Gamer Girls Taking A Stand in thought provoking youtube video

Sigh. Who cares? I don't mean to go on a rant, but seriously, anything that provokes your own bias before games deserves to be taunted.

You don't GO INTO a GAME being a female, you go into a game to play the damn game. If you don't like that, then play something else for christ sakes. Better yet just go back to the Kitchen. And I'm a girl. >.<

This is one issue where I really don't know how to feel. Yes, some video game communities can be sexist boys' clubs at times, but this video seems like a cringeworthy way of preaching to the choir, and will only provoke more negative responses those who are already entrenched in the "LOLOLOL GIRLZ" camp. Surely there's a better way to communicate this message?

Most of the girls I know that play games don't want constant attention over it, I've seriously never had any problem playing with them on XBL or PSN with voice chat in open matches.

Seriously.

Most of these gamers go into the game exactly as you said, and come out harassed to the point where gaming as a hobby is not worth it.

Your opinion is that of someone who never has to worry about this as a problem, which is confusing since you say you are a girl.

1) I'm not as attracted to Link or Megaman as I thought I was

2) the one who was hr 2 pwn was also here for me 2 rub one out, whatever she says, don't ban me, that's just like... my opinion man...

3) they'd all probably kick my ass at every game ever

nice video tbh. Cheesy but the sentiment is kinda right on.

All you need to know really, about why I have a problem with a lot of so called "gamer girls". She's the one who put "sexy" in her name, not me.

The video has massive dislikes, too.

GURL gamers wanting to be gamer girls.

I'm a girl gamer. I find this video retarded. If I showed it to the other girls I play games with they would also find it retarded. I used to go to lan parties with a group of girls I met online and none of them were like the uppity chicks in this video.

It depends a lot on the game you're playing. Certain games seem to attract douchebag communities (CoD, Halo). Most of the games I played when I was heavy into online gaming had awesome communities who treated my friends and I awesomely. You could go pubbing at any given time with little to no bullshit even with voice enabled. I got more shit for sounding young then I did for being a girl.

Show up to play the game and not get attention and people will treat you pretty okay. One person in ten might be a douche but he'd find a way to exhibit douche tendencies some other way if you weren't there.

You could argue the same applies to males who put macho terms in their usernames. It's playing to typical gender stereotypes.

Still doesnt mean they should have to put up with shittalk online that is aimed at them because of their name.

"Judge me on my ability to pwn noobs."

Ugh.

They have a point, and they're certainly entitled to play online games free of assholes, taunting, and harassment, but don't go around saying stuff like "pwning noobs." That's all I ask.

This thread is already starting its inevitable turn into the standard GAF/gamer sexist, chauvinistic he-man woman-hater theme that these types of threads usually take.

Bailing.

I was 15 once, and used such terminology. Eventually, I stopped being 15 and wanted to hit myself in the head with a brick for having every used "pwn" without a hint of irony.

Do you see anything feminine in the way I type or in my avatar or my name? The types that DOES this are the ones that are obnoxious about this problem because they're obvious and obviously wanted the attention.

someone should do a parody video where they're like JUDGE ME ON MY TITS. And stage a WoW conversation that ends with a visit to hotornot.com or ratemyrack. So I can believe that's the world I live in. Throw me in there with my horrendous moobs as an easter egg... for balance and poignant sadness.

So because a girl is proud to be a girl and a gamer she should automatically be harassed?

No no no NO NO I have to go with my first instinct on this thread and bail.

It's a start. Every time, EVERY TIME I've decided to give random online players a chance to change my mind about them, and a girl enters the room, there is a unanimous decent into assholery. It's ridiculously pathetic and embarrassing. I can't blame them for saying something, regardless of how preachy/corny it may look to us. Doing nothing for this long and putting up with that stuff has to be frustrating.

Nah, that blonde with the messed up hair looks like that Minecraft chick.

I don't believe them.

And for some reason I don't buy Raychul as a gamer chick either.

Phonies like those "Gamer chicks" or whatever that clan was called who say they're "competitive" in tournaments.

You can be as transparent as you want in text but as soon as you pick up a mic someone will notice. You don't have to be overtly female. Neither should being overtly female open you up for discrimination.

edit: unfortunately the chances of meeting someone willing to act asshole-ish online are astronomically high compared to in person, so it's something that's not likely to stop happening so long as those people feel safe behind the anonymity of the internet.

people here are mostly cool... seriously, I have faith good posts will win out. Mine on the other hand are the product of drunkness and will fail... but that's for the best.

Women are not getting harassed and insulted because they are women. they are getting harassed and insulted because too many people aren't really nice people in general and too many enjoy being a dick online.

Women aren't being singled out. Men get harassed and insulted all the time and lets not even get into all the racism.

I think you're missing the point. This isn't about hating women, it's about actual equality. Men trash talk with men. Men trash talk with women. Women can trash talk with women too. Nobody needs to be asking for special treatment. Play the game to play the game, and if someone is bothering you, mute them or play with someone else. I am male, yet I have encountered plenty of assholes. They're trying to make a case for gender that's not truly about gender.

I'm all for the cause of women feeling truly comfortable in any environment relating to video games. This video came off sort of hokey though.

I agree that there are lots of assholes online. But I do think that there is a very specific misogyny problem that's larger then the shit "the guys" give each other. And yes, it often is actual misogynistic behavior, not just sexist.

I'd just like to throw my anecdotal evidence in here...

I never play FPS games online, but I played WoW for two years straight a while back and I met a lot of girls and as far as I can remember they were never treated any differently than anyone else (except maybe some were treated better than normal). I also played a female avatar. Outside of my guildmates people didn`t really know I was a guy. I was never treated unfairly.
so... yeah, idk. I've only ever heard of this kind of treatment of women

if it helps these women at all, the harassment isn't exclusive to them. Playing online with strangers kinda always sucks

No, YOU'RE missing the point. Men trash talk other men in regards to the game; the shit talking is always because of something that happens in game.

As soon as a girl talks on XBL, it is almost certain that sexist and frankly horrific language will be used simply because she is there, and she is a she. Not so for men.

While it's true guys get harassed online as well, I don't think some of you realize just how bad it gets for some women. And that's a shame and it shouldn't continue.

Like I said I have no problem with their message, it's just their delivery seemed just a tad agitating. Or maybe preachy is a more apt word for it.

I'm pretty sure I'm reminded daily how many people have had sex with my mom and how much of a faggot I am regardless of how well/shitty I play.

just play the damn game!

.

You guys can't change the world view or drone it on, you CAN change a few things on your own though. Yes, even if it meant avoiding online games altogether or play with friends or just play different games because OBVIOUSLY...

I didn't know that there was anything other than horrific language on XBL
