To OT, I know how you feel. I used to get that shit all the time, but what made it worse is that it was my family that did it. Mostly my cousins and aunts and uncles.
Me and my sisters are "high yellow," so we would always get called out for talking "white" (whatever the f*ck that means...), and acting all prim and proper. I'm like, you mean, acting like a fricking civilized person, and not hootin' and hollerin' like a damn fool?
I've been called all sorts of stuff, even Carlton Banks, but I've turned it all into a joke now. I laugh it off. I don't understand this notion that if you are of a certain race, you have to talk, and act a certain way.
As for us, "being black," is not about talkin' in broken English, listening to hip hop, wearing jeans down to our knees, and raising a ruckus wherever we go. That's a generalization of a lot of the complaints that I see flung our way as a people. Some of them can be accurate, but that's not "Black Culture." Perhaps it's a part of it (the music and the style).
I'm proud to be a young (well, not so young anymore), black male, but I do get frustrated at the behavior of some of my people. The idiots who came into your store were just that, idiots. You should be proud of your accomplishments, and don't let their ignorant attitudes try and diminish them and make you somehow feel "guilty" for setting and achieving your goals.
They weren't angry at you for "acting white." They were pissed because they saw something they'll never be: An educated, respected black male. It intimidates people like them, regardless of sex or race. Some people just hate to see people come up.
Oh, and the photos (like the one above) always crack me the hell up.

The prison system is so fucked, especially in regards to the way white people are treated by the other races, that every white person I've come across that has spent time in prison has come out racist or more racist than when they went in. Whites tend to be the least racially conscious going in, but come out completely tainted by the experience.Amir0x said:

To the OT I can't help but shake my head at this line in your OP "a group of black males came into the store, of course acting ignorant as fuck." So any group of black males is up to no good, are you implying this really? If a group of young white males came in what would you have expected from them? You were already putting out a negative energy when you saw the group so you received negative energy back. Our reality is our own and if you expect the worst of things you receive it simple of that.

In my experience you only get teased when you try to act like you're better than everyone else. I got told I acted white a couple times because I liked computers and read books. It was never too serious though. Sometimes you gotta just learn how to blend in.
The worst thing is when your white friends tell you that you're one the "good blacks," then you gotta get hood on em real quick and let em recognize.

What happened happened. It was unfortunate, but next time try this:
As soon as you see them, don't shake your head or anything indicating how you feel about thugs or what have you. A lot of people including "ghetto heads" notice that kind of body language and whether its intended at them.
Instead, when you see them acknowledge them with perhaps a, "Gentlemen". Proceed to tell them you're there if they need some assistance, e.g. "If there's anything you need help with, just let me know." and then, (and this is important) LET THEM LOOK AROUND. No need to overdo it by trying to relate to them, keep it simple. After all, thugs don't come to stores to make friends or hang out, they just want to shop like the rest of us.
I've seen many a manager/employee(mostly young) mess this up and then make it worse by getting defensive. Real professionals know exactly how to handle a situation like this. If you want to become a better employee/service rep simply put yourself in there shoes, and figure it out.
