Battle Royale
2017 - 2025
Cheers to Battle Royale, the original Mario 64 moment.

Now pay your respects by saying something nice as it begins its death throes...

Fortnite and Warzone are 2 of the most played games in the world.

So no, BR games aren't dead. The moment another good one comes along, it'll be popular too.

I actually really like the battle royal concept I just hate how lazy devs are which results in most of them being lame shooters. The my hero academia and VtM games could have been amazing.

How do you forecast their trajectory over the next few years?
Fortnite will always be Fortnite.

Warzone will depend on how BF REDSEC does over the next few seasons and how far they go towards making it more like Warzone, because they don't seem to be interested in making it closer to the BF6 MP.

Beyond those 2, Apex Legends is still going strong and tends to survive wild player fluctuations. EA confirmed they are planning a major update to the game once BF6 release was firmly behind them, and "Apex 2.0" in the future.

Hero, BR, Extraction. Those are the popular FPS MP sub-genre right now. That + Counterstrike. They're different enough that they don't really step on each other's toes.

Apex blends 2(Hero, BR), and Marathon is trying to do the same(Hero, Extraction). But aside from that, there's not much cannibalism in the the genre at the moment.

for me fortnite was on the way out, but then they put a simpsons BR map in it and it sucked me right back in. I heard rumors of a South Park map sometime next year which will AGAIN put me back in. Don't see it drying anytime soon.

Similar games need a PvE or Single Player component. The PvPvE or PvP style of games usually have niche audiences and given high dev costs cannot sustain themselves. It's why games like Bloodhunt and Nosgoth fail. And I suspect next year Duskbloods is more likely to fail then succeed. Since that's a 8v8 PvPvE battle royale.

I feel like I'm too old to understand this thread. Is this what Topher Topher feels like all the time?

People have been saying Call of Duty is dead for over 10 years now, and we might just finally be seeing it die. I don't think BR is dead, maybe in 10 years, so it is not even in early stages of being terminal, imo at least.

PUBG is one of my favourite games. Me and my mates play it regularly.

Exactly why there are players who want the genre to die is beyond me. It not exactly as if the BR genre existing is taking anything away. There are literally hundreds, thousands even, of other games to play!

This will be fun to bump in 3 or so years as the Battle Royale base migrates to Extraction.

back before, I thought mmo boom is terrible trends, and yet, here we are, another annoying trend, but soon might die and i'm sure there will be annoying trend chasing once there is new trend arise.

All BRs are dead to me but Fortnite. It's one of the only ones where you can never spend a dime and get the BP just by playing.

If they mess that up though, Fortnite is dead to me. What keeps it fun is going through the battle pass to earn stuff while you play. And I'm never (again) paying for a BP in a game.

I did it once for OW2 and what a mess that was. Didn't even bother finishing it. Not only were the skins boring, it was grindy AND you have to pay again for future BPs forever.

PUBG remains very popular as well

Yeah, Fortnite has the fairest system and continues to update whilst leaving access to everything you've acquired through the pass or purchased from the store.

It's the safest one to play value-wise.

He's trolling, and to be fair it's pretty funny. Never seen anyone rile up gamers without relying on console wars like OP.
Honestly not trolling. I use a little (bad) humor to spark a discussion about design and where the industry is headed.

The reason why Battle Royale just got stage 4 cancer is because the flow of players only goes one way. You don't play Extraction and then shift to playing BR over the long term. You play BR and "graduate" to Extraction. It's a slide as real as the one at the park. BR had relatively little competition over the last 8 years.

BR was the Great White Shark. Enter Extraction...
