With Garnett Lee on vacation it's up to Jeff and Xav to drive the bus. Helping them keep the Weekend Confirmed bus out of the ditch is Totally Rad Show co-host Dan Trachtenberg and DJ Andy Reid from 44th and Filth. The crew talks Ms. 'Splosion Man, Alice: Madness Returns, Dead Space 2, Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012, and more. In Listener Feedback we talk about if Nintendo has aged along with its old school fanbase and whether or not Call of Duty is the media's favorite whipping boy, among a few other topics. Then we slow things down and tackle the biggest news of the week, including discussion on EA's acquisition of PopCap.

Take a drink every time:

Garnett:
  • makes a sexual innuendo that doesn't make sense
  • fakes a horrible impression of a fictional figure or accent (Shadow780)
  • laughs really long and hard at something.. like whenever someone says, "long and hard" (DangerStepp)
  • repeats something someone else said with a dramatic deep voice (Oni Jazar)
  • makes a Canadian joke when Xav is on (LiK)
    [*]says "crux" (DangerStepp)
Jeff:
  • says something is 'phenomenal' with great enunciation
  • says "onus" (DangerStepp)
  • mentions Heavy Rain or Red Dead Redemption (DangerStepp)
  • makes an obscure 80s hip hop reference and commences to sing the majority of the song while Garnett beatboxes (DangerStepp)
    [*]uses "sublime" (DangerStepp)
Andrea:
  • giggles
Xav:
  • says the f-word (DangerStepp)
Group:
  • chuckles appreciatively after a Del Rio remix
    [*]mentions: "Torchlight" (DangerStepp)
    [*]says "mechanics" (DangerStepp)

Feel free to add your own
Added a few. Keep 'em coming; don't let our shine be stopped!!

I got the aspirin handy!

Dead Space 2???

I haven't listened to it yet, but I'm hoping the Dead Space 2 bashing is...well...kept to a minimum.

Either way Trachtenberg is an interesting guy. Never quite sure where he's going to fall on a game. For some reason I don't classify him as a "gamer" despite the fact that he plays games.

In my strange brain...I cut a "non-gamer" more slack when they talk about the quality of games or why a game is "great" or "not-great".

Ironic that Garnet is away for episode "69." Get it?
I think that if Garnett was present for episode 69, either there would be an implosion of sexual innuendo, destroying Shacknews's offices.

:P

Getting uppity about someone saying mechanics is dumb. It is like saying gameplay, but more specific.

Also, don't worry Garnett, I'll 69 with you. Wait what

I never got the sense that the building ambivalence towards CoD from the media and hardcore gamers was a result of not being good enough at the game to be competitive.

It always came across to me as an opinion I share - that the fundamental gameplay formula for CoD has not evolved over time, and has grown stale. I'm personally fine at the game. I can jump in and hold my own in any game, and top the leader board in more than a few.

I choose not to play CoD anymore, because I'm burned out on the formula. The weapons and perks may change, and there are new maps to memorize, but the core 'whoever sees the other guy first wins' combat system limits any strategy or evolution beyond routes through the map and team coordination in objective modes.

The popularity the game maintains is actually an impediment to such evolution, cause god forbid they risk losing any of those millions of players by asking them to think for 15 seconds.

There was another franchise that relied on a relatively simplistic gameplay formula, and did little to evolve the experience from game-to-game in yearly installments. I believe it was called 'Guitar something...'

Full disclosure: I am a fairly huge Halo fan, and love that game's core mechanics... which are pretty much the exact opposite of CoD.

I stopped playing COD because of the 'more is better' design philosophy that started with MW2.
I'm great at both games but using turrets and weapon mounted radar (not to mention duel shot guns) to win never felt as good as just using claymores and an M4.
Also Treyarch make really poor SP and MP maps.

I'm really tired of hearimg "Uncharted has great single player so why is there multiplayer?" The multiplayer is great
Oh I thought you were going to say, the SP isn't actually all that great

It's fine if it's there. I'm just never going to play it. Didn't enjoy the multiplayer in Uncharted 2. But for those who love it, I'm glad it's in there.

Same with Assassin's Creed... only I really enjoyed the multiplayer in that game... until I hit lvl 50, and matches started playing the same way pretty consistently.

NEVER BRING ANDY REID ON THIS SHOW EVER AGAIN

This guy is the absolute worst. THE worst. God fucking dammit. Jesus. Fuck.

I'm at 1 hour and 10 minutes in, and holy fuck no, this annoying fucking voice with how he just keeps whining and dodging and avoiding confrontation by pretending to have a valid voice in the argument about whether or not there are good games on the Wii that are meant for the hardcore audience. His voice is so fucking telling that he does not touch these games, whether its No More Heroes or what Metroid Prime 3 or Silent Hill. Doesn't fucking matter, the guy's condemned his Wii, the Wii "stole" his money, he was "tricked" by Nintendo.

Fuck this guy, fuck him calling Ocarina of Time "kiddy," fuck him. I was tolerating him up until he dropped that shit. The moment someone starts calling something that looks cartoony "kiddy" is when I've gone from no-respect to minus-respect.

Never bring Andy Reid back. Just listening to Xav and Jeff try and reason with him shows their disbelief.

He is so annoying. He is literally a random internet person, GAF or otherwise.

Jeff and Xav are somehow the sole voices of reason here.

How is he in his mid-30's? He sounds like a 20 year old.

God, fuck.

Andy: "How did the gamecube go?"
Jeff and Xav: "I love my gamecube"
Andy: (unnerved sigh) "yeah, well."

Over and over, he's continuously trying to push his biased-ass and borderline ignorant opinion against a wall of reason.

