PlayStation Vita Japanese Launch Thread. "APOCALYPTIC!" says concerned Nuclear Muffin

Why is that bad though? Sony make money from software royalties, it shouldn't matter which platform those royalties are coming from. If the difference is selling a million units, that's like thirty million dollars Sony are discarding, for no clear reason I can think of.

How much do you think Sony makes on a PSP vs. selling a PSP game? That's their logic. They would rather sell PSPs.

Does this dead shit ever stop, or do we have to wade through it to get to actual impressions/feedback (good and bad)?
Comes and goes. Last year it was the 3DS, this year it's the Vita, and next year it will be WiiU.

That's they cyclical nature of Fanboy wars on the Internet.

I've been reading it since Bulma guy started his schtick in every Vita thread.
But this time it's for realsies!

On the plus side - two days ago, I saw a middle-aged man playing Shinobido 2 on his Vita on the Shinjuku station. There's still hope!

The PSV? How much do I think Sony make on the average user's PSV software purchases versus the device itself? I think they make nothing on the hardware, a little on the peripherals, and about five dollars a unit on third party games, considerably more when sold through PSN. Making game sales orders of magnitude more important.

Can someone re/confirm if the wifi only model can not be tethered to your phone's 3G internet.

I read an article saying this was addressed in a FAQ, but I'm desperately hoping that it somehow can be done because Canada won't get the 3G model at launch.

If your phone support some kind of mobile hotspot function than your set

Same happens with Mario and Mario Kart, for sure. Oh, wait!

They didn't have proper graphics, controls or multiplayer. Things that can be fixed only in Vita, right now.

Well, except that the MK franchise is largely aimed at a completely different demographic that has historically been vastly more receptive to handheld gaming, and its appeal isn't built primarily on online multiplayer, which has significant physical limitations that come into play on a handheld. But hey, we'll see when CoD Vita ships and the NPD numbers roll in.

That's (partly)true for competitive skill-based multiplayer games(which granted, COD is the posterchild of), but not at all for others.

Does anyone knows of a good video converter to convert videos into the PS Vita?

I use FormatFactory to convert avi to mp4 for my iPhone. It's very simple and it has a lot of preset configurations for different devices (and you can easily create another specific for vita native resolution). Also, very important, manage list and folder selection or multiple selection.

That makes no sense. Mobile WiFi hotspot of a phone should work, since it's WiFi. Unless you meant tethered by a cord...

Can someone point me to a good Vita channel on YouTube?

Right - so if you could get Uncharted psv on PSV -and- PS3, then the choice for X million already installed Uncharted fans is :

1) play this game on a machine i own for the cost of the game itself
or
2) play this game on a machine i have to spend a significant amount to get, and then buy the game.

I -personally- would love to see dual format games because that's the sort of experience i want, but it strikes me as a bad move for birthing a new platform.

Just playing uncharted, and I noticed that nate has a weird halo around him. Is this an AA artifact, or motion blur?

a weird halo?

it's because Vita -games- are already dead as well

Of course tethering works - the vita just sees a WiFi hotspot. I've used it a few times with my android phone to get over the 20MB 3G download limit (I don't have access to normal WiFi at my wifes parents house)

Man, that's pretty sad sales on the Vita in JP.

I hope Sony and 3rd Party keeps launching games on Vita even after that launch bomb.

Will give it a try! Thanks for the recommendation!

Has anyone tried talking to Sony about the OLED black stains problem? Mine has them as well. I think it's a very widespread problem. Maybe even affecting every PSVita.

Has anyone that has got a vita NOT got the problem? To test all you have to do is display a nearly completely black screen (easiest way to do this is to take a photo in a room with not light) and view the screen in a dark room.

ps. has anyone found a way of watching youtube videos on the vita?

people stated they have them some pages back.

Does uncharted Golden Abyss loading screens count? It's black except for the spinning golden amulet at bottom right of the screen. The blacks look really good.

I think the Vita will be fine, but I agree COD probably won't be the savior or the system-seller that people claim it will - not on the scale people are grandly predicting, anyway. The same was said of GTA on PSP, and while Liberty/Vice stories definitely shifted machines they didn't have the same effect those games had on the big screen. Neither will COD.

Low sales numbers in Japan = higher chances of American / European launch units being part of the first batch, more likely to have defects...

Me no likey. Me hope my 'logic' above is incorrect, but still, me concerned. Oh, and me need to go back to using 'I' and 'I'm'.

no issues here.
none with wifes either.

Mmm.. strange. How long have you been playing on your Vita? I might shoot an email to Sony to ask about the issue. It's kinda annoying once you see it once...

I think it should show up. It shows up definitely on the screen that says "Sony computer entertainment presents". Go into a near pitch black room and look at the screen during it.

No idea but it looks like it is only updating the tiles around Drake so maybe some funky bandwidth saving feature? In U3 Drake was also rendered with a Halo around him but that was caused by screen space ambient occlusion.

The entire top half of my screen is covered with the blotchiness. Very noticeable during Uncharted GA's loading screen and it bugs the hell out of me. This is like the Vita's version of the PSP's dead pixels problem. Luck of the draw. <sigh>

per day : about 2-3 hours during day, 3 hours or so at night i guess?

but yeah, a good amount of time so far.

That's not how things work. Sony didn't just import a bunch of unsold PSPs from the EU and US when PSP was facing supply shortages in 2010/2011.

Silly question but what's the room temperature in your area? I really do not see this problem.

The units are produced specifically for each region. There is no chance you will be getting a unit that was originally part of the launch batch.

Can PS3 players chat with Vita peeps? Also if im on my PS3 can i see what games ppl are playing on their Vita?

Text chat works like standard messaging and it'll display a footer about the originating system if the recipient is on a different one. But as of now PS3 people can't see Vita trophies nor can they see you if you were to log on to the PSN from the Vita. You can still add them as friends though.

My room temperature is around 20 degrees C. I read somewhere that UV lighting can damage OLED displays within seconds if the displays don't have proper filtering on them. This can lead to black/grey blotches. It would be very strange that Sony didn't put a UV filter on the screen, but there is a chance that the filter may be improperly placed...

To Saint Ajola and jkh13. That's very strange. Well my temps here are either 22 degrees (aircon) or 25-30 degrees C, I dont see the issue but I have a screen protector appiled, not sure whether this would help?

Are you experiencing this? http://jin115.com/archives/51833906.html I can't read Japanese but this was the closest thing I could find.

Mine isn't as bad as that one, but yes. Mine is more similar to the second one on that page.

I have it - I don't really notice it, unless I look for it. It's only noticeable on a pure black background for me.

My Zune HD - also an OLED screen - has the same issue...

I read this on a different forum:

"Blotchy OLED lighting around the screen in a pitch black room is normal. It has something to do with the way the screen is driven. Although pixels are not intentionally illuminated, the screen driver constantly sweeps the panel, ready to turn on pixels when the device is on. Some of this energized activity leaks into the pixels and lights them."

Apparently it is a hardware limitation with all OLED devices due to the lack of a backlight when the screen is displaying black.

Ah; excellent!

BTW, anyone have used Hori screen protectors? Looking at Play-Asia I see these two, and I'm wondering what the difference is:

http://www.play-asia.com/Repair_Filter_for_PlayStation_Vita/paOS-13-71-1at-49-en-70-4h5x.html

http://www.play-asia.com/Pitahari_F..._Gloss_type/paOS-13-71-1at-49-en-70-4h5u.html

1st is Matte, 2nd is glossy.
