After this past week and with so many people cancelling their Gamepass subscriptions after price hikes, certain chains abandoning Xbox, rumors about them possibly even turning into a 3rd party publisher only (unconfirmed rumor), where do you stand as an Xbox console user?

This topic is mostly about Xbox console users only. If you play in multiple platforms this doesnt affect you as much.

The most obvious choice is going to PC but many people do prefer to be console players so i got curious.

Where do you guys stand?

Or just have multiple consoles. If Xbox folded, I'll still be playing games, if they don't, I'll still play games on an Xbox.
With this many games on one ecosystem, I can't necessarily just jump to the next per say, nor do I want to. Xbox has always offer something Nintendo and Sony hasn't, which is power and choice.

The only generation I can remember where the Xbox hardware was noticeably weaker was the Xbox One generation. At the same time, Xbox(and Microsoft) has always been big proponents of backwards compatibility on their hardware which I appreciate.

This wasn't the reason I gave up on Xbox- introducing gamepass and seeing 1st party games not exclusive made me jump off Xbox years ago. Their strategy was shit and still is.

It's been a terrible few weeks for Xbox

- Forza Horizon 6 announced for PS5
- Microsoft Flight Simulator announced for PS5
- Console big price increase
- Gamepass huge price increase

I've stated in a previous thread that if Xbox were to fold, I'll give up gaming.

My stance on that hasn't changed.
You haven't thought about moving over to PC?
It's a very smooth transition. Same account, achievements, controller, button layout, plus cross progression and game purchases on some games, and Gamepass is there.

I have a feeling that the next Xbox is either gonna be a pc console hybrid that will help transition much of the player base to pc

Given that Microsoft owns Windows and Windows is without a doubt the most popular OS to game on, this does to some extent seem inevitable

I have a PC, entry level though.

It's honestly too expensive.

I get that, I have some stuff invested in Sony's catalog and Nintendo. I'm honestly not too worried though. I also don't think they stop producing consoles either. They got at least another generation in them.

Also if those cancellations are massive enough, they will have to respond to it eventually and act accordingly. Businesses hate losing money but they also hate losing more money after making a dumb decision.

I have a PS5 and I'm really happy with it. Though I have been thinking about the PS5 Pro, especially if GTA 6 and all other games are going to look a lot better on it.

Not convinced yet.

These are my current PC specs.

On par with current console prices?
You could upgrade your GPU + CPU and beat one for similar prices likely, or at least when you factor in PC games via GOG Steam etc cost a fraction of the price as they do on console

This is assuming ps5 pro prices and assuming next gen consoles will be similar or more expensive

ChatGPT recommended this path

  • GPU: Radeon RX 7800 XT (new ≈ $499, used ≈ $399–$450).
  • CPU: Drop-in Ryzen 5 5600 (AM4, ≈ $120–$140 new). Big uplift over your 2600; works on many ASUS A320 boards after a BIOS update.

Yeah it can be expensive but could also last longer than any console and can be upgraded in parts when needed.
Check out Playnite for a controller-focused UI able to automatically add Steam and Gamepass games in one menu. Makes it feel like a console.

If it is true that Xbox will eventually go hybrid/OEM, you will go "PC" eventually even if you stay with Xbox. You might as well ride it out if you are that locked to the ecosystem. I just hope they find a way to bring all Xbox games over.

I've 450+ owned games on Xbox, I won't go. I agree that MS is fucking up greatly, but come on, the Xboxes aren't dead, they are functionnal, I have hundreds of games to play, they'll keep release games for years... And I wanna play my games so yeah I'll keep playing them... People are exagerating right now, gamepass rising prices by 9€ = I can't play any Xbox games anymore, Forza 6 releasing on PS5 makes it unplayable on Xbox... nah, come on !

Nah, I'm fine. I'll keep playing on Xbox and buying new hardware if it comes out. PC and Switch get most of my game time so if Xbox dies I'll just spend more time on those.

Nope! I'm hearing, they canceled that as well. going full blown 3rd party publisher. Rog Xbox Ally will likely flop with all the negative publicity going on now.

As someone who didn't invest much in the Xbox ecosystem (less than 100 games, many of them are cheap physical copies) I have to say I'm glad I dodged a bullet and I would recommend to stop buying Xbox games when you still can. The future is looking very grim for this ecosystem. Not only it's almost certain they're not going to make another disc console to allow people to play their physical collections, but we may not even receive a traditional, fully backwards-compatible hardware. Slapping an Xbox sticker on a pre-built PC and trying to emulate old Xbox models (or offering streaming) is not the way to go.

you were doing fine until you said people were exaggerating....no, they are not.

