i just saw SR yesterday..

the Wachosky brothers should never make another movie ever

the target audience was so muffled with awful story telling.

Convoluted stories with heavy back-stories do not mean that it's good writing... especially when you have trouble telling the story where you are obliged to have some dude talk about the past for 10 minutes period

the movie was 40 minutes too long. The car physics were not believable.. just CG fluff
You don't belong on GAF!!

I'm glad I saw in the theatre. It was a bad movie, but it had it's moments.

I especially loved the last few moments of the last race - that was fantastic.

Don't believe the GAFhype, though. It's kind of weird.

I never understood the hate this movie gets. Then again I loved the cartoons growing up, and I thought this was pretty much a live action version of the cartoons. I thought it was spot on in capturing the same kind of feel and action from that. I really don't know what people expected, but a realistic live action take on Speed Racer would have been lame.
the convoluted story... it is awfully written for any target audience of any age group.
chop off 40 minutes from the movie and condense the bad story by half and it would have at the least decent

This movie is visually one of the most beautiful movies to come out of America. The vibrant colors reminded me of a Yimou movie on crack.

If you're watching Speed Racer for the plot you've completely missed the boat. SR is a visual film and it is gorgeous.

I'm really excited for The Darkest Hour. I think Hirsch is really talented (especially Into the Wild), but after the one-two lead punch of shit like Speed Racer and Taking Woodstock, I started to lose hope. Glad he took some time off to rejuvenate. It's too bad The Darkest Hour got pushed til December, but him and Thirlby should be good together.

So you never watched any of the cartoons then? Cause they were ripe with convoluted stories. The plot is not why you watch Speed Racer be it live action or animated.

Why do critically hated movies with very low metacritic ratings that seem to have little to offer but a few good visuals always have huge GAF defense forces? First Speed Racer and then Sucker Punch.

There's a defense force for Sucker Punch?

GAF doesn't love Sucker Punch like it does Speed Racer.

Yes.

Not enough have seen it yet. Give it a few years and the praise will be incessant as it is for Speed Racer.
I don't know. I can't stand Zack Snyder and I think in 10 years people will look back at the heights his career reached as a blot on modern Hollywood, but Speed Racer is a genuinely innovative and beautiful film. Not comparable in my eyes.

Digging up this thread again, but just bought the Blu-Ray off ozgameshop.com for $8, with shipping. Time to give my dvd copy to someone deserving.

When I picked up this movie earlier today, I really did not know why. I usually don't buy into GAF hype when it comes to critically panned movies, games or what not. Generally they do get panned for a reason.

(I'm looking at you, Sucker Punch)

However, I guess Speed Racer has been mentioned enough times as some sort of misunderstood, fun movie that it managed to peak my interest (in other threads, never did visit this one before now).

But seeing as I did not enjoy Scott Pilgrim (so sorry) very much, I had low hopes for this film. They seemed similar: Weak, quirky promises that somehow get elevated by great execution when it comes to visual style. This seemed exactly the same, except aimed at a younger generation than me which didn't bode well. Still, I got it cheap and finished it a couple of minutes ago.

And it was also only a couple of minutes into Speed Racer that I was engrossed. It was just such a fun movie. I guess one could say it is also dumb but who cares; it made me feel like I was 13 again. The opening told so much in little time, and the way they shot the ending race (and climax) was just an orgasm in visuals and music. And if you're not moved at the end then you have no fucking heart.

I will watch it again and try to convert other people doing so, but I can see why some doesn't like it since it's not dark, gritty and realistic. But for me it was such a fresh air to see a movie going all out in the visual department. It was basically a cool painting coming to life, again and again. And again. With some great music in the back ground. And even though the characters and plot is, well, weak, it was good enough for what it was.

Thank you GAF for making me see this movie, and I'm so sorry that I did not watch this at the cinema. :(

WB needs to re-release the Blu-ray and this time actually put LOSSLESS FUCKING AUDIO on it. It was ridiculous that they didn't put it on there the first time.

yeah im wondering. i got this on dvd but does it look super amazing on blu ray?
If you watch Speed Racer on a HDTV on DVD, you are doing it way the fuck wrong.

This. Its Hate Force probably has more members than its Defense Force by far. The Hate Force won the war and moved on while the Defense Force is still trying to fight a war it lost long ago.

Don't own a Blu-Ray player, so it's either DVD or nothing.

I'll go with DVD.

Everytime the thread is bumped, I still can't believe the reviews were so bad for this movie. It blows my mind that people overall didn't enjoy this movie the way me and my whole family did.

I blame the colors.

The colours are what make it awesome!

It's the first and only film I've seen at the IMAX and I don't think much could top it in that format.

I'm not a fan of Speed Racer either but it has a lot more going for it than Sucker Punch.

It literally is the cartoon come to life, they didn't sacrifice the tone of it at all. Gotta respect that they were willing to do that regardless of how it would be received.

Yeah... no. Absolutely not happening, for the simple reason that Speed Racer is truly awesome and Sucker Punch is entirely mediocre.

Well that's where you're wrong. It wasn't shot with IMAX film, so you haven't actually seen a film in that format. The Dark Knight remains the only action film with real IMAX sequences, so that would naturally be better than Speed Racer at IMAX.

I am ignoring Transformers 2, as it is not what I'd call a film.

I didn't know GAF has this thread!

I think the only bad thing in the movie was Spritle. Otherwise it's quite awesome. I love how they acknowledge that Speed Racer IS Mach Go Go.

Kinda sad that we won't get another Tatsunoko film - Gatchaman =/

Saw it in theatres, I think I was the only one of the 4 or 5 friends I saw it with who liked it, but ah well.

Edit; fuuuuck. Jumped here from a quote in the other speed racer thread OP, didn't realize it was a whole different thread when I replied. Thanks 4am.
