It's Official: New PSSR Confirmed For Resident Evil Requiem + FSR 4/DLSS 4.5 Comparisons

Curious if system level was always the plan from OG PSSR that took 2 versions too implement of if seeing how studios were implementing it forced the decision.

Now Squanch Games can slap PISSER 2.0 on to High on Life 2!

Nah FSR5/PSSR3 will be transformer model like newer DLSS
This may be true, but isn't a guarantee. Check the latest paper that AMD released, which they also quoted in a "Future of FSR" segment.

It actually goes back to a U-Net, which is CNN-based, instead of a transformer, and comes with a coupled denoiser, as opposed to the decoupled ray regeneration right now.

A lot of trial/error and experimentation still in the works:
https://gpuopen.com/download/I3D25_..._Multi-branch_Multi-scale_Feature Network.pdf

So a transformer model may not be the end-state after all.

All games will look better.

PSSR1 even in games that produced good results was still behind FSR4 and DLSS3. Now console gamers will see FSR4.1 image quality level.

For its first iteration PSSR1 provided good results if properly used. FSR4 came later. DLSS is league on its own.

Excellent stuff, this marks a major turning point for PS5 Pro. GTA VI trailers have been shown running at ~1440P on base PS5. Imagine the extra fidelity boost with Pro running 1080p with PSSR2 upscale.

PCMR just lost the MLA upscaling advantage they had, as this is basically a copy of FSR 4.1 if not better as it's targeting a single spec....
So you don't know that with FSR4 and DLSS they can still choose higher native resolutions as input (performance/balanced/quality/ultra quality) and not be limited to one lower resolution like with PSSR2... and DLSS still looks better as per thread video...

Hopefully now, just like RE9 on Ps5 pro the two modes, the 4k with RT at 60 fps and 4k at 120 fps without RT, will become the standard mode for majority of games.

That system-wide toggle is unexpected and greatly appreciated, but I'm not seeing it in the menu. This looks just like FSR 4 which is a good thing. Maybe even the new 4.1 version before we got it officially on PC(it was leaked I've only tried it in Cyberpunk). FSR4 int8 also leaked recently. I wonder if this is the fruition of both of those projects?

So does this mean that Silent Hill 2 needs the devs to add PSSR back into Performance mode again? That would be wild. I have the disc version I wonder if that would work if I bypass the update?
Don't be a fanboy, my criticism was completely valid and I don't hold back on AMD's PC team either. Took almost a year to get here since FSR4. I have a monster stack of Pro enhanced games I've been sitting on waiting for this moment. Probably upwards of 30 PSSR games. These companies don't respond well to nut hugging.

Stop bullshiting. It wasn't bad if properly used. I've named some games where it is good. So, cut the crap here.
Before the pssr update, 1st and 2nd party games are are already good, like for example Death stranding 2, Goy, Stellar blade, GT7, Astrobot, Ratchet and clank, Spiderman, etc. This new pssr 2.0 will help allot of third party games.

As announced, it will arrive in early 2026. This PSSR2 is a huge improvement for the PS5 Pro and will continue to improve; the difference with the base consoles is quite significant. Let's see how the collaboration between Sony and AMD progresses, but it looks very promising, this has few pages after all the hate the console has received.

The system update isn't dropping until sometime in March.

Either way another huge win for PS5 Pro and PlayStation in general. This upscaler has reached the point where it should satisfy generally in all areas of concern and finally gives a DLSS-esque level of quality.

Yep. Third parties needed this more than first, for whatever reason. Think it is useless to continue debating the good/bad of PSSR1 other than to say it was needed to get to PSSR2.

It is behind FSR 4 ( which came later) and DLSS3. No one claimed otherwise. But it was on par with XeSS

I won't argue with that because I'm not very familiar with XeSS. I used DP4A version two or three times but never had access to native Intel version.

It has similar cost to FSR2/PSSR1, so it won't improve framerates compared to those techniques. Just image quality.

You see, even PSSR2/FSR4.1 won't save image quality if game resolution is 720p/864p. And many games on consoles have resolution like that (UE5 games, AW2, JS...)

Resident evil 9 is slightly above 1080p, that's a very good base resolution for 4k upscaling.

Developers are still able to make bad looking games with PSSR2.
I'm talking about fps boosts in general when comparing the base console to the pro.

If you enable you get the last PSSR version, if you don't enable you will get play with the exact same version the game was released.

Some other key points:
- ray reconstruction likely also coming to Pro.
- Pro will continue to be improved. OG PS5 going to fall further behind in image quality over time.
- coincides with the leak earlier this week of an updated FSR4.

Seems Sony and AMD are really working in tandem here.

It looks similar to Pragmata hair, so that demo was using PSSR1 I guess.

Massive improvment, good job Cerny/Sony/AMD.
Yup actual improvements.

Congrats for the PS5 pro owners

Now @Boji , any bets when suddenly frame generation is gonna be cool?
Alex more than makes up for the Pc crowd.

If you are able to run the disc version without updating it, the toggle should work post launch. Otherwise, yes, they will have to patch it back in. Which is why throwing it out was a terrible idea. They should have at least done a toggle like the other games that were struggling with PSSR.

I would argue that GT7 and GoW:R need it badly. I'm basically playing the base version at the moment on both.

Really? I haven't played it but I thought the GT7 implementation of PSSR was pretty good.

It's a bit subjective at the moment. I have it all turned off as I found the aliasing on road markers distracting, pulsing shadows in cockpit and scaled back LOD. Now this might be objectively better on all aspects. Fingers crossed!

I played almost all games with PSSR support (that were available at the time) when I got PS5 Pro. I know exactly how it looks.
Same. It makes me curious how people didn't notice the issues? My theory is they are coming from FSR1/2 on PS5 and perhaps don't have experience with DLSS4 and FSR4 to know how much it needed to improve.

My hope, now that all of the upscalers are pretty damn good, is that we can finally send all of those uninformed "720p in 2026!! PS3 res lol!!" posts to the deepest, darkest recesses of gaming hell.

This is a a "720p" scale to 4K using DLSS4 ultra performance mode btw:

We're playing at couch distances on tvs of varying quality. People who splurge on nicer tvs are gonna notice it more than people who cheaped out on their set and all content looks mid anyway.

It has issues. But it was good if properly used. FSR4 came later. Anyway, haven't been before when he played on Pro before.

I will never stop laughing at people telling you, one of the few known PS5 Pro owners on GAF, that you haven't seen PSSR, just because you're not constantly waxing poetics about it.

And looks blurry AF. ultra performance is a big NOPE.