I've paid about $230 for 3 years of GP Ultimate which will last until the end of 2027 and i've also bought over 200 games super cheap both thanks to the region changing trick
I can play online with adults instead of 12 year olds on PlayStation screaming like bitches in COD, I've saved thousands of dollars on games so why would i sell my Series X now?
The future looks shitty not gonna deny that but still it's not easy to switch sides now

I was planning on canceling humble, but the game pass price hike made me cancel game pass instead.

Economy is screwed, food prices are insane.

Lets face it I have limited time, a big back log of games never played, I've got a ton of games for free from Epic and a lot of games on game pass end up on humble.

Also I just don't give a shit about activition/blizzard.

Game pass was a nice to have, oblivion and expedition 33 was great to play.

My nephews still has an xbox though, but they only care about roblox.

Oh BS. I have played on both and both have the same online crap. Unless you are talking about playing with friends only.

If I was locked into only the Xbox ecosystem. I would do the same. Load up on GPU as cheap as I can and ride that out the next 2-3 years. There is no reason to change it as long as you're willing to let those games go if you do not like the future outlook. Fortunately for me, I have already moved on from my XBSX and Game Pass. I went back to PC for those games and started purchasing again. The timing worked out great for my needs.

*I did not vote in the poll.

I've got over 1300* digital Xbox games and almost 3 years of gamepass on my account. If Xbox pulled out (and I expect to be buying their next gen system) I'd probably just work on that backlog and sit hardware out for a few years.

I've had Switch/PS5 and Series X. No qualms in saying Microsoft's offering is my preference.

Edit:
I don't have that many games at all. My games list must be including some Gamepass titles. I definitely didn't buy Cities Skyline 2, but it's on my list. Either way, I've got loads of games I have bought and either haven't played much or haven't started or should go back to.

I'll be back next gen if the hardware's compelling.

Sold my Series X earlier this year during the $420 GameStop promo and put that towards a Switch 2. For context, I usually grab whatever consoles are out to avoid missing out, but I didn't feel much hesitation letting the Xbox go. The PS5 Pro flexed harder, and with no Xbox exclusives I couldn't play elsewhere, the Series X turned into a very expensive paperweight.

Xbox is synonymous with gaming culture right you have gears, halo and forza, the headlines are dominated by negativity that includes subscription costs, tiers etc. but Xbox series x kinda mirrors the perfect console that gaming is known for particularly the backwards compatibility, the built in Xbox arcade and Xbox cloud streaming add in that it's a blue ray player it really is special.

They sadly stopped short of having truly grear BC this gen though. After theu did all those FPS BOOST updates they folded up their BC program. Imagine if they continued adding games, boosting FPS to the many games that are still stuck at 30 fps, and most importantly actually boosted resolution for the games they added 60 fps to!

We're left with a situation where theres a decent amount of games running at 6o but thet look like crap on a 4k tv so I doubt many people want to bother playing them at 720p/30 or 720p/60. It sucks because during the Xbox One they did update a lot of games for resolution. They made it sound like the Series X just might be the system that would bridge the gap between PC and consoles.

They also failed to upgrade half the Xbox One library of Xbox exclusives...Quantum Break, Sunset Overdrive, Ryse, Dead Rising 3, Forza Horizon 3 ....none received patches. They screwed up the optomization on Forza Horizon 4 ...they added 60 fps but REMOVED ambient occlusion from the game entirely...like what? Looks terrible now.

Then they forced One S settings on many of the Xbox One games that got FPS boost which was disappointing. Honestly, Series X would've been such an amazing platform and console if they went all the way with BC. I don't know how much that would've added towards sales of Series X and S but for hardcore gamers having this kind of amazing BC would've been a dream come true. It also would've bolstered the value proposition of GamePass ...to me this is a another one of Microsofts major failings this gen.

I only use my series X for xbox 360 games, not buying another console. Who could feel safe that their investments will pay off? We know sony and nintendo arent going anywhere. Series X will continue to be my old call of duty and gears of war machine.

Im already on PS5 so I dont have any issues when it comes to hardware. But I almost bought a xbox console because of halo and gears of war that use to be exclusive to MS xbox.

Haven't been a user for a year or so, but was definitely open to whatever they'd be trying next. With recent news, I'm at a wait and see approach. Will think twice before pouring any money into their ecosystem again.
