Capcom removed Denuvo for another DRM, and it makes the game run up to 50% worse

Or is it just one of Adam's balls in my throat?

Capcom's fan-favorite remake now makes use of Enigma DRM instead of Denuvo. According to a video posted by ItalicMaze, the game now runs at half the frame rate on his Ryzen 5 5600 and RX 7600 PC.

This may be the worst-case scenario in this instance, but other reports show similar impacts, with performance on the Steam Deck also being worsened by 20-30% at any given moment.

Also, gamers on Reddit state that the title now uses more VRAM on PC. In the aftermath, the remake is being review bombed on Steam. Filtering by recent reviews shows that most of the recent reviews are negative, citing issues with the DRM.

Don't buy this until they remove the performance-breaking DRM.

Resident Evil 4 Remake Review Bombed on Steam

It remains to be seen whether Capcom will respond to the negativity surrounding Resident Evil 4 Remake following this update. The team's sudden decision to change the remake's DRM was strange to begin with, considering it typically removes Denuvo completely from older titles.

Capcom, I'm not going to pirate your games. I swear.
I'm never going to buy a spinning hard drive again. ever.
SSD's are too expensive to store pirated games.
Optical media is dead.

You don't need to DRM.

Yeah this is fucking shit. Pirates have the best version without Denuvo or Enigma DRM. Paying customers who have a legit version on Steam like me get fucked.

I changed my review to negative. Fuck Capcom for this bs

The game is already cracked so there is zero point in DRM now other than fuck consumers and burn their own money paying for the Enigma in RE4R. 🤦‍♂️
Well, even for cheaper alternative they chose an ass one. Could have just used standard Steam DRM
Oh yea. Capcom is 100% fucking over their customers(and their developers) by cheapening out on something they have no reason to be spending any money on in the first place.

Well, with Steam DRM the game would've been cracked within seconds. With this Enigma DRM tho, the game is at least not crac...

Oh My God Reaction GIF

So Capcom just fucked paying customers, for nothing at all. While pirates get the superior version.
FFS, I really wish the gaming industry wasn't managed by complete muppets.

Capcom really bending over backwards to make their games worse on PC...and then giving more incentive to use the superior pirated version.

For anyone wondering why. Enigma license is about 100x cheaper than Denuvo.
Well if your product sucks more, it should be.

This is pretty lame as i'm replaying the game right now. It's especially bad since AMD paid them not to include DLSS, so the game is already more demanding than it should be.

Clueless Capcom management is making sure people will eye their future releases with suspicion. Great success, at least they saved $.50/copy on even crappier DRM tool. 🤡🤡🤡🤡

They sposored patches to include new DRM into the game and RE9 banner but still no fucking FSR4, DLSS, Xess...

Thanks Capcpom. This isn't a Revelaiton, though - plenty of history of the same.

DRM is an area Capcom have always lacked in. They use multiple DRMs in a single game that have noticeable effects on performance.

Why do they even bother with an older game like this. You can buy a copy from a keysite pretty cheap, Capcom doesn't have to be panicking about pirated copies and "lost profits".

Does the cracked version get rid of the enigma performance issues? I'm gonna be pissed if pirating a game I already own is preferable to reinstalling it.

It'a like they can't help themselves from putting out trash performance games.

These drm things never help out the consumer and will only push them away. It's ridiculous to lose this much performance for nothing.

Play the free demo, support the devs when the game is 50% off ( or less )

If you already bought the game, Capcom secured that sale and can't refund it.

So why would they care if it negatively affects you?

Besides that not like there are that many sales left on the table (relative to how many units it's sold to date).

Those kind of decisions are probably taken by clueless executives, if they had someone in touch with the players this wouldn't happen.

Capcom got tired of people complaining about Denuvo and demanding it to be removed, so their master plan was to invent a worse DRM to make Denuvo look so good that people demand it's put back in. :messenger_grinning_squinting:

They've been doing this for at least 2 years already.

Seemingly at the time, they did it in an attempt to crack down on people modding (and I guess mis-representing) their games. People were pissed then, and will continue to be pissed, rightfully so.

Capcom has been a fairly shitty publisher for years now, but people forgive it because they have some great IPs.

RE4R has already been cracked, so the only possible reason as to why I can see them doing something like this, is to test it for RE9.

Other than that this is an outrageously shitty fucking practice, and it sucks it's not bigger news. Because it should be. We're talking about a 3 year old game that they just made perform 30% worse, to install DRM for a game that's already been cracked. They should be raked over the coals for this.

The game has been so cheap and out long enough that this strategy makes little sense. Those they wanted buy it have overwhelmingly done so already. How many extra copies would this strategy actually shift?

Just goes to show that suits are usually morons.

Pretty fucking disgusting that cracking your own legal purchase of a game is needed just to get performance back that shouldn't have been taken away in the first place.

Hopefully they reverse the update quickly.

Does DRM even do any good instead of just making it worse for people who actually pay for the game? Don't crackers just...crack the game and thus also get rid of the DRM?

I dont think Japanese people know that their games are being pirated lmao. There is absolutely no reason to add DRM to the game at this point so I'm convinced they're clueless on all PC aspects including piracy.

Damn. Cracked exe it is, then. They keep using drm and fucking over the people who propelled the remakes into successes, Myself included.

Can you replace the normal exe in your steam folder with the cracked version?

How is it legal to essentially ruin a product someone bought from you, remotely, after sale? I have trouble believing that there isn't some consumer protection mechanism that could bring Capcom to heel if only it were invoked.
