Is Skyrim both the best and worst thing to happen to videogames?

Self explanatory, yes no both and why.

EDIT: Alright, hilarious responses, lemme iterate here. The simplicity of Skyrim, its constant hand holding and dumb-ification of the Elder Scrolls formula (even more so than Morrowind to Oblivion) set a bad standard as an unintended side effect that other studios followed for the worse. At the same time, the game was big, had a lot of things to do and was easy to just pick up and play with little to no conveyance. Would you say that the possible Chili's/Applebee's/Olive Garden of AAA games was good or bad for what came after?

You gonna say that for every successful IP?

A question so vague, i doubt even its author could answer it.

Edit: To answer, no, the biggest blame for handholding and oversimplification (among many other things) falls to Ubisoft for their Far Cry and AC games.

I think it's been most damaging to Bethesda, who set it as a standard for themselves that I don't believe they'll be able to match. The rest of the industry got open world brainrot from Grand Theft Auto, Assassin's Creed and (latterly) Breath of the Wild.

It's both best and worst for BGS, it brought them huge success initially but now it's competing with its own games, that's why they are trying to use updates to break their old titles so they could keep sell you creation club paid mods as their new games outlook is grim.

yes, from dev point, they are lazy to fix, and just like drop and see if the community will fix it
but from modder and player, i think it's still cool back then, cept, I don't like the vanilla
... that ugly hair and stiff female animation ... ugh.. but once modded well, the game is fine

cept that combat ugh....

TLDR: for me, some are yes it is fine, but most are not okay

Skyrim wasnt best thing to happen to gaming but from my pov(bethesda/western rpg genre lover) its definitely one of the greats, yes even today if u play it in 4k60 maxed, with 0 mods- it holds up :)

Yep, this mirrors my thoughts exactly.

Not the biggest Skyrim fan, by far (since I havent even finished it), but I know that you are talking nonsense

In 2011 it was amazing, and there are still few games like it.

About the "dumb-ification" of the formula: Skyrim was Oblivion with a better UI and lacking that terrible "reading people" minigame. How deeper was Oblivion?

A lot of game series are like bands, where they start out with this rough sound some people like, then they streamline it to be accessible to the masses...and then they pass a threshold where the streamlining is too much losing the core fans, with maybe 1-2 more albums that casual fans consoom. Finally the band has a choice: innovate to become relevant again, do a back to basics album that just stagnates their decline, or streamline again to just fall off completely.

Skyrim was the accessible album for the masses, Fallout 4 was the point where the streamlining started to lose the core fans, Starfield is the consoom album banking off previous success, and Bethesda is at the 3 choice fork. Fallout 76...that was the random cash grab compilation album the record label crapped out.

Not the worst, thats Grand Theft Auto online for me, the money made from shark cards changed gaming, Bethesda went from one of the best SP devs to wanting to MP all their games and ruined them for mtx, and so did many others.

Skyrim was a great games on release, I hardly played anything else for a few years especially using mods.

The transition from Ultima 7 to Ultima 8 laughs at this comparrison. Talk about making a game more simple.
or World of Warcraft treating people like they were stupid changed more game design than Skyrim ever did.

I can't think of any studios outside of Bethesda who were inspired or copied Skyrim? Especially when you had open world design prior to Skyrim as people have mentioned GTA3.

Spellcrafting, acrobatics/athletics, stats, classes, just to start.

Morrowind was my favorite multiplayer experience.

I was talking to my brother about it last weekend. We played it on OG Xbox with a printed out gamefaq. I don't think anyone played a single session with less than 3 people in the room. You can't play it without a full-time navigator and a full time FAQ reader. Pizza getter and bong loader if you really want a full party. A remake probably won't be able to recreate that for me, but if you're young and have that kind of spare time, I highly recommend it. At the time, it seemed like the pinnacle of technology to us. Gaming would never get more advanced. I didn't know we'd be right.

Shit RPG mechanics, bad combat, poor balance, poor writting and too simple quest design. The game's the definition of "wide as an ocean, deep as a puddle".

But somehow, it's still kinda enjoyable. I loved exploring the world while listening to the amazing OST. A few quests and locations were kino but those are lost in an ocean of mediocrity.

Dragon's Dogma is the better game.

It's not the systems man. It's the walks.

They deserve everything that is happening to them, and I hope it all just gets worse

Dumb-ification of Elder Scrolls 😂

Ok, tell me how to make a fun melee build in Skyrim. Everyone complains about combat in that game.

So, how to have fun.

Skyrim was the title that ended up dumbing down Bethesda's games too much for my taste.
I've simply never been fond of it.
