I don't read one piece but I saw this and I was like shiiiiiiiiit what a pimp.
Basically.
Half of the stuff you listed about Eren apply to other generic main characters. Also let's not forget Eren has a bankai/nine tails mode and that he can't die.
And I don't care about Sasha's purpose. She is a fun and entertaining character. That's all what matters
Of which I already admitted to. Lol, did you seriously compare his titan form to Bankai / Nine Tails mode? Eren's titan is literally a pillar to the story. There would be no plot without it, its hardly generic. Bankai / 9Tails / Gear is just a get out of free jail card/powerup in most fights, Eren's titan needs to be used strategically (like plugging up that whole) and is almost impossible to control.
And that's your prerogative, just don't expect me to sit down when you call Eren "generic" when he is much more than that.
Not exactly. Think of the leaders of that template aka Goku & Luffy. Under the surface, they're not really all that naive, and even they got/get their asses whipped, repeatedly.

Wow, what an intro. All the intensity and twists of an end game in the first 5 chapters. THIS is why Watsuki is the man. Doesn't really have much to do with Mary Shelley's Frankenstein outside of the basic concept, but that's okay since that's pretty boring anyway. Fury has the potential to be a crazy awesome battle protag channeling the manliness of the likes of Kenshiro and all the other 80s dudes.

Actually Tsukishima seemed to be dead. If you check out page 18, he knew that Ginjou sent Moe to him so he can have another friend in case Ginjou died. Tsukishima thanked Moe, got another friend and died.
Its his freaking special power up which every shounen hero has. It really isn't anything special about it. Its being used strategically cause he is a scrub but it will be used for every major encounter from now on.
And stop hating on Sasha. She is better than Eren. Stop denying the truth.
Bro, Sasha's had all but three or four panels of 'screentime.' She's a doodle, not a character.

That template is alot more prolific though and even though they aren't irredeemably stupid they do incredibly dumb shit and if they didn't have any beatdowns or troubles the conflicts would get boring.
Lol, we're not actually disagreeing here. I just got caught up in your definition of Naive/Dumbass strong.
As for which gathered set of traits is the prolific of the bunch, idk; There's no actual census, and I've been reading more shounens that involve openly perceptive protagonists lately: Bleach, Gamaran, Shingeki, etc..etc... It's a toss up, imo.

havent read gamaran but in my corner you've also got Fairy Tail, Beelzebub, Kekkaishi (at least for most of it), Blood Lad etc etcwe need a referee, maybe Big One can ask most people for their consensus.
Hahaha! Though, you know, I think you're probably right. Surface naive, initially inoffensive protagonists probably do outnumber openly cunning ones. I got to thinking since that last post, and more like Sket-Dance and Gintama came to mind than not.

Just another "Why me sad?" moment.

It's been slow for a while, but this is the type of chapter that makes me remember why One Piece is pretty much my #1.
I know there's a whole ugly or pretty debate going on regarding Oda's females, though I'll be honest in saying two things:
1. At least Oda has (intentionally) ugly women of importance. (both on the side of good and evil, in fact) Last time I checked a lot of other shonen, I was hard pressed to find any girl (who isn't a kid... then again, even that seems like fanservice territory nowadays..) who's really intentionally average, plain or kinda ugly (if ugly at all) looking.
I mean there's a few characters you could argue for like TenTen from Naruto, but I'm pretty sure her being so plain was never intentional.
In Bleach I'm actually hard pressed to think of any female that's meant to be unattractive at all. There's only one exception and I'm pretty sure it was supposed to be a man. (I call it Frieza syndrome.)
Now one thing I do see in Naruto/Bleach is a huge variation in boob sizes. I'm pretty sure both Naruto and Bleach pretty much have one girl for every single cup size on the chart.
One Piece? Eh... It'd have every step if you can count every time Nami's chest size changed I guess? Otherwise I'd say the chest size kinda switches between big and massive.
Now I want to say this; Eventhough the extremely similar body types in One Piece's past have made a lot of females kinda "generic nami clones" to a large degree, I think ever since Amazon Lily the argument that Oda can't design women that are either absolutely "beautiful" or absolutely "disgusting/ugly" kinda falls flat.
Even within the Fishman island arc itself we've had a pretty good example, really;
Otohime honestly didn't seem like she was designed to be either beautiful or extremely ugly. She definitely wasn't a Nami clone, that's for sure.
This actually brings up a little question for me though, do people judge Oda more harshly on the female design thing because he's made it so incredibly apparent he's capable of switching it up in the past?
Last time I checked series like FT, Bleach or Naruto don't get any flack for almost any female character being attractive.
Maybe I'm missing something of course, but I'm curious about the reasoning behind this.