Andy is like that gamestop employee who listens to all of the podcasts, goes to the internet forums, and talks his shit, but has very little experience or grounding to back him up because he is what he is: the guy who spends 70% of his gaming time spent on Call of Duty. He shits on everything that "doesn't interest" him because he doesn't actually play them, and only uses dissenting opinions of others as a basis for his argument. He's singing one song, and that's his entire campaign message. This, against Jeff and Xav, who, as Jeff said very early on in the podcast, plays ~70 games a year to completion.

Fuck this guy, never bring him on ever again.

I've never hidden the fact the only reason I listen to this show is because I love Garnett so much, but it really hit me how that is the case when he's not on a show. I have below zero desire to listen to this episode, haha.

Wow, guess I can wait a bit before listening to this one. However I might just skip it and wait for the next one with Garnett (main reason I love the show).

Guys lets not piss all over this Andy dude, his music is the only thing bringing so many people to the show every week.

Horseshit.

;)

Only 25 minutes in or so, but not too shabby gentlemen! Jeff was great last episode...cogent arguments, well-expressed opinions, etc, etc...seemed back in that groove here. Good stuff.

Actually looking forward to finishing up the episode on my commute next week.

well that was completely uncalled-for.

Maybe next time you should go for a walk or something instead of making such an embarrassingly pathetic post.
Perhaps you should listen to the segment in question.

The way he handles himself during that entire section is so incredibly transparent, its disgusting. Any other part of the podcast of him talking seems ok, but that part just completely pisses me off, both as a listener and as a gamer.

The guy does his best to hold onto the platform of half-truths and lies as the honesty, integrity, and experience of Jeff and Xav knock away large chunks of his foundation, and it shows in his voice as he continues to fail to make a solid point.

As Jeff said, I understand his point and what he's trying to get at, but in his stalwart and blind desire to so quickly paint and condemn the WiiU because of his own apathy of anything Wii-related (and in turn, anything "hardcore" that came out on the Wii), makes him look the fool in the entire segment. Its repulsive behavior that has no place on a gaming podcast that serves a broad audience.

Exactly. I can taste hints of Luke's hatred for anything that didn't serve his demographic, but its in an unwieldy and dull form.

Luke was as sharp as a tack, opinions or otherwise. Not to mention he had a great foil in Shane to play off of.

Although there were too many 'fucks' in that post, I have to say that I share Kim's sentiment. Andy's comments regarding Nintendo are borderline trollish. The points he makes a largely backed by ignorance and when Jeff and Xav pressed him on stuff, he just seemed to shrug his shoulders and hide behind his preferences.

I mean, honestly, you know somebody is full of shit when they accuse Nintendo of making the same game all the time but they're perfectly fine with their yearly update of Call of Duty or Halo.

Yeah, sorry. I just completely lost my shit when he said "kiddy." Rage and rampage.

Personally I really like Andy on the show. He definitely was a breath of fresh air for the podcast in my opinion. At least outside the Nintendo stuff. I'll agree that his Nintendo points were dumb (kiddy, really we are still going there) but what was really annoying about that section was Jeff and Xav's half hearted at best defense of the WiiU

They could barely argue in favor of it. Honestly I got the impression that they agreed with Andy but didn't want to say it. Andy had a few good point and all Jeff and Xav could say was "bu bu but it has potential!" They couldn't even muster up the energy to explain WHY it had potential, just that it did. Garnett or Mattas or Billy totally could have taken Andy to task and made it a more interesting discussion

I loved how the Whatcha Been Playing turned into the Call of Duty talk. Its nice to see this very segmented podcast get stirred around a little.

Anyway he seems like someone I would get tired of if he was on every week but I have no problems bringing Andy several times a year to stir the pot and shake things up. I bet he and Garnett would have good chemistry

You know what. I take it back.

I want an episode where its nothing but Andy, Andrea, Billy, and Christian, and just have them go after each other's necks.

Xav, Jeff, and Garnett could have a nice break :P

Oh, and I wanted to say that Xav was a wonderfully pleasant and stoic host throughout. Not as flashy as Garnett, but a nice change of pace.

My money is on Billy

He seems scrappy

I thought he did a great job but I was completely caught off guard when he opened the show. I just assumed Jeff would do it for some reason

I wouldn't mind seeing Garnett taking a back seat next episode and letting Xav handle things. I bet it would work out pretty well

Agreed, first 25minutes.

  • Doesn't like Mirror's Edge because he sucks at it.
  • Praises Assassin's Creed multiplayer for being innovative (The Ship?)
  • Complains that CoD coverage is all about the single player. (What the fuck are they going to cover about old multiplayer?)
  • Competitive Call of Duty guy, 1.52234234 blah blah KDR. (Dude thats pretty shitty, and I play CoD once in a blue moon)
  • Shits on Battlefield because it has classes.
  • Shits on Battlefield because it is rooted in PC (Never heard of Call of Duty 1, Mr. Reid?)
Bring back the Orthodontist, Billy, Andrea, Danny T, whoever... just not this guy.

Excuse me while I go throw up, not even going to continue on to hear his Nintendo trolls.

I tolerated all of this until he called OoT "kiddy."

Man, if Garnett was on, he would not tolerate that shit. I do not tolerate fuckers calling shit "kiddy" unless its the most shallow, insipid, face-value-only type of garbage that's literally meant for kids and not for a wider audience. I noticed him being real damn close to saying something about Wind Waker, too.

What do you expect from a Call of Duty "Pro" with "1.4"KDR. Talk about lowest common denominator gamer. (He's lucky he didn't shit on Wind Waker...)
