You said you're having a lot of performance problems with cutscenes etc... how about actual gameplay? Does the game run smooth when running around the city?
Pretty sure the only way to get the Steam version is through Steam.I don't know if this has been answered but; if I buy the game elsewhere can I plug the CD key into steam, and get it that way?
It's not as smooth as it was in AA, even indoors, but it is more than playable. However, right now, it is hard to even focus on what's happening in a cutscene, as everything is going to hell during it. For a game like this, immersion is a big deal for me; right now, the gameplay segments are broken up by a stuttering mess. I'm not trying to be hyperbolic here, either, as I've been able to put up with poor framerates, bad pop-in and texture loading issues on other titles - these cutscenes are pretty badly broken for me.
So the PC port is no good?
Really? I pretty much experience no stutter outdoors due to loading but do experience the stutters when indoors during hallway transitions. And I have a shitty HDD.It works well enough in DX9 but there is a somewhat bad stutter affecting many people, including me. It's more than playable but trying to fly around outside can be really annoying at times. It seems to be a UE3 problem that happens when a new section is trying to load, or when it's saving, so I guess not much can be fixed in that regard if anything at all.
I think this is the first open world UE3 game I've played so that could be why I haven't run into this stuttering before, I can't think of any other UE3 games I have on PC that have this happening.
Anyone else having issues with the shutter doors not reacting to Batman's remote electrical charge? This is the second time I've experienced the bug, and I can't proceed because of it. I watched a youtube, and the dude did the exact same thing as me and the door opened. I remember Arkham Asylum being quite polished...
Anyways, I'm not sure about this game yet. I don't care for the open world approach. I feel like I spend more time traveling from mission to mission than I actually doing missions, and it's a bit tedious.

For the electrical gun (and this isn't explained in the game at ALL), there is a primary fire AND an alternate fire. One is positive and one is negative, aka one is push and pull.
For example, on my 360 controller, Aiming + Left Trigger is primary fire, and Aiming + Right bumper is alternate fire.
Alternate fire makes the shutter doors go up.![]()
Not to mention the fact that completing side quests end game is a pain in the ass due to rooftops being littered with goons with guns. Seriously, complete sidequest before you get too far into the story or else you'll be frustrated with gun fire every few seconds when traveling.I havent had any shutter issues once I realized how that gun works. They all seem to work for me so far.
Im enjoying the game but I actually think the world should be bigger with better ways to travel across it (batmobile!). Theres a lot of repeating now and, like you said, a good chunk of time is spent going from mission to mission instead of actually doing a mission.

So just finished installing this from GMG and it works fine except there is this yellow glow/line thing at the bottom of the screen. I've googled and there were no results with my problem. Anyone else had it?

I dont have this issue myself but you might want to give what Mr. DingDong says a try.What the fuck is with the Rendering Thread Exceptions crashes?
This may have already been covered but for those experiencing the intermittent rendering error / lack of video memory message it seems this might be a result of the installation of AMD dual threading optimization software regardless of whether you have AMD hardware or not. In any case after scouring the official tech help forums I saw the suggestion to remove said software and following this I've not yet experienced a crash for over an hour so far. A marked improvement over 5-10 minutes. It can be found under remove programs as Dual Core Optimizer, hope it helps.
Edit: Ok, seems this isn't a fix. Just experienced the same error message. I guess I was just lucky for an hour.
It almost sounds like something is messed up in your PC. Can you install Arkham Asylum right now without changing anything and see how it plays? Could be a broken codec, sound driver, etc. See if you can reproduce the results on AA.
I started AA up before I posted here the first time tonight, but after this post, I decided to do so again, but from the beginning (I originally loaded a file at endgame). Performance felt less solid than I remembered it, but still far better than AC. I went into Crysis afterwards, and it felt as smooth as it has ever been, so now I'm wondering if I was just imagining things in AA or something.
I just turned everything to the lowest settings possible in AC, started a game, and sure enough, it didn't help anything. I'm really not sure what's wrong here, but I've now been working to fix it for the last four hours, and I don't feel any closer than I was.
EDIT: I also did as SenorDingDong said and uninstalled the dual threading software. Didn't help.

Just beat it. Very awesome and an improvement over AA. Something that would make the game better is:
1. The game needs a few "BIG" moments that are either in-game or very well made QTEs. A few of the bigger events happened in cutscenes. In a market with games like Uncharted 3 (Batman is better overall) that has some really jaw-dropping moments, a few exclamation points would have really taken Arkham City to the next level. The player never really does anything "mechanically" that is unexpected or surprising.
I disagree completely. I love the fact that the Batman games are actually games and not cinematic showpieces that treat the player like an afterthought.
I don't think it's a problem with the game then, something else is borked. Uninstall your graphics drivers completely and reinstall them. Sometimes if you don't clean them out every once in a while, things can get screwed up. This may or may not help, and I'd need a lot more info/time to fix things. AA and Crysis are running fine, and Arkham City should be too... turning down settings should ALWAYS help.
If you want an easy potential solution, go down to your speaker icon in Windows, right click --> Playback Devices --> Right click your device you use to output sound --> Properties --> Advanced and try setting it to 16-bit, 41 khz sound instead of wherever it's at.
Wait... Nolan North did the Penguin's voice?
Mind blown.
I still think AC is a great game, but I really don't understand why in hell's name it released on PC so damn late! Especially given the ridiculous amount of technical issues!
So the PC port is no good?
2 things:
- How do I disable the button prompts and tipps on screen? I did the "No Hints" in the options and in the combat and gadget menu I think I dissabled tutorial for all attacks. Yet, I still get them the whole time.
- Since I still experience a lot of suttering and <30fps (mostly in the city), I was wondering if someone knows what the best way to get a smooth framerate (>=30fps at all times) is?
i5 2500k @ 3,3GHz
HD5770 @ CCC 11.11b in DX9
4GB RAM
everything maxed (no DX11 and no PhysiX) with 2x MSAA and Vsync enabled.
When I disable Vsync I have a smooth framerate but I get soo much screen tearing. Any other settings that give me performence without tuning done the graphics too much?
Turn on Triple buffering using D3DOverriver for Vsync.
I just tried that but I see now difference (Could be that I did something wrong). I still got a lot of stuttering. My biggest problem, I guess, is that I get 60fps the one second and then 30 (or <30) the next. So I guess instead of having the framerate vary between 30 and 60 (average 46) is there a way to limit the fps to 30? This way it might not be as obvious if the framerate drops a bit under 30?!
Look in the "C:\Users\[username]\Documents\WB Games\Batman Arkham City\BmGame\Config" folder for the bmengine.ini file and open it with Notepad. CTRL+F, search for "smoothframerate", and change those first 3 lines you find to look like this:
bSmoothFrameRate=TRUE
MinSmoothedFrameRate=30
MaxSmoothedFrameRate=30
Save the file.
Right click on it, hit Properties, then tick the box at the bottom that says "Read-only" and that should do it.
