Best Top 15 Games List Ever?

This is the PS2, and yes a top 15 list is subjective.

PS2-Top-15.png

However, the sheer variety, impact, and quality of this list on a single console is unmatched.

Not a lot of variety in that, to be honest.

Also, is this your top 15? Someone else's top 15 is this? Was there a write up rationale for why those games were chosen? Give us something to work with.

the sheer variety
Dude, it lists 2 GTA games and 2 Metal Gear games. Nothing against them as they are very cool games but when it comes to variety there's way more out there than what's on that top 15.

FFX, Okami, GTA (in general), God of War 2, and Burnout (in general) should never be in a best games list ever.

2 Metal Gear
2 GTA
Ico/SoTC
2 Racing games
2 JRPGs
2 'Horror' games

That's not a lot of variety.
Look at the entire list...?
Dude, you didn't post a list. Just a screenshot of the top 15 in your thread about the top 15. And the screenshot of the top 15 shows very little variety.

PS2 had a lot of variety. Most of any console in any generation. But this particular list doesn't show that.

You're speaking as if these franchises were decades old at this point, of the PS2's life.

Show me a top 15 Switch games list, I'm ready to see rehashed Nintendo games that haven't changed in decades and list of decade old ports.

We're talking for ONE console.

What you posted is a combination of PC, and various other consoles.

I said "sheer variety, impact, and quality ".

GTA3 (open world design) and RE4 (over the shoulder aiming with a cinematic approach) literally revolutionized the industry.

How many those games you posted are still remembered for their impact and quality.

Yeah GT2, MGS, and FF7 are but the list still pales in comparison.

Nice try though.

Tekken 3, SOTN, and R4 alone mog the PS2 list in terms of critical acclaim, lol.

You're focusing on one point, I said "sheer variety, impact, and quality ".
Well yeah, impact and quality is subjective. I can objectively look at that list and see at least 3 sets, and a bunch of other similar games. That's why I honed in on variety.

My guy, your thread title is this "Best Top 15 Games List Ever?"

You posted no criteria.

Respectable PS1 and PS2 lists, nice.

Okay. So the variety issue - yes yes yes I'm still on that!

Reading up on the methodology for coming up with that list, it makes sense that the top lacks variety. Yeah I said it again!

Having said that, the further you go down the list the more varied it gets.

Yes, the variety of the entire list is crazy.

I did mention a top 15 is subjective, however.

11 of the 15 are sequels.... whats changed?
Take a look at the entire list, that will answer your question.

Also a majority of the game posted only 1 - 3 entries in their series, and these IPs weren't decades old by this point.

A sequel usually was released within 1 -3 years since the previous game.

Takes literally 5 - 7 years to get a single game of these types, nowadays.

From your list, I'd boot off FFX, GOW2, Vice City (Limiting myself to just one GTA), MGS2 (see GTA), RE4 (play the Cube version instead) and Okami. I'd probably replace Burnout 3 with Burnout 2. Shadow Hearts, Rez, Dragon Quest VIII, SSX Tricky, Devil May Cry 3, and NBA Street V2. I'd also listen to arguments for We Love Katamari over Katamari Damacy and GT3 over GT4. I'd still feel terrible for fucking over the likes of Ace Combat 4 and countless others. PS2 was insane.

Props to knowing what Rez is btw.

And yes, PS2 was insane.

2001 lineup below.

We're lucky to even get all this in one gen, nowadays.

Well, you have Katamari on there, so you've got at least a bit of street cred.

But why is this all PS2? Do you want everyone to list their top PS2 games? It was that literally the only platform you've ever played on?

I had every console, and it's not that PS2 is no questions asked the best console.

There's definitely competition, however the variety of the console is unmatched.

If we list the entire generation, then I don't know if there's ever been a better generation games wise.

PC (early 2000s), DC, Xbox, GC, and PS2 all had their unique elements that made them stand apart.

Whereas today, everything is multiplat and XSX and PS5 are basically interchangeable.

Didn't feel these two?

God of War was never my thing. I was recently laid off when FFX released and I finished it in a long weekend. The narrative approach reminded me of the Wonder Years (again, not my cup of tea) and I hated how linear it felt. I'm also pretty bad at JRPGs and I flew the game until the final boss smacked my ass. Thank God for the Omega Ruins.

I even own a trance vibrator. ha
Same. And I used to invite people over to my apartment in college to "experience" it. 😏

But they were guys :(

That's a fair criticism of FFX. It was the original "it gets better after X hours when it opens up" that we heard with FF13 years later. Neither really "opened up" lol.

Nice, really misunderstood and overlooked game.

Mizuguchi plodded on with synesthesia with a ton of titles, but I'm happy he finally got his due respect with Tetris Effect. I've bought all of his games even if I don't really like his puzzle game efforts. There are very few games I consider perfect, but Tetris is one of them and marrying it with one of my favorite concepts was pure joy. It's kind of crazy that we got Tetris Effect and Tetris 99 so close to one another. I love playing Tetris anyway, but those just give me more avenues to enjoy it.

And speaking of the trance vibrator, they built a synesthesia suit for Rez Infinite. I'd kill to get my hands on that.

Rez was definitely an experimental game that I wish got more attention, it got severely overlooked on the Dreamcast and eventual PS2 release.
I'm a big Mizuguchi fan. I got to meet him at E3 one year, which was super cool.

But I don't think Rez is nearly as underrated as Child of Eden. I played that for the first time on a gigantic 10-foot screen and surround sound with PS Move, and it was unreal.

He's perfected the ability to get players into the "flow state".

By the way, if you really want an overlooked deep cut by Mizuguchi, check out Every Extend Extra on PSP, or Every Extend Extra Extreme on X360. Those games are unbelievably fun. Shoutouts to NextTribe on the OSTs.

That's awesome you got a chance to meet him, I think for Mizuguchi a lot of people don't understand his way of thinking.

He's definitely a visionary kind of guy that, likes to push the boundaries of the medium in experimental ways.