As far as i am concern, it´s ok to draw ugly characters but honestly i think that Oda´s design for ugly character to be utter shit due to his character design decisions. BTW Oda tend to make ugly character to be very fat most of the time.
I would not call Unohana, Rukia or Jackie beautiful women.

A lot of folks would likely disagree on Rukia, she's well liked despite being the polar physical opposite of someone like Orihime.
Becoming attached to a character in Kyojin? Rookie mistake, you guys should know better.
Jiraishin is good, although a bit too crude for my likings. But it's made by Tsutomu Takahashi, so reading it is a must.

Lots of info about the story of Edgar and Marybell (which is sad), which makes me sadder about poor Marybell in volume 1.
Only 1 volume left, wonder what will be in it.

Could be since it seemed more like a style change (a lot of females that looked alright before, looks really good now)
1) Naruto didn't actually know shit about the fox save the usual stuff he heard.
2) Because the fox has been defensive and remains so even now?
There was a point were the fox claimed that Dark Naruto was the true version of Naruto and asked what happened to him. Plus he looked pretty bummed out when he was sealed in that Senjuu chakra cage the last time.
Because the fox went from trying to overtake and break free from Naruto to wanting nakama now?
It's not so much surprise, but the whole facepalming at someone whose supposed to be filled with nothing but hate falling for talk no jutsu (a good test run for Sasuke, oh god!!), not that that's supposed to be a surprising thing at this point.

New characters design are really brilliant, a bit surprised by Big Mama being cruel! I expected her to have a carefree character, like that guy from long-legged tribe!
Luffy's reactions are bringing back memories.
Also, the color art was amazing, really liked their animal counterparts.

In the arc? Maybe for some type of plot development or something, but I dont think it was better than the chapter when the strawhats defeated all those foes in the plaza in all those page spreads, that was the best chapter since the time skip.
What do you mean? There was some sort of alliance formed off panel between the two which saved Tsuna from Colonellos attack.
This whole fox nakama thing really is weird. It just seems weird that now the fox gives a damn about being buddies with Naruto

Hmm, it's a character development thing perhaps. I say maybe because now he gives a damn. Before he wanted to just rampage & lash out at the world that made him what he is. Then Madara & the whole you're just my weapon & nothing more. The nine tails(kurama) was taken aback once Naruto was serious with his intentions of befriending. He's being offered something he never had before. I just hope the writing doesn't blow.

Luffy has static with an emperor now huh? Good he's making his marks on the new world. A fitting end to the arc.

...The guy dies off screen...this further showcases the insignificance of that character and the arc overall. Ichi got his powers and bad guy got beaten with ease...meh. Well let's see what happens.

Well he's filled with something, because everytime he went into 4tails+, he'd rage at everything.

I'm such an MMY fan. I'm just going to list the issues first. The adolescent romance between Maou/Hero is sweet yet still draining. With such an adult/advanced theme things should lean away from the naivety. Also, in such a big world it is a bit difficult to believe that so many key plot characters are meeting up so easily/frequently.
That's like it... Good stuff is everywhere. That salt bridge was good shit along with an actually powerful war speech. The pages just eavesdropping on the villagers and soldiers were fantastic. They were only written to give you insight into the settings/people surrounding the main events. So well done. I'm also now accustomed to the territories, products, terminology, etc... so I am now able to appreciate the writing more.
And the art still continues to impress. Below is just a minute panel in a two page spread. This little panel which means basically nothing has better art then most manga out there. I wish some backgrounds were more detailed but that is a minor complaint.
I can't think of many manga I am currently enjoying more.

I'm mostly talking about attractive though.
Characters like Rukia still pander to a certain fetish crowd to a certain degree.
Someone like Unohana (or Momo) is about as "average" as it gets in Bleach, and giving them a sexy outfit and a more "hip" haircut would probably fix that, they're really not "unattractive".
I guess for Bleach the only character that sort of counts might be Jackie, but I still think that, were she a person in the normal world she'd definitely be attractive. The only reason she stands out is because she has an actual nose, which is a no-no for females in anime.
