AI’s impact on gaming has me angry and depressed.

The absolute greed and recklessness of these companies capitalizing on the "AI Bubble" (which cannot blow up soon enough) has left me, and I suspect many other gamers, feeling both angry and depressed. I fear that with the rapidly rising RAM prices that this trend could follow to other components that a data center might need, leading to an entire group (and probably the largest group of people) being completely priced out of gaming as a hobby. This price gouging will absolutely expand beyond just PC to consoles and probably other devices requiring some components (think smartphones, tablets, etc). Seems like the end game is for these greedy companies to price out the vast majority to then introduce cloud-based subscriptions as the solution, only to then price gouge that while also integrating ads to enshittify an already worse gaming experience.

Fuck AI, and fuck all of these greedy bastards actively propping up the AI bubble.

There are decades of games that can still be played. Yeah, they don't look as good as what can be accomplished today but, does that really mean anything? The majority of modern games with high-end graphics aren't anything special when it comes to gameplay.

What gives me some optimism is the reaction people had towards that shit in the last Call of Duty where it was the lowest effort "anime prompt-art" with yellow filtering on display, and for 80 bucks.

But hey thankfully we have 30+ years of cool videogames behind us to keep us entertained. I'm also starting to get into reading books lol.

LectureMaster LectureMaster I know you just want to meme, but those are 2 completely different things dude.

LLM GEN AI or deep learning upscaling tech, they are both AI just different branches. Remember how bad DLSS 1.0 was?

I think in the long term we will benefit from AI, with now being in the painful transition phase.

Sorry man but I disagree. DLSS 1.0 sure sucked but, even if LLM GEN AI ends up generating super cool shit, I bet that games that depend on it heavily will be missing that human touch, the little nuances that come from game mechanics design and level design.

I might be wrong like so many other times but right now I'm not happy with how things are going.

edit: and I don't mind stuff like people using AI for getting some code help, generating a 3D model as reference for a drawing or generating some 2D art for inspiration. What I don't want is to spend 80 bucks on a game to later find out that the actual, final assets that the game uses have been farted by an AI.

That's fair my man. I agree with you on the usage. I like how Gen AI is really good at coding now, but I absolutely disdain the picture slops it can generate.

My view is that AI eventually is a productivity tool for the devs, and talented ones can make good use of it. Much like there are good implementations and bad ones of DLSS.

Exactly! It's a very, very powerful tool. Thing is, imo, it should be used to reach new heights, but instead we are reaching new lows like the one below while companies only ever think about increasing profits.

Sucks for PC players who haven't updated their system in a while.

Think the advice is to hunker down right now.

If you're interested in a Steam Deck, Switch 2 or PS5 buy now and wait it out for 2 or 3 years.

Not me .. I bought a ps5 pro.. got my switch 2 and a Xbox x for good measure and have played ( and enjoyed " more games in the last 4 months than I have in 4 years.

Yeah, and the game libraries stretch back decades. There are plenty of games to play and some great ones got released just this year even.

You guys are too reactionary as if every game is now made with A.I.

This year alone we got so many great games and next year we gonna get more especially this Feb is gonna be great month for gaming.

But if you just want sit your ass and be depressed about events thats not happened yet then knock yourself out.

For someone whose user title is "the nicest person on this forum," you sure don't seem very nice. Tens of thousands of developers, and over 1 million people in the US, have been laid off this year alone with AI being an excuse by these companies, and I was one of them. Save your gaslighting.

That sounds like a very stupid plan since you still need these devices to play cloud-based games. And honestly, it's already perfectly possible to do just that without needing cloud.

SK Hynix has the opportunity to scale their production but they said "We don't want to take the risk to overproduce and driving the price of RAM down if Ai demand is slowing down".
It's easy to target Ai company but the real problem are those memory chipmaker guilty of price fixing.
Samsung already got found guilty of doing so years ago but they still all do it.

It's a bad time because of this hardware race but keep in mind that in the future Ai will accelerate and completely transform the gaming industry.

"Fuck AI"

That's the idea, that's the wet dream, homie

U laughing but if humans wont experience ww3 nuclear war aka end/hard reset of whole species i guarantee u our grandsons will have their personal harem of sex companion robots- just imagine- all 10/10 flawless beauties, not jealous and not aging, obedient, quiet, non argumentative, apreciative, caring etc, today's modern women already stand no chance vs those androids and in 30-50years it will only gonna get more prevalent :messenger_astonished:

Men are so fucking ez to please its not even funny, and u can tell we- men are problem solvers by design- so sooner rather than later we gonna solve this shit.
Our chinese overlords already are hard at work:

Ofc its relatively small and not very advanced- still under 1,4k usd for commercial use- not some labolatory prototype worth 5m bucks but actually afordable one- what its 10th or 20th gen gonna look like and will be capable of doing in 50 years? :P

Sarah Connor Chronicles tv series was short but great btw, strongly recommend :)

This, what i see when AI rose few years ago, but people keep talking the good usage, while we now see the bad usage of AI, it won't be better later on, it could be worse

prices have definitely sucked for years
mining to AI

gaming feels stagnant though creatively
lots of good stuff to play, but not much feels new/novel

games are so expensive to make, devs/publishers play it safe
hopefully AI can lower costs so taking risks becomes more financially viable

and hopefully we get an AI-based AA breakthrough
toy story 1's original resolution was under 1080p but has cleaner IQ than my 4k + AA games

Yep, pretty much. Time to batten down the hardware hatches until this is over! I was considering building a new PC soon because mine is five years old now but nope, my old PC will have to serve me awhile longer....

I never subscribed to any cloud services and never will. I store all my entertainment locally and DRM free. I have enough media/games to last a few lifetimes and the only dependencies to be able to use them is a working computer, a monitor, speakers and electricity. And i'm willing to solve the electricity issue as well in the near future, so i won't depend on anyone to provide it for me.

I will never be a part of this cloud/subscription based future they try to build for us. I'll be that old guy who yells at the clouds.

Humanity is creating God. I'm fine paying more for a PS6 in the meantime.

Whatever happens, a not insignificant amount of consumers actively welcomed this.

I too am hoping for this bubble to pop. I've seen nothing particularly convincing or promising coming out if it.

The prices do suck, I know cause I had to buy HDDs, and a new nvme SSD for my new NAS this past week.

First time disc storage went up in price per GB for me, but thankfully could re-use the RAM, CPU & Motherboard from my old 2019 machine in the build.

I think I'd be more angry if higher budget games using this hardware were worth much, but most of what I've played & loved in the last year has been AA down to indie. If the trend continues, I'll just be sitting on my existing hardware for longer, especially given Moore's Law has been dead for a while regarding hardware advances anyway.

Mmmm.... cry moar
I have the simplest, yet the hardest answer
The Serenity Prayer is a famous short prayer asking for serenity to accept what can't be changed, courage to change what can, and wisdom to know the difference

Hardware stagnation isn't necessarily a bad thing. It'll just force devs to be more creative. And if you waited thus far to upgrade your PC, it can probably handle today's games anyway.

I truly have a bad feeling about the future of gaming and this is even before AI becomes more wildly used and common. Nothing but greed runs rampant and this obviously applies for most industries. Makes me unsure if I even want to jump into next generation at this point because I GUARANTEE that the greed and shenanigans will be on another level and the employees and consumers are going to be the ones suffering the most.
