I heard they used solid gold composited ontop of the girl in order to animate the hair.

Lastly, before I go to sleep, you'd have a hard time animating something like this in flash with vectors and tweening, unless you want to rig up a skeleton and some basic collision.

lips moving in 2 frames could be done better with flash ;)
hell the hair is the only thing moving

if you had a big movie budget for this you would have something pretty amazing

The hair is what I'm talking about really, because you know, it's the focus of that shot. It's one of the things Flash really has a hard time doing.

once again that depends on whos behind it
you dont see fancy hair animation in most anime, and when you do its limited to maybe a 2 second long shot.

Well yes, it's not something you can keep up for a long time without inflating your budget.

But my point is I don't even know how it would be possible in a Flash environment.

I've heard of the rigging tools in Flash CS5 but that wouldn't be enough to animate the hair, and it would still look stilted like most motion tweened stuff does.

Granted I never touched the rigging tools in Flash 5, so maybe it's easier now to animate something like hair.

you can mix various animation styles, not unlike samurai jack
im just saying they all have very unique styles and functions, and you probably dont even notice when they are blended (apart from the occasional bad cg cars in anime)

also even movies like sword of the stranger had static hair for the majority

I am not talking about what's practical or feasible. I'm talking about what's POSSIBLE.

And yes, it is perfectly fine to blend cel with tween, but that just means there's something cel can do that tween can't.

That's all I'm saying.

Cel, ignoring all other factors, is more powerful than tween.

Ben-to 01: those were honestly the most derivative first twenty minutes of animu I've watched since Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko. Then the last two minutes happened.

Holy fuck.

Slam Dunk 72: so far it's a retread of the previous Ryonan game. Eh.

Where were you when everybody was talking about it lol.

Fate/Zero 11 Uncut

Holy shit is this a nice cut, I can't believe how much was removed. But now it feels like they have lines lifted straight from the Drama, this is awesome.

you know they actually got madhouse to do a 2d OVA for their series to suit the darker tone
if you dont understand the practical use for various animation styles then theres no point discussing it, and its better suited in a different thread

thats just people sucking at animation
you could compare it to the excess use of still shots and side scrolling backgrounds in anime
theyre completely different styles with different benefits
Tweening is deliberately used to not animate things though. It's like, the definition of sucking at animation (or being lazy/poor).

I used to work in Flash a lot and tweening was just a crutch for finish projects quickly with as little work as possible.

thats kind of my point.

Basically Halys assertion that the world would be better without computer assisted animation would mean the non existence of not only the funniest shows out there, but the great fan animations like metal gear awesome

Sket Dance 39

I didn't really think much of this chapter originally, but I have to say, in animated form it's an absolute riot. Good episode. Amusing omakes as well. Show is also still one of my favorite soundtracks of the year.

Next week is another one of the good chapters, and seeing it show up means we (hopefully) might be closer to the next big story arc already...

Started watching Sailor Moon, it's fun. In fact, I've watched 7 episodes in the span of a day which I don't usually manage.

There's no real point in talking about each episode individually as they've all played out in the largely the same way where Glemy Toto from Gundam ZZ has taken a break from being a space pedo and decided to become some underling for a race of subterranean monster aliens. His role is to extract energy from humans by exploiting their weaknesses, like their desire to be thin or be famous or for cute things while occasionally flipping the viewer off. So it's up to Usagi (Sailor Moon) to put a stop to it by defeating the monster of the week, who disguise themselves as attractive older women, in the name of love and justice.

A large part of the enjoyment for me so far is the parts where Usagi, whose super power is that her crying is so irritating it repels evil, goes about her normal life. It's funny and rather charming. The actual magical girl parts have mostly been average, playing out mostly the same (so far) where Usagi will run away, cry, probably get saved by Tuxedo Mask and eventually throw her tiara frisbee of death at the monster. Except for one episode which involved her making a speaker do some sort of hadoken.

Anyway, I'm not very far in so the action being lacking doesn't really detract from it, I imagine it'll get better as Usagi gets used to being a, uh, Sailor Soldier? and more Sailors join the team.

You know, even though I loved Honey and Clover I never really explored Nodame. Does that make me a bad person?

Best thing Abbot Nodame, is that when you're done with the anime, you can watch the awesome live action series (no sarcasm, the live action is legitimately good, and I'd say even edges out the anime).

Got up to date with Phi Brain. Hrmmm...I kinda like the idea and I keep watching it, yet is seems really odd since you really don't get to see much of the actual puzzles. He just goes "It's Puzzle Time!" and solves stuff.

I do like the mix of huge labyrinths, but I do like how the anime attempts to throw in some smaller puzzles with some solutions. I will miss phi brain after this season.

Eureka Seven 18 - 47

I find it depressing that I'm happy the mecha isn't cg.

Eureka Seven - 48

Ugh... the power of love,.. must... push... through...

Agreed.

The performances are really spectacular.

Watch it Jex, and give us episode by episode impressions!

Are we allowed to post spoilers from manga here (with tags)? Because curiosity got the better of me and I ended up reading what happens in the romance aspect of Chihayafuru up to the latest volume available in japan.

No, we went through this with Usagi Drop, Manga spoilers go in manga thread by virtue of we don't know how much of the manga the anime will adapt.

Eureka Seven - 49

This has got a shounen style romance ending all over it. ¬_¬

People shitting on Flash as an animation tool obviously haven't seen Wakfu: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Zuh0Xaw9xA

Ankama had a few advisors from Madhouse, but the show is all vector. Great show by the way. Really good fun.

So I decided to watch an episode since I was pretty impressed with the video you linked to. While I remain impressed with what they do using flash (Very impressed), it still does not look as good or fluid as traditional 2d animation techniques. This is based off of an episode not on the OP for the show, which looks crazy good in comparison.

Also, interestingly enough, they had Yuasa help out with character design in a flash-less OVA(Or something) that they did for the show.

I assume you started with the first episode? It started good, but the team got much better over time. There's some really amazing stuff that rivals the opening, especially in the second season. And I don't think Ankama had a huge budget either.

Do you think others take a glance at animeGAF and flee in absolute terror?
I know I certainly would!

Is Metropolis worth my time? Heard very mixed reviews from friends.
For me it's probably the most formative film I've ever seen, from the formal elements to the narrative elements. Hell, even the music is absolutely fantastic, some of the best original New Orleans style jazz I've heard outside of New Orleans. It's sort of rushed, but for the overall it's a phenomenal film as far as I'm concerned, and absolutely beautiful to behold. Watch it.

It was a mid-season 1 episode, I will look into season 2. I did see a clip of some sort of ball-game that looked impressive as well.

All of you suck.

Also, my problem with obsessing animation is that when it comes to my entertainment I'm not really concerned about the process, I'm concerned about how all the pieces fit together. Great animation or great dialogue isn't really memorable per se, great moments are memorable by association to a collection of parts that compose an excellent scene.

But what about K-On?

Every season I look over the list and I see only crap.

Then again, every season I discover that there was something really good 6 months-2 years ago, and I think "how the hell did I miss that when it was new?" :P

Probably because it looked like crap.
Flash is not an inherently bad thing, it just so happens to be used to produce lots of things with some less than desirable aesthetics.
So it's the Unreal Engine of 2D?
