaaaay down in docked. Played for a long time today and every time I undock the console mid game it instantly starts dumping heat like crazy. Mind you I dont think the switch 2, at least thus far, was getting worryingly warm or anything, but I do think its probably beneficial for Nintendo to update this in a patch.

seems overheating is an issue and we're all hoping a firmware update to dock can solve it. Some have reported crashes mid GP MKW here already.

Apologies if this has already been asked a million times in this thread, but can anyone recommend a good grip for handheld mode?

The OG Switch used to make my hands cramp a bit after an extended session of handheld play, but I used to take that as a sign that it was time for me to take a break, lol. However, my right hand started cramping almost immediately today after starting Mario Kart World. I thought the bigger joy-cons would be more comfortable, but something about the button placement makes it painful for me to hold down A while hovering another finger over ZR. Anyway, rather than try to hold it differently, I think it's time for me to finally break down and get a grip.

Update: I just bought a pair of compression gloves instead. It sucks to be an old man.

I just installed the game in a emulator and I am running it at 8k with ultra shadows, higher quality fog, and huge draw distance lol. This doesn't look that impressive to me in comparison

I love pc gaming man

That being said is definitely a big improvement over the original switch

Topher Topher can't find it now, but you had a post talking about wanting a grip that can dock?

I have the Skull and Co NeoGrip and I have confirmed that it is dockable. That one has 3 pairs of different grips to suit your style and is pretty well-designed too!

I bought the original Switch version for my wife and she has only just started is a week ago and has hardly done anything. I only paid £15 off e-bay. I then downloaded the Switch 2 version for only £8.49. Can't wait to see this in action.

I mean what he is saying is true, but it also would have been more expensive and Nintendo chose to make choices based on cost which is completely normal.
Not necessarily. Also better or worse mean little without knowing to what degree. And it's not just pure cost but what you get for the price. I mean the S2 lcd is 120hz/VRR/higher res/bigger size compared to the Switch OLED. Maybe the LCD was actually more $$$? Maybe same price? Which one does one choose if they were the same price?
