Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

I remember when people were being silly and said Ghost 1 looked like a PS5 game when it was first shown, yet here we are with PS5 exclusive Ghost 2 and it still doesn't look like a PS5 game, lol. Peak timeline.

Damn, from a technical standpoint, Yotei looks barely better than Tsushima, that's crazy. The artstyle is not enough this time around.

Finally watched the stream: it looks exactly like the first one; that is, it now looks very dated: geometry, foliage, characters, animations. Everything screams last-gen (and a b-tier last-gen).

Scenery and style are cool, but damn. Those rocks and those trees really stand out in a bad way.

The textures still look so bad, that was my main gripe with the first game but you'd assume they'd fix that with much more powerful hardware. Looks like a late PS4 game.

At best it (Ghost Of Yotei) largely looks about 10% better than the first game on PS4 Pro, but with a nice mountain in the background. Art style is still nice (though there's something less distinctive about it here), but technically they're just straight-up not trying anymore:

Shadows suck, anisotropic filtering is awful, textures range from great to trash, DoF is bad, no evidence of RT in any form, lighting is horribly flat in most shots with only the well-lined up, well-lit landscape shots looking nice.

Some character models are moderately better (but still very weak overall), assets look the same as the first game (wouldn't be surprised if a lot of stuff is reused with no upgrade). Rocks, trees and main ground detail are terrible.

Near-field detail is hit and miss, far-field is nice but that's expected (likely some swapped-in impostors) and mid-field detail is awful if it's not covered with some form of grass or fog. Additional FX are lacklustre.

Generally nice looking sure, but in the sense of a PS4 game; and likely in GIFs. We're five years into this gen, this is a current-gen exclusive, the first game was very successful, they've had five years to make this and this is a Sony first party title, which used to mean something. I expect much better. Either they weren't afforded the appropriate resources, they horribly squandered them or they just don't care.

If GoT released early in the PS4 lifespan in the same form rather than at the end and this released near the end of the gen looking like this on PS4 Pro, then what I'm seeing here would still be disappointing in terms of intra-generational leaps. There's absolutely nothing technically-impressive about it as a PS5 game.

If I'm buying a new console (that's still going for a premium >60% of the way into the gen, or even worse, springing for the ridiculously-marked up Pro at $699), then it's reasonable to expect a far more significant bump up in the technical presentation.

I really hope this whole period of disappointment is contained in the PS5 gen and next gen Sony's entire first/second party roster start pushing things again. Otherwise I'm gonna lose interest. Gameplay may be king, but in many titles I need a whole bunch of stuff beside it too; and let's be honest, few are really pushing gameplay much either, nor interactivity, simulation and functionally interesting worlds that really push boundaries.

Frankly, I'm surprised this isn't on PS4. Even this far in.

Definitely looks like a cross gen game that should have released 3 years ago. ^^

Besides Forbidden west, I can't think of a single PS game sequel that has lived up to the hype visually. PS studios have fallen off so bad. To think that just 5 years ago, they were at the forefront of visual fidelity.

Rift Apart is a proper current gen game and best looking Sony game this gen. The only Sony game that was built from ground up for this gen.

Y'all bitch and moan and then will buy Ghost 2 at full price and let Sony continue their bullsh*t. Don't complain if you're part of the problem.

The game looks extremely safe and iterative, this may be the first sony game i skip at launch in a long time...

Like i didn't even had the strenght of watching the entire 20 min, i skipped here and there, this is how "boring" and safe it looks.

And they still use these fucking precanned death animations with no ragdoll in 2025, fuck off.

bro never seen a wet rock
From the dude who usually think that appreciating extremely detailed textures in a graphic fidelity topic is retarded, i'll take that as a compliment:messenger_kissing_smiling:

What is you excuse for the other poor rocks in the remaining 99% of the trailer?

Lemme guess, dry rocks are "over detailed" like hellblade 2?
you are used to overdetailed graphics probably.
Just because you can make texture sharper, does not always mean you should.
I finished got and acs this year. one got way sharper textures than the other.
But got looks incredibly impressive at times despite being way lower fidelity.

At this point I've decided I wont support this directly with my dollar as they've ultimately failed to provide something worthy of the console upgrade. If I really get the itch to play it I'll buy it on eBay and then sell it again on there once done.

But frankly, I'm losing interest in most of these games and probably won't bother at this point.

The sdf is already trying to spin and gaslight people into thinking this look spectacular, just another day in the office.
You'll get "it's fine", "the art style is the important thing", "why are you being picky bro, just enjoy the game", "graphics aren't the most important thing" (after saying the graphics look great). All completely ignoring the fact that the first game already had that art style on a console with 12-18% of the effective power and for some reason we bought a new console for this to look basically the same.

I mean, there's gotta be a relative improvement no matter how good it already looked otherwise the new gen is basically pointless.

Maybe 60fps is a nice win for some, but if I choose to play the 30/40fps mode then I expect the relative bump over the 30fps mode on the predecessor, and small resolution bumps are just completely unexciting.

So rocks in real life should not be used as a reference point for rocks in games because they are over detailed? What kind of brain thinking is going on with your brain rofif

Then you realize that hfw:

has a 60 fps mode
looks better
it's a 3 years old crossgen

They really can't win this one.

This guy... Lol. Sony are probably not even paying you, so it's sad that you do this shilling for free.

what?
They can if you are going for that.
But I would wager... these rocks look sleek enough.
You clearly have not been outside for some time

Must be so sad to be this miserable and complaining on the internet about a smooth rock lol. get real

I don't get why you are in a graphics thread always complaining about people dissing Sony exclusive games, unless you're here to shill and gaslight. Like dude, this is a thread about next gen visuals, yet you complain about people wanting next gen visuals. 😁🤷

Bro those are paved and smoothed rock so to be comfortable for the little pigeons claws to pitter patter.

The mental gymnastics you will go through to defend Sony is some next level shit which I've always admired

Because I probably enjoy games graphics more than most of you. I take hundreds of screenshots in every game. Always did that.
The point is to enjoy graphics. Not … not enjoy them.

Everyone and their grandmother knows that even the best looking games can have a smoothe rock. Not something anyone should focus on. Crisis had ton of these …

Why are taking photographs with Nokia 3310 and how is that relevant to 4K PS5 games?

First dude that tells me that i can't call some devs lazy is gonna get laughed out of this topic.

It's largely not about laziness though and it's stupid to keep suggesting that that's what the issue is. It's how the studio uses their budget, level of talent on the team, strength of leadership, cohesive team vision/culture, etc.. etc.. etc..

If anything it's lazy to suggest that all these issues are just due to individual employees being lazy.
